Colours that go with brown?

Have noticed a lot of brown around at the mo. Have always loved wearing brown but, leopard-print aside, have phased all my proper brown stuff out of my wardrobe and have rarely seen in it in the shops until now.

Thing is, I’d like to wear it with a bright colour, but am not really sure what goes with brown? Any advice, wise MNetters? Thanks!

Pinks, beige, camel, white, cream

I love the monochrome chocolate brown look, different fabrics/materials though. As in silk skirt and cashmere jumper.

Ardnassa · 30/12/2020 10:34

I love brown. In terms of what goes with it, think that depends on what shade and whether is warm or cool.

Warm brown suits me better and I find it goes very well in a tonal outfit (tan, chocolate, caramel), with cream, khaki, deep orange or olive. Also like a bit of black/brown together (am half Italian and this happens a lot in my half-home town) though believe that is not universally liked here. Navy and tan is a classic combination too.

It’s not just whether it is a warm or cool brown but what skin tone you have that you need to throw into the mix as well.

MairzyDoats · 30/12/2020 10:39

I find brown easy but think it works best with tonal shades so right through cream to caramel to black. Olive green and pale blue can work too. Pinks and oranges can make you look like a liquorice allsort though Grin

This outfit has it about right, shades of brown with brighter highlights

I like rust colours with brown, but no idea if that's in at the moment!

Sittinginmyoodie · 30/12/2020 11:00

I remember in the 00's there was a lot of brown around. Well, I was wearing a lot of brown. Grin I used to wear it in the same way I'd wear black or navy. Dark brown trousers and skirts with a bright coloured top. Like turquoise, red, pink.

I'm feeling very old at the prospect of the 00s coming "back"

TableNiner · 30/12/2020 13:48

Red, camel, cream, teal, navy

TheScapegoatNoMore · 30/12/2020 13:50

cherry, magenta

ILoveShula · 30/12/2020 13:50

Orange. Brown was the new black in 1995.

TheScapegoatNoMore · 30/12/2020 13:51

Whoever said that was seriously disturbed.

Vellinbracelet · 30/12/2020 13:53

Different shades of blue

Ghostlyglow · 30/12/2020 15:44

Bright green, pink.

tenlittlecygnets · 30/12/2020 16:01

Teal, pink, cream, turquoise

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 30/12/2020 16:07

Teal or royal blue. Just something a little different. I think a little black is ok but as another said it doesn't seem like the done thing here.

Please not pink. It made me think of neapolitan icecream.

quirkychick · 30/12/2020 16:20

I suit cooler colours so would go for a dark brown or taupe. I like dark brown, white/grey/black for a neutral palette. Other colours I would pair with purples/burgundies/berry shades, or blues.

JaquelineBeanstalk · 30/12/2020 16:26

What sort of brown, though, there is a huge range!

Chocolate brown- royal purple or duck egg blue
Chestnut-terracotta/ rust or turquoise
Lighter shades- mustard or scarlet

VanillaAndOrange · 30/12/2020 16:30

Lilac, cream, pink.

NowellSingWe · 30/12/2020 22:28

Mustard yellow
Olive green
Baby pink
Baby blue
Beige
Orange

It really depends on the shade of brown though

MrPickles73 · 30/12/2020 22:41

Pale blue

RacheyCat · 31/12/2020 00:10

I think the trend, if you like, is to wear it, as another pp said, tonally. So go from cream to beige to other shades of brown and soft pinks.

Brown does match with other colours, like a soft blue, but I wouldn't wear it like that currently.

I would also wear brown with black. Big chunky brown jumper, fitted black trousers, brown over the knee flat boots.

User9574 · 31/12/2020 00:28

Rust and earthy browns will be in next year (like I know, I looked up Pantone 2021).

I find rust a hard one, it has to be the right brown or can look like a pile of mud on me. Also textures- a silk rusty vest top or dress can look amazing, shiny dark brown leather, grainy chocolate wool etc.

Sky blue is also going to be in next year and in my mind a sky blue would look amazing with the right shade of brown. Also teal, duck egg, although to my mind that always makes me think of living room decor.

Brown and lime might pop?

Crisp white and brown is another good contrast.

Red and brown is more harmonious, brown and plummy colours also harmonious, taupes, creams.

Basically decide what shade of brown suits you and how harmonious or contrasty a look you want.

ozymandiusking · 31/12/2020 00:35

Light blue
Peach
Cream
