If you’re around 40, where do you buy your “wow” dresses?

Not that we’re all likely to be going anywhere soon 🙄 But if you were able to buy a dress for a New Years Eve night out (like cocktails and dancing rather than black tie) or a general nice night out, where do you go when ASOS, Topshop etc all start to seem a bit young blah?

Ganni! I like Rixo too but ditsy prints look crap on me. Also great things in & Other Stories, COS etc. But Ganni do amazing dresses (and often on The Outnet with good reductions)

Shortyshortcake · 03/12/2020 23:11

Rixo, Rotate Birger and Ganni.

Phase Eight

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 03/12/2020 23:12

Karen Millen.

White Company, Aspiga, Hobbs (jumpsuits)

I’m early 40s and dresses are very much my wardrobe go to, I love them. So, l tend to wear them on a day to day basis, as well as that special evening out (if l can temember what one of those was like); different styles then of course. That is not to say that l never dorn a skirt, a pair of jeans or leggings, but other trousers are rare indeed.

Los of shops tend to replicate styles (particularly winter weight ones) so my dress choice preference is to mix where they are purchased from. Generally though, aside from a couple of local shops, Oliver Bonus, House of Fraser, Zara, John Lewis, Monsoon, Next, Mint Velvet and the soon to be lost Debenhams. In addition l buy the odd cheapo one from New Look and accessorise them with things from other shops or change the buttons etc.

Thinking about it, I actually got married in an ASOS dress, at 45.

You can find good stuff most places if you try plenty on.

PegasusReturns · 04/12/2020 08:03

Reiss, Rixos, The Kooples. Needle and thread if a special occasion

PARunnerGirl · 04/12/2020 08:47

I have a Rixo dress that I love @LunaNorth! Totally forgot about them.

Such amazing suggestions. Thanks so much everyone!

I'd try Ghost, Monsoon or Phase Eight for evenng/cocktail wear.

CottonSock · 04/12/2020 14:50

Phase 8 and sometimes Hobbs. Karen Millen and coast gone in my town.

Fairyliz · 04/12/2020 17:14

Ebay mainly.
I have been on several cruises in the last few years and these sort of clothes are the things you can get really cheaply second hand on eBay as people don’t wear them very often.
Think £15 for a dress that would have cost £120 originally.

cjpark · 04/12/2020 18:42

I've got a Vivienne Westwood dress which is a classic, also Reiss, sometimes Baukjen, Me+Em.

MabelMoo23 · 04/12/2020 18:47

Used to be Coast and Karen Millen but they are owned by Boohoo now so defo no go now

Cecilia2016 · 04/12/2020 19:14

Notarealmum · 05/12/2020 07:27

Ebay, for vintage!

JMAngel1 · 05/12/2020 07:31

All Saints
Self Portrait
Zara
Viv Westwood
But agree should have a look on eBay first. I got a gorgeous VW for £35 a couple of years ago.

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2020 07:55

Phase 8 or Coast

Hairydilemma · 05/12/2020 09:22

Agree with Phase Eight, also some of the Designers at Debenhams esp the Jenny Packham range if they still do that.

Also House of Fraser (although try to steer clear now it’s owned by Mike Ashley...)

WingBingo · 05/12/2020 11:42

AllSaints have some fantastic half price dresses at the moment. Really wish i had somewhere to wear them.

professionalnomad · 05/12/2020 17:44

Damsel in a dress for me
I'm an 18. They are one of the brands that don't insist that plus sized women should wear dull shapeless sacks (looking at you Violeta by Mango)
