Tiffany Necklace

So, I posted last week asking for recommendations for silver jewellery. Loads of lovely suggestions, thank you.
DD is going to be 16 and really wanted a Return to Tiffany pendant necklace. It was way out of our price range.
We've had a good think and decided just to go for it.
My question is... you buy the pendant separately to the chain. Would it be awful ( and cheap) to just buy charm and get ready chain from somewhere cheaper?. £65 for a plain silver chain ( and a very fine, delicate one at that) seems eye watering!.
I'd use the extra money that I'd saved to upgrade to the bigger charm.
Any advice or experience please?.

I bought a new sterling silver chain as felt the Tiffany one was very delicate.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/01/2021 18:30

Thanks @LolaAnn12. Did you buy the Tiffany one to begin with then?. Where did you get your chain from if you don't mind me asking?

I got it as a gift but I felt the chain would break easily so I bought a sterling silver one from eBay and it's been fine, wear it all the time and have had no issues. Think it was around £10.00.

Brill. Thank you.

Tiffany silver chains do have a Tiffany stamp on them but no reason why you couldn't buy another as long as you don't fib about it - as the stamp thing gives the game away?

SomewhatBored · 12/01/2021 19:33

Just a thought - you could get a white gold chain for that sort of price from a high street jeweller, and that would have the benefit of not tarnishing.

ChelseaCat · 12/01/2021 19:35

I wouldn’t get white gold to be worn with silver as the rhodium plating will wear and it will gradually look more yellow, particularly as it will be alongside a silver charm.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/01/2021 19:37

Thank you. She'd rather have the bigger pendant than the 'real' chain. I wondered about white gold but thought the colours might not quite match?.

I can highly recommend the Pandora snake chain, they are fabulous quality, I have a clogau pendant on one and the difference to the very thin one that came with it is astonishing. However dearer than the Tiffany one at £115. Could grandparents perhaps buy her the chain?

Imtoooldforallthis · 12/01/2021 19:43

Oh and the clasp sits at the back, not the front as shown on the photos.

SomewhatBored · 12/01/2021 19:45

In my experience a fine white gold chain looks good with a silver pendant - any colour difference is not noticeable, and it keeps its sparkle better. I haven't had the issue the pp has with white gold turning yellow. All mine is 9ct though, rather than purer (softer) gold.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/01/2021 19:46

The Pandora one is way out of our price range. No GPS in a position to buy it either.
She'd be more than happy with an unbranded one, just seems silly to spend that amount of money on such a fine chain . Having an unbranded one means she's going to have the bigger pendant so that'll make her happy too.

Thats more my price range imtoooldforallthis ! I wonder if the pendant will fit over the clasp though?!. Thank you.

I have a Tiffany chain, had it for 10 years and I actually do think it was worth the money. It's the only chain I have that doesn't constantly get stuck in my hair. It's much stronger than it looks too.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/01/2021 20:05

JM10. Ohh thank you. I'll keep that in mind.

I wouldn't pay extra just for the stamp though, because as you can see it is tiny.

If your dd is happy with a cheaper chain in exchange for a bigger charm then go for it

I used to do a silversmithing course and night school and we would order from Cooksons. Good quality items

Maybe you can't see actually, I don't know if that picture worked or not 🤷🏼

BringPizza · 12/01/2021 20:06

I have a silver Tiffany necklace that I have worn constantly since I got it Christmas 2005. The chain snapped about 5 or 6 years ago, I snagged it while I was taking off a fluffy jumper and yanked on it, and I had to send it back to Tiffany to have the chain changed since the Tiffany tag on the smallest end of the chain wouldn't go through the loop on the pendant so there's obviously some jiggery pokery going on there. The chains are pretty robust, I constantly catch it with a hairbrush/scarf etc Personally I would get the Tiffany chain so it's 'proper' but if your daughter would rather have a larger pendant and chain from elsewhere then I'd go with that, it's her neck Smile

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/01/2021 20:11

She's happy with the compromise Jm10 . I can see the pic. Thank you. Its a teeny stamp isn't it! Thanks 😊

Elsabet. Thank you. I'll look.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/01/2021 20:14

Thanks @BringPizza (epic name!). That's my worry. Seems to good an idea to work without a problem.
She doesn't know she's getting it but when we've 'hypothetically' talked about it she's happy with the compromise. To be fair she rarely asks for anything so if I can make this happen, after a shitty year I will.
Thank you.

If you have time until her birthday you could order the charm, see if you can get another chain to loop through, and send it back if not- but that might be more expensive in the long run. I can't remember how much mine was, I think maybe it was £60ish for the replacement chain but I got it FOC in the end because they took 3 weeks about it and I lost my rag with them Grin

BringPizza · 12/01/2021 20:41

That sounds smug, there was a bit more to it than that- including me collecting a mental Tiffany-devoted stalker from their social media page Grin
