Need new black ankle boots - Chelsea? Biker? Hiker? Combat? How to decide?

Please help me decide on a new pair of winter boots

Must be flat as they are replacing my summer time converse for my go to school run shoe

I love all the styles so I’m struggling to pick

I will mostly be wearing them with skinny blue jeans or skinny black jeans

Do you usually dress smart or casually? If smart I would say Chelsea if casual I would go for hiker. I’ve just bought some toasty warm emu boots - love them!

waltzingparrot · 18/11/2020 15:49

I don't think you can go wrong with Chelsea boots. Think you can with Biker ones though.

Onedropbeat · 18/11/2020 16:55

I like to think I dress smartly but when I look at myself I’m probably quite a mess

I aspire to be smart though.

With a little bit of alternative thrown in

These are some that I like the look of. But they are all so different!

The Allsaints ones
The biker type generally goes best with skinny jeans. Other styles of boot will look a bit dated unless with a looser cut jean or skirts.
Western boots are really nice but if you're going for 1 pair, I'd still say the biker ones.

DarlingCoffee · 18/11/2020 18:05

I agree - the all saint ones are the nicest and would also work with long dresses if you did want to be a bit smarter

Ellapaella · 18/11/2020 21:44

Love the AllSaints boots OP. I think the hiker style is a good choice right now.

goldielockdown2 · 18/11/2020 22:01

Just realised I was typing biker! Hiker*

All Saints by a mile

malificent7 · 19/11/2020 07:05

Doctor martens are great. I just ordered the serena ones with fur inside so they dont rub. The middle ones are nice.

Onedropbeat · 19/11/2020 07:47

The all saints ones are lovely and probably my favourite

They have 30% off already

Not too sure if it’s worth holding out for Black Friday in case they’ll be discounted any more 🤔

I have a lovely pair of Doc Martens. I went for the one’s with the massive heel though so as much as they are comfortable I can’t walk very far in them

I really wanted some biker boots so I spent more money than I would usually & got a really nice grey pair from Dune recently.

Then I decided I really must have some hiker boots too so i went in Primark & got a black pair for £16... hopefully they will last the winter but if not I can get another pair!
Pic shows the Primark boots.

They look good for primark

I like dune

What ones did you go for?

I’ve literally just ordered some of the Grenson Nanette hiker boots for my upcoming birthday. Was considering waiting to see if I could get anything off for Black Friday but managed to use a promo code for 20% off on the Flannels website.

GolfMad54 · 19/11/2020 17:25

Get the tower london. They are so minimalist, modern and sort of goth. The other ones are too fussy abd the metal deraiks are too casual, rough.the plain onea can be dressed up or down. The others look casual 24/7.

Standrewsschool · 19/11/2020 17:42

I like the Clark ones best.

VinylDetective · 19/11/2020 18:25

I really like the All Saints ones, best by a mile.

(There’s an echo in here!)

Annasgirl · 19/11/2020 20:00

Joining in because I am also looking for black boots!! I love the All Saints but wonder should I stretch for the Grensons? Or a pair of Dr. Martens? I want comfort, style, ability to walk the dog. I want them to remain “stylish” for about 3 full Winters! So I can get enough wear for the money. Thanks if anyone has them and can tell me which for comfort and wear and tear.

CaptainWentworth · 19/11/2020 20:08

I got some Grenson Nanettes last winter and they are very comfy- they feel a heck of a lot lighter than they look, too. I like wearing them with longish skirts and dresses (or used to, when I went out of the house!) and they look good with both skinny and wider leg jeans and dungarees. I do feel like I have to be a bit careful what I wear on top- they are fairly casual but being black I do find they have a smarter feel than e.g. my brown blundstone boots which are my very casual choice for wearing with hoodies/ ‘outdoor’ gear.

I’d go ahead and order now, then if they go down even further on BF reductions you can just buy another pair and return the first (providing you have the money to cover both pairs until one can be returned and refunded, of course!)

But I have perpetual FOMO on items that I love...

Rollergirl11 · 19/11/2020 21:06

@CaptainWentworth how do you mean you have to be careful what you wear on top ref the Nanette’s?

CaptainWentworth · 19/11/2020 22:45

@Rollergirl11 oh I just mean I don’t think they look right with certain styles and colours of tops - like I wouldn’t wear them with my Patagonia zip up fleece jumper (too casual); and sometimes I feel like I have to balance out the ‘heaviness’ on my feet somehow with my top half. It think it’s mostly because they are black and I’ve never worn black boots much before (except smart heeled ones with work clothes) so I’m still sort of getting used to them. And I’m generally weirdly fussy about proportions and what things look good together (which are probably a bit dated due to being late 30s) - ignore me!

CaptainWentworth · 19/11/2020 22:50

Like if I wore them with skinny jeans, my jumper would have to be chunkier/ longer than if I had wide leg jeans on. Or if I had lighter jeans, I’d have to wear a darker top as otherwise I’d feel like my feet were the only darker bit and they’d stand out too much. I’m not very good at explaining and like I say it’s probably just my weird brain. They are very good quality boots, you won’t regret them!
