How to wear white trainers

This is probably a silly question Grin. I'm 49 and not very fashion-conscious, but am trying to develop a bit of style! I've never embraced the trainers-with-non-sporty clothes look, but a lot of people whose outfits I like seem to be wearing white (leather?) trainers with even relatively smart clothes.

Sooo I know I'm clueless and well behind the curve, but ... am I a bit old to carry this look off?And if not, can anyone recommend some (preferably fairly inexpensive), not blingy, not sporty, white trainers? I'd ask dd, but I can't face the withering look!

I wear white leather trainers with everything. Arigato is my fave and i have 3 pairs.

Honestly, trainers go with everything. Especially long skirts and trousers.

I also have a peteol green velvet jacket from massimo dutti which looks great. I wear Cos, Zara and Massimo Dutti mainly.

sofato5miles · 05/01/2021 17:41

I am 47

Procrastatron · 05/01/2021 17:43

It’s mostly a cold ankle look as not to be worn with black tights or black socks unless you have very long floor skimming wide leg trousers. But ultimately you can wear them with anything you want as long as they are super simple.
I like Superga. Many people will recommend Stan Smiths. Both will be pricier end. If you want to “test” the look most high street shops like office will offer something simple in their own range, including M&S. the beauty of this look is that simplicity is often cheaper. Depending on your build and your shoe size you may prefer a flatform sole. I like these in winter for elevating me out of puddles.

PickAChew · 05/01/2021 17:45

I only wear them in summer. They'd soon be trashed at this time of year.

Ellewoods20 · 05/01/2021 17:48

Definitely wouldn't wear white trainers at this time of year. If you want plain white, go with Stan Smith's. I prefer wearing mine with dresses. They go with all dresses, regardless of the length (okay, probably not an evening dress)

GreyHare · 05/01/2021 18:23

I like Adidas Superstars and I'm wearing them still through winter, I wear with cropped jeans or rolled up trews, not fashionable but very comfy.

lazylinguist · 05/01/2021 18:24

Thanks everybody. I live in a particularly cold, wet, muddy part of the UK, so I guess I might be better off waiting for spring! Still - I shall browse your recommendations right now.

I’m (a lot) older than you and wear white leather trainers in the summer. Try Adidas Sleek, they’re quite light and slightly dressy.

Verite1 · 05/01/2021 20:28

I wear Stan Smiths with everything in spring/summer. I have a v old battered pair I wear in winter but wouldn’t wear a new pair at the moment!!

Bluntness100 · 05/01/2021 20:33

Gosh, I’m fifty two and I wear them, but not in this weather.

I like the lk bennet ones, they are super comfy and quite elegant, as in they are not clumpy. If you know what I mean

I wear mine with dark jeans, indigo or black and leggings, either leather look or thick matt black..

Bluntness100 · 05/01/2021 20:34

Sorry just saw you said inexpensive 😞 ignore the link.

soyabean · 05/01/2021 20:44

I just bought some totally plain leather ones from kin at John Lewis (sale). I’m saving them for spring.

soyabean · 05/01/2021 20:46

Bargain but only size 7

Divebar · 05/01/2021 21:08

Those Kin ones are lovely. I think the leg wear looks best with some ankle showing -although I have seen trouser suits with a full length leg and an oversized / looser jacket.
I wear mine with a midi skirt or wide leg cropped trousers in summer but I like how they’re styled here.

I'm 48 and wear Stan Smiths or Superstars (or a fab pair of old M&S slip-ons that I've almost worn out) with practically everything in spring/ summer/ autumn for as long as I can get away with. Usual style is wide-leg or loose tapered trousers, or midi skirts/ dresses (when I'm not in lockdown mode) and white trainers look good with all of it. Agree with the ankle-flash point for the most part, though I love the look with long wide-leg trousers as much as with cropped.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 05/01/2021 22:24

I have superga ones and M&S platform ones.

Coconut2010 · 05/01/2021 22:30

Outside of the house I live in Stan Smith (all white) and Air Force One white trainers (except when I go in the mud).

glas14368 · 05/01/2021 22:45

Thanks for the post OP, I have been thinking about getting some too. I'm 52 and have yet to embrace this trend.

I like these www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/shop/product/veja/net-sustain-esplar-suede-trimmed-leather-sneakers/1155865

This thread is encouraging me to buy them - although I've already said on Mumsnet that I am going to try not to buy new stuff this year. I am very weak

Danu2021 · 05/01/2021 22:52

I feel too old for white trainers, im a similar age, and i dress fasionably. It's just one look that looks like an insouciant basic on a 30 year old but a bit try hard on a 50 ish woman. I love trainers though. I still wear them. Id go for black/coloured ones. Feel less sheople in trainers that arent white.

Danu2021 · 05/01/2021 22:55

Something like this but cheaper 🤞🙏

If you’re not sure and worried about budget you get some great ones on ASOS dirt cheap.

I like those Asos ones, Bluntness100!

It's just one look that looks like an insouciant basic on a 30 year old but a bit try hard on a 50 ish woman.

That's precisely what I'd been wondering! I think I'll go for it anyway though. Grin I also bought my first ever pair of DMs not long ago, after similar concerns and hesitation. I really like them, but am still a bit uncertain about how to style them. I fear the white trainers move might have to be part of a bit of a wardrobe update. I'm obviously having a bit of an 'about to turn 50' identity crisis. Grin

Thanks again everyone for the trainer recommendations and also info about what you wear with them.

What do we think of these ones? Asos again, but leather
