I know it’s said that you shouldn’t but does anyone do this ? My hair is disgusting
Day after washing it is ok and next day totally greasy again and I’ve never washed it daily but I’m spending every second and third day feeling disgusting
Dry shampoo doesn’t work

I've washed mine daily since I was a teenager and I am now 58. It isn't oily but it is very fine I just look like Worzel Gummidge when I get up. Plus I am quite a warm person and my head feels sweaty in the morning. I love the feeling of clean newly washed hair in the morning.

TableNiner · 23/12/2020 17:30

I have to wash mine every day, every other day max, depending on style and what I'm doing. It has got marginally better with age but my scalp and hair are disgusting if I don't keep on top of washing out all the oil. My hair changes colour if not washed the second day, goes much darker with the oil
I do think it's worse in a big city with lots of pollution too, or if you use a lot of styling products

SpeckledyHen · 23/12/2020 17:36

I have washed my hair daily since I was a teenager and I’m now 65 . I couldn’t stand not washing it as I would hate to be dirty .

schnubbins · 23/12/2020 17:40

I am in my mid 50's and have shoulder length wavy hair .I wash it every day and always have since I was about 20 years old ,otherwise i just don't wake up all day.My hair is healthy and strong and very thick. I just use shampoo and conditioner or hair mask , never ever any product apart from colour which I only started when I started going grey which was about 6 years ago.

MsIrrational · 23/12/2020 17:51

I wash my hair everyday too.

My hair never used to grow healthily past shoulder length and I thought the daily washing might have contributed to that along with dyeing my hair quarterly and straightening my hair daily.

Anyway, I stopped dying and straightening my hair and it hasn't stopped growing despite daily washing! It's nearly at my bum! So I don't think washing you hair daily causes any harm whatsoever and I've no idea why it's desirable to wash it less.

mrscampbellblackagain · 23/12/2020 17:57

I wash my hair everyday and it is in good condition.

How often you should/do wash your hair depends on your hair type and how well you can deal with dirty hair.

I am not a fan of dry shampoo - I know its not the same but reminds me of people spraying on deodorant rather than actually washing Wink

autumngold6 · 23/12/2020 18:06

I'm 61 and have washed my hair daily since I was a teenager. If I don't it looks greasy, sticks out and my scalp itches. My hair is long, thick and in good condition. I just comb it and give it a very quick dry with the hairdryer rather than putting a lot of heat on it. Most people I know do the same. I wasn't aware of this idea of avoiding daily hair washing until I came onto Mumsnet.

rc22 · 23/12/2020 18:08

I wash mine everyday. It's very fine and quickly gets greasy if I don't. Dry shampoo makes me itchy. My hairdresser always says my hair is in good condition so doesn't seem to be doing any harm.

Coffeepot72 · 23/12/2020 19:07

I’ve tried to train my hair many times over the years, but I now accept that this won’t work for me. And why spend some of my days looking/feeling rough when hot running water and shampoo is readily available!

Coffeepot72 · 23/12/2020 19:08

PS - my Grandma always suggested you shouldn’t wash your hair when you’re on your period, heaven knows where that came from!

WrinklesShminkles · 23/12/2020 19:38

I think washing your hair daily is fine if it gets greasy quickly. I suspect that heat styling it daily is more of an issue. I wash mine daily but air-dry it and it's in great condition.

MsHedgehog · 23/12/2020 23:44

I have really long thick hair. I used to watch my hair daily because I liked how fresh it looked every day, and then it would look greasy on the second day.

But mine got greasy so quickly because I was washing it every day, if that makes sense. The more you wash, the quicker it gets greasy. I very painfully moved to every other day, and the greasiness gradually stopped and my hair looked good on second day too.

Since wfh I've moved to every three days now (I'm at home and not going anywhere) and I've noticed my hair staying clean for longer now.

MsHedgehog · 23/12/2020 23:45

@Coffeepot72 My grandmother would say the same too (and still does...). She says that when you wash your hair you stop bleeding, so you end up keeping in old blood. Obviously I think it's nonsense, but interesting that there's someone else out there who says it!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/12/2020 00:08

I wash my hair every day, and everyone says how shiny and healthy it is. Today it has been washed three times - in the morning, at the hairdresser in the afternoon, then in the evening to get rid of the bits of hair.

grassisjeweled · 24/12/2020 01:27

I wash mine every other day. It's so gross on the second day, it looks wet.

StarlightLady · 24/12/2020 06:27

I don’t wash my hair daily this time of year, but l tend to in the warmer weather. I find that regular changing of conditioner brands helps it keep its body.

Kintsugi16 · 24/12/2020 06:28

I’m a once a week hair washer.
You will all think I’m disgusting Grin

MoltonSilver · 24/12/2020 09:05

Why are you waiting days to wash it when it makes you feel awful? Just wash it. There's no set rule that suits everyone's hair.

Mariposa123 · 24/12/2020 09:32

I have very curly hair, and I wake up with awful bed hair. Because I can’t brush it, washing it every morning is the only way to make it halfway presentable!

dingledongle · 24/12/2020 09:48

I would try to start reducing the number of times you wash it, from every day to every other day, to once every three days.

I would guess you are encouraging your scalp/hair to produce more oil the more you wash it

I would avoid sls/paraben shampoos, maybe a shampoo bar?

Crimeismymiddlename · 24/12/2020 10:12

Everyday hair washer since I was a teenager. Short hair that is easy to dry and style. As I get older I could leave it a day, and have tried at times to train it but honestly I love fresh, clean hair and don’t feel right if I leave the house without having washed it.

CleverCatty · 24/12/2020 10:35

@Fluffycloudland77

Try a shampoo brush too, it gets hair so much cleaner.
ah - been thinking about one of these and will get one now!
CleverCatty · 24/12/2020 10:37

Same - I used to wash my hair every other day and now it's every 3 days if I can.

Mostly due to damage and it's bad to wash it too much now but I use dry shampoo if needed inbetween.

Also, conditioner only on ends or below ear etc and L'Oreal Clay Shampoo is good for grease though I use others too.

MsHedgehog · 24/12/2020 11:09

For those who want to start trying to move from every day to every other day, I avoided shampoos and conditioners that have silicone in them and would use a deep clean shampoo once every couple of weeks.

Silicone products can build up in your hair, and that's what makes it look flat and greasy sometimes.

ElspethFlashman · 24/12/2020 11:10

What on earth is a shampoo brush when it's at home??
