Do we need to talk about Topshop?

I think it will probably get bought as it’s such an iconic brand but not sure it will be the same. It’s not been so popular for a while now, turns out it wasn’t just me getting old!

What are your memories/best buys? I’ve not been to a shop for at least ten years but in the old days you could get really nice on trend basics, jeans and cardigans and normal length tops. I liked the Martha jeans

These days I don't think it's any better than the other shops that sell cheaply made polyester shite.

It's more expensive than said other shops so loses out on that front and also loses out on the back of some people steering away from buying mass produced cheap stuff in favour of more expensive, well made items.

The brand of late has been a poor imitation of what it once was and I felt living on past glory. I miss the design, innovative fabrics and the cutting edge approach of the past, but this is something not just an issue with Top Shop but so, so many other brands. Warehouse was brilliant when it first started and I spent far too much in their shops, Next had wonderful tailoring. I spent more money, on less and was happy to do so. I feel for those losing their jobs.

I loved TopShop in the 1990s and early 2000s. Had the most amazing orange mini skirt and lived in their strappy cotton vests and black bootleg trousers. (Was wearing exactly that when I met DH). Also had a lovely navy dress with a flower down the side and a split up the leg, it was beautiful. Oh, and a beaded long black dress for a ball at university. I loved those clothes.

@evilharpy OMG the communal changing rooms. Scarring for chubby teenage me. I remember struggling into a pair of those trousers with a skirt over the top - they were a bit tight, but I bought them anyway.

Loved going in as a teen and spending my birthday money in there! Haven’t shopped in there myself for years, since just after I had my first 2 dc and my body shape changed, just struggled to work out what suited me and my local store was small and stocked mainly the ‘fashion trends’ more than the basics so I just gave up on them.

A bit off topic - but are the shops still open. If I order on the website will my cash disappear into the ether?

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/12/2020 11:36

Aww loved Topshop back in the day. Popped in for the first time in ages at the start of the year when killing time waiting for a train. Got a total impulse buy pair of ankle boots which I love and wear loads.

PattyPan · 07/12/2020 11:54

I never really shopped there - too expensive when I was a teenager/student (so past 10-15ish years) and not good enough quality now I’m able to afford more than primark/H&M. I think when I was at school it was trendier to shop at Zara than Topshop!

HelpMeh · 07/12/2020 12:00

I always felt like it was a shop I was supposed to love but nearly always came out empty handed. I won't miss it.

@TottiePlantagenet

I'm wondering whether I need to bulk buy their petite jeans - best petite jeans on the High Street I've found. I would definitely mourn that loss.
Omg me too, the petite section is perfect for me! I really don't want them to go :(
