Zoom face

DIKateFleming · 27/01/2021 14:43

I really ought to be on top of this by now, I’ve only spent the last 9 months on Zoom, but increasingly I’m conscious about my face. I use Zoom through a laptop, if i don’t wear makeup i look red and blotchy (think Santa rosy cheeks), if I wear makeup despite foundation and bronzer, I look washed out, like I’ve got a white stage paint on. It might be the make up, it might be the lighting. I often turn in the light in my office out as that’s not good, but then the lighting and glare from the laptop washes me out.

I’m speaking at some online conferences soon so it would be good to get this sorted if anyone has tips

Thanks

@XazieRose
Please stop being so bloody woke.
Please learn to understand the context in which any random term is being used.
There are enough things to suck the joy out of daily life, we really do not need people nit-picking at every blasted utterance on MN.

I neeeeeed a filter for teams!

Or a facelift.

Laiste · 28/01/2021 20:52

ShandlersWig Please don't trivialise facelifts.

Wink
DIKateFleming · 28/01/2021 20:54

Had the filter turned up to the max today, I look nicely soft focus, like an 80s wedding photo, so that can stay. Definitely did a good job on the bags

Did first conference today, obviously that was on an entirely different platform with no filter 🙄
@XazieRose, oh don’t be so precious. Are you doing your morning round policing threads on Mumsnet for inappropriate expressions?
I'm with you. I totally get the not mocking serious conditions but this wasn't done with any ill intent. Some people seem to think they will score points if they tell off anyone who makes a light-hearted comment on serious stuff. Should we get told off when we jokingly put on a foreign accent? Or when we dress up as a Frenchman with a baguette and a string of garlic around our neck at Halloween?

LooseMooseHoose · 28/01/2021 23:03

Is your foundation or any spf moisturiser on your face giving you flash back? I find just using a translucent powder to slightly even and mattify the skin and then bronzer etc makes me look much healthier on video than if I also use foundation. Your skin doesn't need to be flawless because of the blur feature!

rainydogday · 28/01/2021 23:51

Oh god I look like I have growing jowls by the day! Does Microsoft teams do a filter? Think it's the massive headphones that squash my face together that force my giant jowls down my face BlushGrin

Hazelnutlatteplease · 29/01/2021 11:03

Can I say a massive thank you for this thread. DD(15) has had to log in for a video school tutorial today. We stacked up some games and moved a light and it's made a big difference to her confidence!! She has actually kept the camera on!!

MoriaRoseForever · 29/01/2021 11:39

@Murinae

The zoom filter is the up arrow by stop video, then video settings, then touch up my appearance and move the dot on the the scale to the right.
I don't seem to have that on mine. I click video settings but no touch up appearance .

Argh that didn't come out right. Anyway it's on your second photo try turning it (touch up my appearance) to on.
ihatethecold · 29/01/2021 19:09

When I was zoom today on my laptop I couldn’t see any way to use a filter.

ThePricklySheep · 29/01/2021 19:18

I’m not the one who can’t do it, Murinae I’m showing MoriaRoseForever Smile

Gwenhwyfar · 29/01/2021 20:13

I look really pale on Zoom. Anything I can do for that apart from plaster myself in yellow makeup and fake tan?

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 29/01/2021 20:35

I have to use Microsoft Teams which is worse because there doesn't seem to be a filter option. I never had jowls before - I'm only in my thirties but apparently when I look down at my laptop I have about 3 chins!

Anyway, after a few bad call where I was so distracted by how awful I looked, I check out a few tips online - here is a link to some good ideas from a youtube blogger who has to post videos all the time:

I also bought this portable ring light -

glamdoll.ie/collections/accessories/products/selfie-ring-light

I'm sure you can find similar on amazon. Ring lights are brilliant because they make sure there are no shadows on your face and you just look more awake, but I couldn't justify buying a proper big expensive one.
This one I can attach it to my laptop and there are a few different light settings, so warm and cooler light.

Melange99 · 29/01/2021 21:00

Teams needs to catch up on the filter. I never thought I was that unattractive until I had to use Teams!

Makes your neck look dreadful, I keep the camera off most of the time thank goodness

CMOTDibbler · 31/01/2021 15:02

A ring light makes all the difference, you also need to have your webcam at a height so that you are looking up ever so slightly into it (not too much though). A little bit of contouring really helps, and I put a bit of yellow powder on the end of my nose. If you look at yourself on video in the Zoom settings you can mess around with seeing what works for you - lipstick that is great in real life doesn't always work on camera

A bright scarf helps for me as well, and covers up that I'm wearing a hoodie.
Tomorrow I have to present a Zoom which will be recorded and published, so haunting me forever and I'll do a full face of proper makeup but normally its a layer of Rosalique (so I don't look like I'm sunburnt, eyeshadow as liner, mascara, a swipe of contour stick to give me cheekbones, and coloured lip balm

Orcadianrythyms · 31/01/2021 15:12

I'm amazed people saving the world from PTSD have time to read Style and Beauty Wink You sound ridiculous and minimise the issue more than a simple comment on a beauty chat.

Back on track, the ring light is a game changer. Get one that has the three types of light and more blush than normal but not too Punch and Judy.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 31/01/2021 15:54

I've just ordered myself a ring light - was on a WhattsApp chat this morning looking every one of my very nearly 57 years! That's fine - they are very good friends -but my working day is spent on Google classroom. Don't want to frighten the children too much!

My lockdown mission is to be kind to myself so yesterday I stopped the carbs again, today this... By next Sunday when I actually turn 57 I'll be a different woman!

LakeGeneva · 02/02/2021 19:13

Thank god for this thread, am going to buy a ring light now. Was utterly traumatised - yes genuinely, like if I'd been in a cult and then saved by an angry mumsnetter - earlier today by a colleague who fucked up sharing a document and somehow enlarged the window she was looking at me on so that all I could see was a massive Godzilla sized version of my face, all imperfections, craters and faultlines present, across each of my own three fucking screens. It was like a horror film.
