Where do your 40-something husbands buy clothes?

DH turns 42 next week. He really needs some new clothes, but has no idea where to shop anymore. He rarely buys clothes and isn't that interested in them. Likes good quality basics, no massive logos, casual as WFH full time.

He lives in a couple of tshirts from ASOS which are plain, with a kind of stripe running along the shoulder which I got him for his birthday last year.

So where do your DHs shop for casual stuff?

Mine likes Uniqlo that I can afford; otherwise he mostly buys his own expensive stuff!

Also, I signed up to Thread which recommends clothes and also sells them. Not necessarily expensive. I have never bought anything directly from them, but it has given me lots of good ideas for potential DH presents.

AliceinBunniland · 04/01/2021 15:52

My DH has a lot of gap basics, also doesn't like logos

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/01/2021 15:59

Mine gets all his stuff from skateboard websites!

Respectabitch · 04/01/2021 16:03

He likes Cos and Kin. Gets basic t-shirts from Hugo Boss, All Saints etc. Also a smattering of H&M for cheap bits.

Jobsharenightmare · 04/01/2021 16:08

Mine likes the mid ranges from John Lewis. So brands like Scotch and Soda, Diesel, All Saints.

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 04/01/2021 16:15

My DH goes for brands like Patagonia, Howies, Rab

  • active, ethical brands that use good materials (eg. organic & fairtrade cotton etc.) and which support good causes.
Lucked · 04/01/2021 16:18

Mine doesn’t like any brands. His chinos for work are M&S. I buy work shirts when needed from M&S and Next. He has jeans from M&S and LandsEnd. He mostly wears polo shirts and has a large variety mostly GAP, M&S and John Lewis bought on sale. Lounge wear I have picked him up from Next. He has a smart pea coat, a ski jacket and an old leather jacket. Casual shoes tend to be merrels.

NowellSingWe · 04/01/2021 16:23

Gap and Sainsbury's

MrsR87 · 04/01/2021 16:27

My DH is 41.

He’s fussy on jeans and gets them all from Levi’s.

For tops, he doesn’t have a massive amount of choice as many brands are too long for his torso. So jumpers are usually next and T-shirts are often Jack Jones and Levi’s.

He often get his shirts from John Lewis..either their own brand or some of the brands they sel such as Reiss.

He’s more interested in fit and wearability and so will pay whatever as long as it’s suitable.

sheslittlebutfierce · 04/01/2021 16:28

Jacamo has a good range

Lulu1919 · 04/01/2021 16:35

NEXT for jeans and shirts and T shirts
Odd thing from M and S
He's 55
Not a clothes person really ...adult daughters buy him bits for birthday and Christmas ...usually Crew

umberellaonesie · 04/01/2021 16:36

Lands end, Marks and Spencer and next.

Firenight · 04/01/2021 16:38

Fat Face, Weird Fish, M&Sz Joe Browns

Swifey40 · 04/01/2021 16:41

Mine is 42 also and he mostly uses Gap, Crew clothing, Saltrock, Next and Joules.
Also Fatface and White Stuff.

Onedropbeat · 04/01/2021 16:42

Mads Norgaard
Sunspel
Barbour
Gap

missyB1 · 04/01/2021 16:48

Jeans - Levis is all he will wear.
Rugby shirts - online sports shops
Coats - usually Rugby coats
T shirts - Crew clothing
Polo T shirts - Lacoste or Crew
Jumpers / sweatshirts - Crew
Shorts - Dockers

That’s pretty much all of his wardrobe and most of it is ancient! Grin

SillyUnMurphy · 04/01/2021 16:48

My DH is 40 and loves Uniqlo but he is slim (I don’t think they are really made for bigger men). He also likes Next and sometimes M&S.

Kangaroo1 · 04/01/2021 17:07

My DH loves Muji, H&M basics and a few bits from Stitch Fix

AriesTheRam · 04/01/2021 17:12

Police.
Boss.
Duck and Cover.
French Connection.
Armani.

NastyBlouse · 04/01/2021 17:18

DH is early 40s. He buys from:

Reiss
Asket (their basics are brilliant, last for ages and wash really well)
Ron Dorff
Ted Baker
Spoke
Sunspel
Polo Ralf Lauren

RoSEbuds6 · 04/01/2021 17:28

My DH wears:
Smedley fine knits, or Uniqlo versions
Spoke chinos
Grenson shoes.
Universal Works jackets
He also likes Cos and Arket.
He spends much more of clothes than I do!

OhTheTastyNuts · 04/01/2021 18:34

Loads of great suggestions!

He's tall and lean with a really long torso so fit can be tricky sometimes. I'll get looking now!

Thanks all!

Excellent basics from Sainsbury Tu, Lands End, Boden, Uniqlo, odd gem from TK Maxx and on occasion even Primark, with some of the best collarless white cotton shirts I've ever bought for the Hubster, beating much more expensive brands for quality. His splurge items have been from Cordings, but cost per wear is in the pennies now.

applecatchers36 · 04/01/2021 18:53

He likes Albam especially for jackets, John Lewis, Boden, Gap and Napapijri which I think is some Nordic brand. He is XXL so needs European or US, Uniqlo too small

caperplips · 04/01/2021 19:41

GAP
Ted Baker
Levis
TOAST
A couple of M&S cashmere / wool jumpers in plain colours
But it's mostly GAP & Ted Baker - there's an outlet he visits about 3 times a year & he stocks up & that's him sorted. He doesn't wear suits to work. But would often wear smart jeans & jacket & shirt to meetings with clients.
