How often do you wash your hair?

Just that, really. I'm a once-a-week person when I don't exercise. I have long hair and brush it multiple times a day. Also we are a non-smoking household and we tend to eat healthily so no smell of frying in the house. I get it that your scalp can smell but anyone I told I can go a week without washing my hair was surprised because it's always shiny and doesn't smell or look greasy (I have dry hair and skin so that may help).

I know some people have to wash their hair daily but that's usually (not always) because they have oily scalps. So I'm curious. How often do you wash your hair?

@Standrewsschool

Every other day. Occasionally leave it to three days, but that’s pushing it, and usually then only if I’m not going out.

Greasy-normal mid-length hair.

I never use dry shampoo. Can’t quite understand how adding something to your hair makes it look cleaner.

Incidently, does anyone wash their hair twice at one sitting? Growing up, all shampoo bottles used to advise this. I guess people wash their hair more frequently now, or people use conditioners more (never used conditioners growing up). I think the theory was the first wash was to clean your hair, and the second to maintain it?

Because the powders absorb the oils making it look less stuck together

Twice a week usually, sometimes 3.

I have curly thick hair which never gets greasy and in fact gets very frizzy if I wash it too much.
Am toying with trying co-washing.

Just waiting for more of the ‘how can you feel clean?!’ comments from people that wash their hair every day.

Once every couple months just to get rid of any product buildup
I follow the curly girl method , I rarely wash it , my co worker was obsessed often wanting to smell it and couldn’t understand why it didn’t smell of anything , not even dirt , she said it just smelled of hair ?
When I do wash it , it gets extremely itchy and a flaky scalp , I use sulphate free products , no ‘cones, xanes etc
I ‘ wash it ‘ with conditioner once a week maybe a bit less

It looks after itself mainly

Every day for me or every other day if I use dry shampoo.

Very fine hair but lots of it. Gets weighed down by oil/grease easily.
I dry shampoo the night before I would actually need to use it. Seems to work better at absorbing oil and looks better.

I have fine long hair, I have to wash my hair every other day or it looks greasy & therefore smells unwashed even with dry shampoo.

So annoying as I know women with thick hair who can wash their hair much less often.

Terralee · 06/11/2020 11:30

On the plus side it literally takes 5 mins to dry.

@BinkyandBunty I’m really interested to know more about co-washing! Thanks for the tip.

I am 60 and have layered just off shoulder length hair. Every three days. It is fine but there is a lot of it; not straight/Not wavy. A blow dry takes me no more than 6/7 minutes. Day 2 and 3 I use the hot brush. By day 4 it's a bit greasy - even at my age.

In my 20s/30s when long three days but day three I tied it back (actually it was tied back a lot) lots of silk scarves in a bow, and big tortoise shell or velvet hair slides involved - when the slide went close to the nape of the neck. When it was shorter, shorter than now, every day because it needed a blow dry every day which was a pain in the arse.

Oh and I recall travelling across L9ndon every day and when you washed your hair into a white basin or over the bath, the water was the colour of London dirt!

Pipandmum · 06/11/2020 21:31

Every second or third day. I have thick wavy hair and if I can get away with it I do. My daughter does hers once a week.

I wash mine every evening (except for when I'm not going out anywhere the next day). I don't buy into all this stuff that it's bad to wash it every day and that you should train your hair into going longer between washes. Everyone's hair is different. My scalp gets disgustingly greasy if it's left for 48 hours. I suspect it's hormonal in my case.

Incidently, does anyone wash their hair twice at one sitting?

Yes. I always thought that was a marketing scam to sell more shampoo, but I tried it and it works really well on my hair. It lathers up a lot more on the second shampoo and gets my (very thick) hair much cleaner.
