Are you wearing the oversized look?

It looks great on the models but I am 5’4’’ with a slight build. I have just ordered an oversized black coat which is lovely but does swamp me. Is this a look the average person can wear?

I love the over sized look but I think it needs to be balanced with something else that is slim fitted. Like skinny jeans or leggings with a massive oversized shirt, hoodie or coat. Or if you're doing the oversized bell bottom trousers or maxi skirt then wear it with a slim fit top or jacket.

Annasgirl · 10/12/2020 16:52

What is the oversized look? I'm petite so might be doing it without realising OP.

But if you mean, Cocoon style coat - I have a fabulous one and wear it lots. But as Delphine said, only with skinny jeans or leggings - not with wide look pants or a dress.

TableNiner · 10/12/2020 17:54

I can't seem to pull this off at all. I hate loads of material swamping me, especially around my wrists, and nothing hangs nicely and I look very masculine, which is a look but not one that suits me much. I also seem to look quite fat even though I am not overweight. I think it might be because my shoulders are very broad and I have a large bust, might work better if you have a more delicate frame. I have retreated back to my skinny jeans and fitted cardigans and have had to accept I do not look at all on trend!

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 10/12/2020 17:56

When you're curvy and a bit overweight like me, it just screams "trying to hide the lard and failing." So that's a nope from me.

Plastichearts · 10/12/2020 20:37

Yes the coat definitely looks better now I’ve tried it on with skinny jeans. You have to get the balance right.

I am and I’ve gotten a bit fat during lock down but it still looks ok. I wear baggy with baggy... I’m 5’8” though.

Miseryisabutterfly · 10/12/2020 20:48

I love the trying to hide the lard and failing comment. Maybe that is me 😂

Ffsnosexallowed · 10/12/2020 20:48

All my clothes are naturally oversized

justanotherneighinparadise · 10/12/2020 20:48

I do have an oversized coat that works really well with skinny jeans. So I guess I am trendy at last!

Laska2Meryls · 10/12/2020 20:51

Yes! I really love the cool look of some of my female Danish in law's so have been trying to get similar here, but without the huge DK prices!
Here, Toast trousers and Kin ( from John Lewis) top ..
I am not skinny! But med height 5' 6

I have a couple of oversized sweatshirts. I don’t wear them with skinny particularly I wear them with cropped trousers and chunky trainers or shoes. I’m not young and I’m a size 16/18 but find it’s more about proportion.

puttergal · 10/12/2020 20:54

I always have something oversized on, either top or bottom half as I'm slim but curvy (if that makes sense) and I don't like feeling like I'm showing the shape of my body.

I love an oversized coat!

LunaTheCat · 11/12/2020 09:09

I love it - I am short so shouldn’t though- Cos does it well and NZ brand called Kowtow.

Divebar · 11/12/2020 09:10

Monki is good if you don’t want to spend a lot on the trend. I like their oversized shirts and shirt dresses.

evilharpy · 11/12/2020 09:16

I don't think it suits me. I look like a 7 year old wearing my dad's clothes. (And I'm 40 so that's not a good look.)

I have however just acquired this oversized lightweight camo jacket thing which is much nicer in real life and I plan to wear it with a sparkly t shirt and skinny jeans. It's lightweight enough to not make me look bulky. I think maybe I can do oversized OR heavy fabrics but not both.

@Laska2Meryls - you look fabulous! Super cool, but also very classy outfit Glitterball

Echobelly · 11/12/2020 09:27

Nope, I'm only 5ft1, I'd look totally swamped in any of it!

Joeyandpacey · 11/12/2020 09:29

It looks dreadful on me. I’m tall with a small frame and an ‘hourglass’ figure which means if I’m not cinched in at the waist I just look huge or in drag or something. It’s a shame because on others it looks really cool.

ladyvimes · 11/12/2020 09:30

I love it! I have a mum tum but am generally slimish (size 12 5’7”) and find it all quite flattering but I agree it’s how you style it.
It’s my day off today so wearing mom jeans and an oversized sweater. Super comfy and casual but looks good too.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 11/12/2020 10:40

I am 5’2” and an overweight hourglass, and I find that I need to buy oversized things in a size small. I’d usually be a medium (unless it’s Zara, grr). Otherwise they just look too big and bulky. I have a nice H&M oversized wool coat in a size small.

Laska2Meryls · 11/12/2020 10:46

SomethingToldTheWildGeese Thanks!
That Kin top is fab ,I think.. So much that I ordered it in Khaki also! Blush

You really need to size down though, this is the XS!

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 11/12/2020 11:04

@Laska2Meryls - I can understand why you got both! I'm seriously considering copying you - is it this?

www.johnlewis.com/kin-funnel-neck-tunic-top/khaki/p5207641

(I'm not sure if that link will work - I'm not very good at them! Also - that really is a big XS!)

Laska2Meryls · 11/12/2020 11:10
