Can I make this supermarket coat look upmarket?

Hi, been on here ages but don't post very often. Seeking opinions on this coat from Asda please and whether to keep or return it.
Now I like Arket clothes and that whole style of dressing. I've been after what I would describe as an urban padded coat to wear round town, as opposed to something rural from Jack Wolfskin or the like. Have to say here that I don't need any coats or jackets at all as I have loads of good ones, they are my weakness.
Anyhow, I've been coveting this Arket coat in beige, it's just what I was looking for. Can't really justify or afford to spend £225 when I have so many coats already. I popped into Asda today for some milk and came out with this khaki padded coat which looks very similar to the Arket one (in my opinion). It's well made, long, thick and warm and has nice details like the side poppers. I sized up to get the oversized look and I think it's a very good copy of the Arket one. Just what I wanted, I'm thrilled! So am I deluding myself or does it look like what it is, a £40 Asda coat? Looks far better in the flesh than in the photos by the way. I plan to style it similar to the Arket photo, with chunky boots and good trousers.

I can't upload photos, sorry don't know why. Seems not to be working.

That’s a good find. The only plus I can see on the Arket one for me is the extra four or so inches in length but that might be fixed by you sizing up for the oversized look (👍🏻). I like the side poppers and diagonal stitching on the Asda coat as features. I don’t like the styling in the Asda website but as you pointed out you wouldn’t wear it like that.

If you are going to spend £200 plus pounds on a winter jacket I think you’ll find you want this one anyway 😉 www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/coats-and-jackets/product.3-in-1-hybrid-puffer-jacket-beige.0916515004.html 😍

I prefer the Asda one, but it isn't as long as the Arket. But I think it's too long tbh. Go for the Asda! Grin

gretagreengrapes · 17/11/2020 18:56

The look is similar. I once bought a parka coat from Tesco, looked great but it didn't keep me warm at all, depends what the filling is like and if that's important to you.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 17/11/2020 18:57

I like the Asda one - the triangle design is a bit different, and I'd never guess it was 'cheap' (not that I'd ever look at someone's coat and think that)

Looks like you've got a bargain.

BestestBrownies · 17/11/2020 18:58

Your Arket link just goes to the home page, so can’t compare it, but the Asda coat is a great find! I think the diamond quilting helps to lift it a level or two in the style stakes.

Shame it doesn’t come in a proper khaki (ie army green), rather than the beige, or I’d get one myself

Flew · 17/11/2020 19:00

Thinkle

That coat is very bizarre! It looks like the bottom comes off? Does it come off? 🤔 Crazy shoes too! Or maybe I'm just not up to date with fashion.

BestestBrownies · 17/11/2020 19:01

Hmmm.... Arket link worked suddenly. Not keen at all on that one, sorry. Asda one is way more stylish. Win!

3JsMa · 17/11/2020 19:03

I just Googled some beige puffer coats and there are loads of similar to Arket but for less. Not sure if you need hood or not.

BestestBrownies · 17/11/2020 19:04

@Thinkle that one is hideous! Would be seriously unflattering (cut and colour), on about 95% of women. Guaranteed to be in the bargain bin come January methinks...

Thinkle · 17/11/2020 19:05

@Flew it does indeed come off. I love it but I’m a fan of bizarre (but not a fan of the boots)

Thinkle · 17/11/2020 19:08

@BestestBrownies I own it in black and love it 🙈. At least I won’t see everyone else wearing it.

Should I leave the style and beauty board in shame now? 🤣

JoJoSM2 · 17/11/2020 19:09

Asda clothes aren’t ever going to look upmarket. To look upmarket, you need good fabrics and tailoring. Personally, it wouldn’t take me more than a few seconds to see if someone is wearing a cheap high street or an upmarket item.

Having said that, it’s quite a nice design so why not.

SayakaMurata · 17/11/2020 19:12

I like both but think the Arket one is much nicer.

I would also worry about how warm a £40 coat would be. It seems too cheap to me.

Happy to be proved wrong though!

Hayeahnobut · 17/11/2020 19:13

I think what JoJo really means is that she likes it but wants to make a (not so) smart dig.

BestestBrownies · 17/11/2020 19:20

Aaaargh! Sorry @Thinkle!

You are obviously in the 5% (tall, slim and trendy enough), to carry it off Wink

Wafty · 17/11/2020 20:35

Thanks for all the replies!
Yes, I bought the next size up, so it's oversized and down to my lower calf, pretty much like the Arket photo styling. It's a heavy coat, not a down filled one and it's exceptionally warm. Would have preferred khaki green but you can't have everything for £40 I s'pose. The quality is not bad at all, well finished and the silver poppers are a nice touch. I'm gonna keep it, hopefully be able to style it up a bit and if not it will be my work coat for next year!
Thinkle don't think I could pull off that Cos hybrid coat Grin Grin

@Hayeahnobut

Aren’t you analytical. I just think that supermarket clothes look cheap. Simple as.

Thinkle · 18/11/2020 08:36

@BestestBrownies Sadly I’m not in that 5%. I’m in the 3% of forty somethings that live in denial about their age and style... 🤣

ShivD · 18/11/2020 15:35

I think the Arket one is about a million times nicer, sorry! I almost bought it in black.

ZaZathecat · 18/11/2020 16:47

I also like the ASDA one better - really nice.

To answer your question though, how to make a supermarket coat look upmarket: always have a pissed-off look on your face - see COS website for reference.

dkdkfhfkdsl · 18/11/2020 17:00

That Arket coat is one of the ugliest pieces of clothing I've ever seen! Awful colour, awful length, no style.

Elouera · 18/11/2020 17:01

Without seeing up close and quality of stitching etc, I prefer the asda one. The arket one looks like a shapeless sleeping bag!!! As long as its warm enough, then you bagged a bargain.

merryhouse · 18/11/2020 17:34

No idea about quality, warmth and so forth but for an immediate glance the Asda one is much better. The Arket is a weird shape.

(Disclaimer - I am 51)
