Is anyone else quite excited about the whole Sloane Ranger revival?

I'm on the lookout for a white shirt for under jumpers, a pair of riding boot type things and am considering a string of (fake / cheap) pearls. I think I've reached peak trainers and hoodies tbh. Excited to get out of them now, although they will always be in my wardrobe for comfort and sport.

I remember one Saturday in the 80s chasing round several London branches of the Sock Shop in search of a particular black velvet bow hairslide. Included a bomb scare while we were in the Villiers Street branch. Those were the days!

GoldfishParade · 05/12/2020 16:39

I hate the look, but we've had sportswear, the gringe revival will probably end soon, so....what's next?

thedevilinablackdress · 05/12/2020 17:02

'Y2K' fashion seems to be coming in with the young'uns. Handkerchief tops, low cut jeans...

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 17:10

Oh Christ, I heard that about low rise jeans Shock! Nooooooooo never again. They are not for me at all.

Noooo! Tell me it ain't so! I have been stockpiling jeans against the inevitable but the last run without high-rise skinnies seemed to last about 20 years.

I'll be carried out and buried in my last pair, won't I? Worn so thin you can read through the seat of the pants.Grin

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 17:15

They will prise my non low-rise (mid or high will do) from my cold dead fingers Xmas Grin.

OOh am I coming into fashion.finally!? Grin
I'll pass on the pearls but living in the countryside with a dog to walk I live in Ariat boots and a Barbour anyway.... (and was wearing one in the 80s..less a fashion item than a 'at Uni in Wales and it rains all the time' deal!)
I do love my fitted long Musto Tweed coat too but that's definitely 'for best'

CherryValanc · 05/12/2020 17:24

I'm still so traumatised by the Alicebands forced on my head in the 80s I now need to go lie down. I can still feel the pain behind the ears.

Think this thread needed a trigger warning for those who have headband-related distress.

Why were they so tight? WHY!!!

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 17:26

Sorry cherry Flowers. We've all been there! Some of those things were just awful. Designed for discomfort surely! I don't think I ever wore one for longer than a few minutes.

thedevilinablackdress · 05/12/2020 17:32

I've was always convinced that my head was a weird shape because headbands just will not stay on it.

No way.. too soon
MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 17:35

Seems there isn’t much to do with trends but cycle through the decades!

Nothing new under the sun and all that!

I don't think it's exactly cyclical as I do think what is going on at the time in politics and the like is reflected in art and design. For example after WWI, womens fashion became more comfortable and practical and a bit daring, because of their role in the war effort.

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 19:19

True I don’t think it’s exactly timed but looser

I also think it can be inspired and different -Celine for example makes beautiful versions of part trends. But I do think for past decade we’ve done 70s, 80s, 90s on repeat. I don’t mind but quite interesting.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 19:26

Yes, I find it all fascinating as well. People think fashion is a superficial subject but it really isn't to me.

OP posts:
PoulePouletteEternellement · 05/12/2020 19:52

Fashion could never be a superficial subject! How we present ourselves as human beings is such a profound expression of so many things: relative economic power, self-perception in the built and natural environment, attitudes towards sexuality and privacy, group cohesion and individualism, political security ...

And we're constantly able to see and experience the contrast between the vision of the greatest designers and the sheer craftsmanship involved and the mass produced, throw away industry that clothes most of us.

Given that wearing clothes is so bound up with our evolution it's extraordinary that anyone could ever believe fashion is unimportant.

ScrapThatThen · 05/12/2020 19:59

Oh my hair really suits sloane and I can definitely do pearls. It's been the funniest thing seeing my teens graduating into eighties fashions with hair scrunchies, argyle jumpers, print t shirts, block colours.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 20:15

Yes poule! Exactly. Well said.

Xmas Grin scrap, I still can't get back on board with scrunchies! Luckily, my hair is short enough never to need one.

@PerkingFaintly

So, Uniqlo white shirts.

Do they accommodate norks? I love a good, crisp white shirt but am very hourglass and most make me look like a barmaid in a Carry On film.

Not sure - I am very much small of tit
PerkingFaintly · 05/12/2020 20:48

Thank you, TheChineseChicken. Although also, curse you and your small-titted elegance. Grin

GoldfishParade · 05/12/2020 22:39

I think we're due a mainstream androgynous trend surely?

Funny theres all this talk of gender fluidity and equality but this isnt translating into fashion

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 22:41

I reckon Di’s haircut - The Crown - version could come back. She looked brilliant.

sansou · 05/12/2020 23:29

I'll pass since I turned up my shirt collar the first time round in my early teens. And I spent a lot of time with curling tongs doing the Diana flick and set it with a load of hairspray so that it didn't actually flick. Grin

VanityWitch · 06/12/2020 08:19

I haven't watched the Crown, but they reference it a lot in all the articles about sloane ranger style! May have to start watching.

I also love her shortish hair. It fell out of favour though and all the royals seem to go for super long hair these days. Zara Phillips has shortish hair actually.

I do wonder about an androgynous look and definitely think short hair has been threatening to come back. Where I live most women still have long hair though. I have a sister in a city in the north and she says that the women there still heavily favour extensions. Wonder if that look will ever fall out of favour in some circles. Difficult to imagine.
