Do we need to talk about Topshop?

I think it will probably get bought as it’s such an iconic brand but not sure it will be the same. It’s not been so popular for a while now, turns out it wasn’t just me getting old!

What are your memories/best buys? I’ve not been to a shop for at least ten years but in the old days you could get really nice on trend basics, jeans and cardigans and normal length tops. I liked the Martha jeans

I remember finding some lovely things there 20+ years ago, but whenever I’ve popped in over the past decade it’s been full of unwearable polyester crap like everywhere else on the high street Their denim is still OK, but nothing like it used to be.

TheDetectiveBadge · 28/11/2020 15:49

10-12 years ago I used to fit into their size 6 bodycon mini skirts. Sadly those days are long gone!

SionnachRua · 28/11/2020 15:49

The jeans are my go to brand so I'm hoping they make it through! Joni and Jamie jeans, haven't found anything quite like them.

TottiePlantagenet · 28/11/2020 15:58

I'm wondering whether I need to bulk buy their petite jeans - best petite jeans on the High Street I've found. I would definitely mourn that loss.

MrsKingfisher · 28/11/2020 16:02

Awful for those who work in topshop but how Phillip Green treated people during the first lockdown was disgusting I'd like to see him destitute.

nitgel · 28/11/2020 16:06

It's been rubbish for ages way too much polyester it's sad I see to spend £££ in there.

Floisme · 28/11/2020 16:07

I suspect their heyday had more to do with Jane Shepherdson than it had with Philip Green.

Agreed. Sadly I can't see him taking much of a hit from this!
Bemoreme21 · 28/11/2020 16:07

@SionnachRua I love Jamie & Joni. Super flattering and good at hiding my mum tum. I might stock up....

TruffleShuffles · 28/11/2020 16:09

I remember 20 years ago when I first started shopping in Topshop as a 15 year old that I wanted everything! I could probably say that for about 10 years and then I think over the last 10 years they massively lost their way. The prices got much higher and the quality much lower and I now really struggle to pick up anything when I go in there, even the jeans are not what they used to be. You can see that the range has massively reduced as I imagine sales haven’t been great fo a while, I see very few people in there shopping whenever I go in.

I think they got a bit lost on who they were marketing their products for, the clothes are too expensive for the teens and the quality isn’t good enough for the price for the old loyal topshop customers.

MarshaBradyo · 28/11/2020 16:09

I bought a TopShop Unique silk skirt from NaP. Bit different to main stuff (bit more ££) but really nice.

goose1964 · 28/11/2020 16:13

I used to buy from them, but they were never my first choice, I always preferred Chelsea Girl and C&A. Last time I was in there I was looking for clothes with DD and neither of us saw anything we liked at a reasonable price.

excelledyourself · 28/11/2020 16:47

I used to spend so much money in Topshop in my early to mid twenties. I'd find something I liked and buy it in at least two other colours. Loved their shoes and accessories too. But the last thing I bought was a pair of shoes four years ago and they got returned.

The clothes had definitely become too expensive for what they were.

My local shop was tiny and survived much longer than I expected. Think it closed about a year or so ago.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/11/2020 16:51

Used to bunk off alevel classes to go to oxford street, their basement floor had some great one of a kind pieces by up and coming designers and they used to have an awesome pick n mix section there too.

Also glad it’s not just me getting old and money savvy, the lines are dated and overpriced.

I will miss the music in the central London store though, it’s like an old skool night at ministry of sound

excelledyourself · 28/11/2020 16:58

I remember going to the Oxford Street one on a weekend to London (from a wee town in Scotland) aged 19, with my boyfriend. My mind was blown. And probably my spending money Grin

excelledyourself · 28/11/2020 17:02

Just realised this means DP's too. I buy clothes for work in there every so often. Always found it reasonably priced.

athousandstrawberrylollys · 28/11/2020 17:09

Agree they've got a bit staid and fussy lately.

I got a green mini-skirt with a silver zip down the front that I wore on my first date. The boyfriend is long gone but I still love the skirt although it's a lot tighter than it used to be

VinylDetective · 28/11/2020 17:13

I love(d) their shoes. I got a wonderful pair of leopard print ankle boots last winter for £14 in the sale.

again2020 · 28/11/2020 17:56

The one in Preston used to be pretty good when I was at uni 17 years ago, I remember buying a white shirt with hearts on that I thought was fab. Topshop knickers were cool and the sign of class aswell 🤣

excelledyourself · 28/11/2020 18:01

Yes! I had a lot of Topshop underwear. Always from there or La Senza.

Zengarden001 · 28/11/2020 19:06

Martha jeans. Great leather bags, some great shoes but sadly all 10-12 years ago. The beauty range that they brought out recently was good but apart from that I haven't bought anything from them.

Rollergirl11 · 28/11/2020 19:53

I will be gutted if someone doesn’t pick up Topshop. I still remember my first ever visit to the Oxford St flagship at the age of 15 and now my 14yr DD loves going there. We made a trip there back in the October half term. I am guaranteed to find something I love on the basement concession floor. The only other branch I find decent though is the one in Liverpool One and won’t bother with any others. DD orders a fair bit from them online.

Sunshiney1981 · 28/11/2020 21:31

Does anyone remember the range they did with Kate Moss about 20 years ago? So cool.
I still have a couple of items, I no longer wear them but I have a feeling they’ll become iconic one day....

excelledyourself · 28/11/2020 21:40

Me. I had a grey t-shirt with a cut out back. Can't remember the design, but it had diamantés on it that irritated the inside of my upper arms. I definitely bought it late 2006 at the very earliest.

I lost that t-shirt. Has always baffled me how Confused

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/11/2020 21:49

It’s been overpriced tat for years. I buy reiss, all saints. Never even look at the websites if I need something.
