Zoom face

I really ought to be on top of this by now, I’ve only spent the last 9 months on Zoom, but increasingly I’m conscious about my face. I use Zoom through a laptop, if i don’t wear makeup i look red and blotchy (think Santa rosy cheeks), if I wear makeup despite foundation and bronzer, I look washed out, like I’ve got a white stage paint on. It might be the make up, it might be the lighting. I often turn in the light in my office out as that’s not good, but then the lighting and glare from the laptop washes me out.

I’m speaking at some online conferences soon so it would be good to get this sorted if anyone has tips

Thanks

Another discovery this week was the difference a really good webcam makes. So that I could do a big presentation I borrowed DHs webcam for full 4k and he took ds's. There was wailing from DHs office when he proclaimed he looked like he had the plague (it was very unflattering), but I looked better than in person

I'm sending my ringlight back. I have a desk lamp with a lovely soft lighbulb in it. It does the same job as a ringlight if I shine it directly into my face from behind my laptop. Also it doesn't make big circle reflections in my glasses. I looked like a weird alien owl 😆

weird alien owl 😆

Christ this is a minefield innit.

One option is to ‘hide self view’. You wouldn’t sit in an IRL meeting holding a mirror. I think it is making us all understandably obsessed

TableNiner · 02/02/2021 22:31

But I appreciate if you are presenting you want to look on point

PrincessOfAllOurTarts · 02/02/2021 22:47

Today’s group is mostly child abuse survivors. The one on Sunday will be cult survivors. Monday’s is survivors of sexual abuse.

Someone who was sexually abused as a child in a religious cult, who has just moved into a shelter suddenly in the middle of a pandemic, because their violent and abusive ex-partner has convinced other family members to let them back in the house to live.
Should you be posting other people's highly sensitive and identifying information on MN? Surely not.

But then you don't catch yourself if you look totally bored or something. I'd be scared of thinking I'd hidden my camera if I'd done that.

Tinted sunscreen - Heliocare
Concealers - L'Oréal
Lip : cheek tint - glossier
Slick of brow gel - glossier
Slick of mascara - glossier

Glossier is the one stop healthy looking face solution for me pretty much 😂😂😂 the ultimate no makeup makeup

In a longer term approach I'd assess your skincare to understand why you are so red and blotchy . Avene have some nice products as to LRO toleriane range that could help .

Also check if you have any rosacea symptoms ?

My £10 ring light from Home Bargains was such a good buy. Celestial glow that eliminates any shadows from my face.

DonLewis · 03/02/2021 15:19

Huge fan of hide self view.

Melange99 · 03/02/2021 15:54

Can you hide self view on Teams too?

CheckerBear · 03/02/2021 16:47

Well, if your own face traumatises you to the point of PTSD, I think you’ve got bigger issues than a zoom filter, ring light or new lippie can fix.

Exorcism maybe?

So so you also curdle milk? Scare small children? Cause livestock to spontaneously abort when you’re in the vicinity.

If none of the above, skip the exorcism and head straight for a personality transplant.

You might want to look into compassion implants whilst you’re at it.

You on the right thread @CheckerBear ?!!

How often are you on Teams Checker? It's not like glancing in the mirror for a few minutes.

I watched a video yesterday that said that any lamp behind your computer would be fine, no need for a special ring light. I don't have a spare lamp either, but I'd be able to buy that in a shop whereas I'd have to order a ring lamp online.

MoltonSilver · 04/02/2021 12:23

The Hot and Flashy blog has a you tube video with some good suggestions for Zoom calls.

Extrapepperoni · 04/02/2021 12:56

@Cecily42 you made me lol.

Melange99 · 04/02/2021 13:07

I have bought a clip on video conferencing light for my laptop. It arrived today, and it makes such a difference. I look human at last.
