Is anyone else quite excited about the whole Sloane Ranger revival?

I'm on the lookout for a white shirt for under jumpers, a pair of riding boot type things and am considering a string of (fake / cheap) pearls. I think I've reached peak trainers and hoodies tbh. Excited to get out of them now, although they will always be in my wardrobe for comfort and sport.

I feel your frustration at lockdown clothes but apart from the boots ( do love good boots ) it’s a hard no from me
Way too twee

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 11:02

I'm not sure I'll go full pie crust collar tbf... I'd look horrendous as I'm large of nork. But I definitely am leaning towards loafers or boots instead of trainers, midi skirts and jackets etc.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 11:06

Or do I mean pie frill?

I love pie crust collars but being a northern lass the vibe I am aiming for is more Jo March than sloaney pony.

Also do like loafers and navy quilted jackets so maybe I'm deluding myself!

TooMinty · 05/12/2020 11:35

I might go for a crisp white shirt, any recommendations? (can't be too expensive as I also drink red wine and am clumsy).

But don't think I can get excited about the rest, sorry 😞

TheChineseChicken · 05/12/2020 11:45

Uniqlo is good for white shirts. The best one I have from there for going under things is actually quite fine and has a slight stretch to it. Also doesn’t need ironing! A few years old now though so they might not have a similar one now

SamVimesFavouriteDragon · 05/12/2020 11:51

Yes! Grin didn't know it was happening, but I am definitely excited

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 11:53

I am making a little Pinterest collection of images. I'm that excited Grin.

@ferretface, I actually live right in Sloany Pony country, but my Belfast brogue ruins the illusion somewhat Grin!

Hmm ... Having been there first time around (as horrified observer) I'm not sure I'd welcome a return of the viciously ambitious socialising; 20 year olds sending stiff card invitations to completely unironic midweek black tie dinners. (I was the only person I knew who didn't move into a trust funded South Ken flat immediately after graduation.)

But I love a pie-crust collar. And any type of clothing / footwear that might be dried on or next to an Aga ...

VinylDetective · 05/12/2020 12:04

I’ve taken to wearing a pearl necklace and earrings with joggers, hi-top leather trainers and a jumper. The high/low vibe works really well.

Floisme · 05/12/2020 12:10

I remember it more as a running joke than an actual trend, although it might have caught on more in London.
Seeing as I don't suit a white shirt, already wear loafers and still can't look at a pie crust collar without thinking of poor old Diana, I'm probably out, although I'll keep an eye on what happens with pearls.

Purplehatsandflowers · 05/12/2020 12:15

Don't need to get fake cheap pearls. You can get real pearls for fairly good prices at auctions and at pearl companies. :)

Oh good God no. None of that shite. Just the clothes.

@Purplehatsandflowers, thank you! I actually just found a nice set (necklace and earrings) for £30! I've ordered. I actually really suit ivory pearls imo, so I think it will work out...

Purplehatsandflowers · 05/12/2020 12:19

O ivory- you definitely have an eye for the classically elegant. :)

Actually I have just bought some pearl studs thanks to this thread. :)

Thanks purple Smile!

This. Apart from the love of a pie crust collar which is patently the domain of total sartorial perverts!
mymadworld · 05/12/2020 12:43

I love some elements of the Sloane ranger revival (mainly the clothes) but do think you need to resist the temptation to recreate the whole look - pearls and Alice bands for example - or you'll just look like like you're stuck in the past.

That said, I do love a nice white shirts and have two pairs of riding style knee boots and currently on the hunt for a knitted fitted tank top (anyone?) but collar will be firmly kept down and not a sniff of Barbour for me Grin.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 12:47

I do like the knitted tank tops too Blush.

I think, if you go all the way, pearls plus alice band, plus pie frill shirt, it looks better if you go really exaggerated. Like padded velvet Alice band, with massive earrings. Personally, I wouldn't suit that, but I've seen some pictures online where I think this looks great. They are models though, so maybe unrealistic for the rest of us.

there is a US blogger called the Daily connoisseur who has a leaning towards the sloane look. She is an interesting mixture of elegant yet down to earth and accessible.

www.youtube.com/user/TheDailyConnoisseur

I like her alot. Thanks to her I bought myself some lovely silk pyjamas.

Floisme · 05/12/2020 13:00

Oh I love a tank top and already own a Barbour so maybe I've been one all along Grin

I guess I'm just a bit Hmmat the idea that it's a revival. Like I've said, the phrase was a term of derision at the time - at least it was in my world. No-one, but no-one I knew either dressed or aspired to dress like this. But that's not to say some elements aren't an appealing antidote to the trainers and loungewear trend.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 13:13

I think it's meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. So the fact that it used to be a term of derision and not aspirational, doesn't make it less fun to dress that way. Quite the opposite imo!

PegasusReturns · 05/12/2020 13:14

As a 10 year old I totally aspired to growing up into the Paula Hamilton chuck my pearl necklace in the bin womanhood.

The hair, the suit it all seemed so perfect Grin

Floisme · 05/12/2020 13:24

Ok talk to me about pearls and tank tops and I might reconsider. But please, no pie crust collars Grin

Butterymuffin · 05/12/2020 13:26

Had no idea this was happening but I can see myself spending an enjoyable hour or two looking at examples, if anyone wants to share any more blogs or other links...
