Hello - let's hope we get a bit more glamour this year and fingers crossed for some tiara watching....

Speaking of the royal families of Sweden and Norway (well, we were at some point), I wanted to let people know about an upcoming series that will soon be on public television in the US. I don't know whether it has been shown in the UK or not, but hopefully it will be available. It is called Atlantic Crossing and it is about Crown Princess Martha of Norway, born a princess of Sweden, and her years living in the US during World War II, including her friendship with Franklin Roosevelt. She was the present King Harald's mother.

Maireas · 15/02/2021 20:30

Thank you, Seneca - that looks interesting, hopefully available to us in some form.

An interesting thought about the Sussex children : on Charles' accession they will be legally hold the title of Prince (or Princess). As US citizens they could run for President. Wouldn't it be strange to have President Prince or Princess??
Or is that just not a possibility??

SenecaFallsRedux · 15/02/2021 21:29

It certainly possible. However, I think that if either of them decided to run for president they would likely give up the use of any royal titles.

They both would qualify to hold the office of president on reaching age 35 as they have the other qualification which is birthright citizenship.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 15/02/2021 21:36

That sounds an interesting programme Seneca

Changing royal subject I came across this article about Queen Victoria & the mourning jewellery she had made or was made for her after the death of her daughter Princess Alice. (Prince Philip's maternal great grandmother)
Alice was only 35 when she died from diphtheria.

SenecaFallsRedux · 15/02/2021 21:58

That's interesting about Queen Victoria's mourning jewelry for Alice. Also interesting that they wound up with Patricia Mountbatten. Of course, she was also a direct descendant of Princess Alice.

Maireas · 15/02/2021 22:23

I wonder why Countess Mountbatten's family are selling them? Mourning jewellery is such a Victorian concept, and fell out of favour.

Thanks Seneca. I've just looked it up and now fervently hope Atlantic Crossing will be screened in the UK. It stars the main actress from The Bridge, I see, and Kyle MacLachlan. Looks great.

I also enjoyed that article about Queen Victoria's mourning jewels. Thanks for posting.

Re M&H children, the unborn baby could potentially be US president but you have to be born in the US so that counts Archie out as he was born in the Portland in London. I'm not 100% sure Archie is a prince either or even a Duke.

Maireas · 16/02/2021 19:40

Archie is the heir to a dukedom, and could use the courtesy title of Earl of Dumbarton. On the accession of Charles he would be styled Prince as a grandson of the monarch in the male line.

You don't have to be born in the US to have birthright citizenship. A child born outside the US to an American parent also has birthright citizenship, subject to some requirements, which Archie meets. So when he is 35, assuming he has not renounced his citizenship, he would meet the qualifications for the presidency.

The requirement is to be a natural born citizen, which essentially means you don't have to go through a naturalization process to become a citizen. Archie has been a US citizen since his birth.

Off the baby topic, but I saw this photo yesterday and it occurred to me that I've never noticed that Eugenie wore peep toed shoes for her wedding!

And I never noticed that she had blue flowers in her bouquet!
Apparently baby blue thistles:

I wonder what new baby Brooksbank will be called?

frugalkitty · 17/02/2021 09:51

The flowers I did notice at the time because it's unusual for royal brides to carry coloured flowers.

Apparently, the baby is having Stamp as a middle name.......my guess is something easy to spell! I bet Eugenie goes for something that people know how to pronounce.

paradyning · 17/02/2021 13:53

Think her shoes were Charlotte Olympia

Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital 'as a precaution as he has been feeling unwell', hopefully he will make a quick recovery.

mathanxiety · 17/02/2021 16:39

The blue thistles were a reference to Eugenie's Scottish heritage.

Apropos of nothing, they're my mum's favourite flower.

JollyGreenGiantess · 17/02/2021 18:12

Stamp???!!!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 17/02/2021 18:33

Stamp is a family name that she may or may not use.
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.marieclaire.com/celebrity/amp35518006/princess-eugenie-baby-name-middle/

Many Scottish families or families with Scottish heritage use surnames usually mother's maiden names as an extra middle name.
My DF is Scottish so I've given my DD my maiden name as one of her middle names.
One of my DSis's double barrelled her surname so DSis is Mrs maiden name + husband's surname.

frugalkitty · 17/02/2021 19:06

I'd definitely have noticed those shoes at the time if I'd seen them, I hate t-bars with a passion after being made to wear them as a child when all I wanted was a pair or dolly shoes or, wait while my mum clutches her pearls, slip ons! Grin

MaudTheInvincible · 17/02/2021 19:34

wait while my mum clutches her pearls

Grin slip ons are just not sensible. I remember hankering after a pair of pale pink cowboy boots with a small heel when I was about ten. Desperate for them, I was.

SenecaFallsRedux · 17/02/2021 20:10

Many Scottish families or families with Scottish heritage use surnames usually mother's maiden names as an extra middle name.

I think this is one of the origins of using surnames as middle names or even first names by so many people in the US for both boys and girls. It definitely is in my family. Many Scottish surnames work well as first or second names.

RockaLock · 17/02/2021 21:03

My paternal grandparents were Scottish, and I used my maiden name as a middle name for DS2 (although it is also a "normal" boys name anyway. I'm not sure that I would have used Stamp!)

I'm not even vaguely royally connected, though Sad

BobbinAround · 17/02/2021 23:22

No royal connections here but Scottish DH has his DM's maiden name as a middle name and our DC have my maiden name as a middle name. I like it, it's a nice way to pass on family names.
