Does anyone use box dyes anymore?

I really want my hair done/coloured but now we've got lockdown and I had just had a baby before that.

My friend used to do my hair in my early 20's and she'd bleach it then dye and I remember liking it.

But now I'm older I think, are they really awful! Will I massively regret it?

I use a box dye. I’m just keeping my mousey brown hair more of a warm chestnut colour, so not a dramatic change. How long is your hair, and what colour are you going from/to?

cactusdog · 13/11/2020 13:44

Thanks for the reply.
My hair is shoulder length and very fine/thin.

It's also a mousey brown/blonde. I used to always have blonde highlights, or when dyed I was white/ash blonde.

I'd love to go white/ash blonde again..

Me. I've only ever dyed my own hair. Never had a problem/bad colour. Even my hairdresser compliments me on it!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 13/11/2020 13:46

I do, but go as close to my natural colour as possible to hide the greys and give a bit of shine.
Going down the bleach then colour route is not something I'd want to do at home personally. Seen too many hait disasters.

zenasfuck · 13/11/2020 13:47

I use a box semi permanent over my mousey hair to cover the greys and add a bit of pigment

Costacoffeeplease · 13/11/2020 13:50

I use a box dye, always have and never had any probs

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 13/11/2020 14:01

I've always used a box dye, only went wrong once but it was my own fault because i bought a stupid colourm have changed colours loads of times with box dyes! Currently blonde (a bit lighter than my natural blonde) and use silver shampoo, always looks fairly natural and not a block colour

cactusdog · 13/11/2020 14:02

So what would you think of this one?

Does anyone use box dyes anymore?

I am box dying this weekend normally I would only go darker but this time going lighter. Will see how it goes and dye it brown if it's a disaster!

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/11/2020 14:06

Yes loads of people use the. But I'm really not sure in them for going very blond from a darker colour. I've bleached my hair and dyed it pink. So I'm a terrible example! But I'm not sure I could have hot a nice blonde tone if you see what I mean? Bit I could get a basic light colour for the pink.

I'd recommend getting a home highlighting kit or toner to tide you over until yiu can get to the hairdresser.

MedusasBadHairDay · 13/11/2020 14:07

I've always dyed my own hair, only once had it go wrong (hint: going from bright blue to bright red within a few days is achievable but requires more bleaching than hair can cope with)

If you aren't confident than I'd say start off with subtle changes, rather than leaping into bleaching.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 13/11/2020 14:18

Depends what colour you are at the moment OP, it's a toner so will only make a difference if you're already pretty blonde as it'll take the brassy tones out more than anything I think

dottiedodah · 13/11/2020 16:01

I colour my own hair ,never had any problems .I dont think using bleach is a very good idea though. My friend had her her go green! Just get a Box dye a similar sort of shade .(Will tell you on the back of the box what colour will turn out ) depending on your hair colour.

foodtoorder · 13/11/2020 16:04

I use the John freida dyes. Always stick to natural blonde either light or medium depending on the time of year.
It is one of the pricer ones but def worth it, sometimes 2for £10 in boots or Superdrug

chocolatespiders · 13/11/2020 16:16

I wonder this as i gaze at them but have never used. I have dark brown hair and would like a semi perm plum if feeling brave. I just looked one up and the reviews were bad so decided against it.

SnuggyBuggy · 13/11/2020 16:16

I use them to cover my grey but I wouldn't dare attempt a drastic colour change myself personally. I'd probably mess it up horribly

onyourway · 13/11/2020 16:35

I only use a semi permanent in case it's a disaster

foodtoorder · 13/11/2020 19:49

Buy the best you can afford, follow the instructions and you will be fine.
Honestly can't recommend the John Frieda enough

ScatteredMama82 · 13/11/2020 20:20

I’d be wary of bleaching/lightning at home. It’s really hard to get it even. I’ve only done it as a pre-lightener that I then dye over (I dyed my hair too dark and didn’t like it).

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 13/11/2020 20:48

I use one on my mousey hair (Superdrug or Clairol Medium blonde) and have done for about 3 years. I'm very happy with how it looks and how it covers the grey. It only lightens it by about 3 shades though. I would be wary of bleaching at home.

CloudyVanilla · 13/11/2020 20:53

I bleached my hair platinum at home :) I used the Schwarzkopf bleach and it is killer during application but results were amazing. The key is you have to really get plenty of bleach as you need to be able to slather your hair in it.

I did take a while to figure out toning and dying as we don't have many great products for that in the UK drugstores yet. I found success with the Bleach London conditioners for toning and loved the colour, it was beautiful. I went back brown as an impulse because I was worried about damage but I'm doing it again this weekend as it was very pretty :)

Bananaman123 · 13/11/2020 20:53

Love the john frieda foam dyes and use all the time

cactusdog · 13/11/2020 21:28

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I'll give the home bleaching a miss then but go with a John Frida a few shades lighter

CrazyToast · 13/11/2020 22:13

I've always box dyed and always will.

If you are bleaching go for Live platinum.

cactusdog · 21/11/2020 12:49

Guys it went so wrong 😭😭
I tried a John freida foam, 1/2 shades lighter than mine and I am completely ginger I am so sad.
