Is anyone else quite excited about the whole Sloane Ranger revival?

I'm on the lookout for a white shirt for under jumpers, a pair of riding boot type things and am considering a string of (fake / cheap) pearls. I think I've reached peak trainers and hoodies tbh. Excited to get out of them now, although they will always be in my wardrobe for comfort and sport.

I'm on the lookout for some more bloggers buttery. Will post when I find some.

Not a blog, but an article here:

the phrase was a term of derision at the time - at least it was in my world. No-one, but no-one I knew either dressed or aspired to dress like this.

I was clearly singularly unfortunate! The people I fell amongst in the 80s simply were the people on whom the original book must have been based, in terms of lifestyle, attitude and clothes. And, to be frank, people revelled in their wealth, notoriety and freedom to have unlimited fun.

Clothes? Girls were given taffeta ball gowns for eighteenth birthdays, boys received Savile Row suits. We wore black Salvatore Ferragamo Vara shoes in Town, pearls and brooches with sweatshirts or Norwegian knitwear at their parents' country houses at the weekend. I had lots of pairs of coloured tights, and bought cashmere cardigans from the men's department of M&S or Jaeger in the sales. (But equally a large part of my undergrad wardrobe came from a vintage shop in Floral Street in Covent Garden or another in Little Clarendon St in Oxford.)

It was a strange, youthfully chaotic, intermittently lovely time. But all very much in earnest.

Urgh, crisp white shirts always make me look like I'm about to serve lunch somewhere.

Floisme · 05/12/2020 13:56

Different worlds Poule different worlds! And no Internet to bring us together.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 14:04

Found this one, which I think is subtly Sloanie. I certainly love her style, whatever it might be!

There is also an article in the DM if you google Sloane Style 2020 or something.

I love this look but sadly am just too fat Smile

Oxymoron. True Sloane style is loud and proud. Wide red braces, eye watering pinstripes, wild tweeds.

Reminds me of another thread, a few years ago, on clothes maintenance. I mentioned my best-beloved Kent, pure bristle clothes brush, purchased late 80s with earnings from my first City job. Still have it, still use it. Someone asked, with the most touching innocence, what such a thing was used for ...

After that I realised I'd have to start prefacing remarks with "In my day ..."

Well, I like her little nods to the sloanetastic, while still being subtle. Particularly that blogger's loafers and jumper round shoulders look in her most recent post. I love that look!

Not sure I can pull off the full on, loud and proud, Slpane square till I die look, but I'm looking forward to seeing it around, while I pinch bits and pieces here and there.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 14:23

Not actually pinch, you understand... I may not have several homes and a string of polo ponies, but I'm not a thief Xmas GrinXmas Wink.

I've still got the cultured pearl necklace and earrings my parents gave me in the 80s, which I would never wear together as I looked Just. Too. Sloane.

30something years later, maybe I will finally wear them as a set Grin

ApocalypseNow · 05/12/2020 14:29

I'm liking the white shirt & tank top look! Pics are from 'KarenBritChick' on Insta/YouTube.

Oo I might be fashionable! Barbour- yep quilted gillet-yep, loafers- yep (or Chelsea boots or River boots) pearl earrings not stopped wearing them, but the inherited matching necklace has not seen light of day since our wedding! The velvet headbands look will probably send me straight back down memory lane to primary school!

TooMinty · 05/12/2020 14:43

@TheChineseChicken

Uniqlo is good for white shirts. The best one I have from there for going under things is actually quite fine and has a slight stretch to it. Also doesn’t need ironing! A few years old now though so they might not have a similar one now

Thanks! Not needing to iron it would be a definite plus. I think my natural state is too scruffy to go Sloane anyway, even if I wanted to...

Purplehatsandflowers · 05/12/2020 14:53

I am guessing carrie symonds is a modern sloane. Her floral high neck dresses and velvet hair bands- she looks amazing I think, but it is not an easy look to carry off.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/12/2020 14:54

In my head, much of MN dresses like this anyway. The rest of them wear Breton tops and ballet flats Wink

Funny, I always see you all in either pinnies and Ena Sharples curlers or Jane Austen-style high-waisted Regency dresses (from all the bosom-hoiking). Grin
MargosKaftan · 05/12/2020 15:38

I did think they'd be a reaction next year to this year wearing casual /scruffy clothes all the time, and we'd be going smarter /dressy more, so I guess as a day time not office wear look, the sloane look is quite smart!

I'm not sure it suits short people (like me!), but think it can look nice. Guess it fits in with the "how to look polished" threads that pop up on here every now and then.

I do like a collar under jumper though....

DramaAlpaca · 05/12/2020 15:44

I was there the first time round. Not sure I really want to go there again at my age. I do love a crisp white shirt with a frilled cuff, but wouldn't go near a tank top (then or now).

Hmm, my pearls could do with an outing, though...

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 15:49

I didn’t know it was happening but we did an excellent line in this in my teens. Even from the other side of the world to actual sloanes.

Pie crust (turned up)
Rugby ditto
Scarf
Head bands
Brogues
Pearls

thedevilinablackdress · 05/12/2020 15:55

I'm in for the knitwear but that's probably all.

PerkingFaintly · 05/12/2020 15:57

So, Uniqlo white shirts.

Do they accommodate norks? I love a good, crisp white shirt but am very hourglass and most make me look like a barmaid in a Carry On film.

Lucked · 05/12/2020 16:01

Most of my wardrobe is quite preppy anyway so it is not a massive leap although I am too old to carry off twee - I need to add a bit of edge or risk looking like a fuddy duddy.

VanityWitch · 05/12/2020 16:02

I'd also like to know this. I love Uniqlo generally, but haven't had a shirt from there.

I also agree there is a fine line between twee in a fun way and just twee in the style of Dolores Umbridge.
