Where to buy warm winter coat for a teen boy?

Really struggling to find what I'm looking for online for 13-year-old DS. He needs a new winter coat and not one that's 'lightweight', cord, denim, etc, that's weather-proof and appropriate for cold, winter days.

This is the kind of thing I'm looking for, but I can't find anything similar in his size. He's tall for his age, so needs age 14-15. He's had this coat from Lands End before and it was perfect with a nice, snuggly lining, but it only goes up to age 12-13. Anyone?

TK Maxx? There's usually something in there my teen boy will tolerate. The website is pretty good.

Endlesscoathunt · 22/10/2020 14:30

Any good?

Looks like 14-15 available in the black.

formerbabe · 22/10/2020 14:33

I'd probably look in men's departments of shops rather than kids/teens. My ds is 12 and very tall, I get him things from the men's departments in xs or s.

CMOTDibbler · 22/10/2020 14:39

My ds is tall, and his last years coat, bought when he was 13 is this in a mans small, and still fits him this year when he is 6'2. I bought it in an out of town outlet place and got another 20% off as well

pinkbalconyrailing · 22/10/2020 14:39

decathlon or other outdoor store hiking department.
at that age I insist that the coat has reflective bits.
a 3in one coat is great in uk winters when temperatures can be up and down from day to day.

BlueCowWonders · 22/10/2020 14:45

Are you sure he actually needs a coat? Most teens seem to avoid them, just wearing a hoodie etc
Outdoor shops are probably best - mountains warehouse always have a sale on

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/10/2020 14:49

H&m have some good ones, Next is usually pretty good too.

olderthanilookapparently · 22/10/2020 14:51

I find TX Maxx good for my 13 year old (who is now the size of a medium man)

ivftake1 · 22/10/2020 14:51

UNIQLO!

NameChange2PostThis · 22/10/2020 14:53

Mountain warehouse
Uniqlo
Hollister

PETRONELLAS · 22/10/2020 14:57

I asked this recently on here!
Mountain Warehouse was great. I went for medium in adult size so it could fit over a blazer. Good quality.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 22/10/2020 16:31

This is where they start to overlap into men's sizes so look at the size guide for something that fits him now and compare that to men's sizes to get a match.

Age 14 is the void of clothing due to being on the cusp of men's sizes, Ds2 is 14 and in Primark jeans 30/32 and a men's winter jacket from Regatta as we needed a waterproof for school and he ended up in a size small.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/10/2020 16:33

The difficulty is with teen sizes versus men's sizes is that a child might be man sized but not necessarily man shaped. It can take a lot of trial and error.

zafferana · 22/10/2020 16:50

Thank you so much for all these recommendations - I'll take a good look through them all.

And yes, he does need a coat. He walks to school, plays sports and spends time standing around on touchlines, plus he's quite skinny and he gets cold. Definitely not man-sized yet, although an XS or S might be okay. He's 5'5", but only 52kg.

I think Boden kids jackets go up to age 16 too.

PracticingPerson · 22/10/2020 20:03

I go to mountain warehouse or Jack wolfskin or Millet's and usually get a 3 in 1 waterproof with a zip in/out inner, so it can be either warm, waterproof or both.

ichifanny · 22/10/2020 20:12

I got my 15 year old son one from next last year it’s really similar to my husbands fjallraven one and has Sherpa lining and a hood and is waterproof

RedskyAtnight · 22/10/2020 20:16

I'll also ask the "are you sure he wants a coat" question? You thinking he needs a coat is entirely different to him wanting to wear one.

My teen is currently walking to shirt sleeves. He would rather be cold than wear a coat.

(Still annoyed about the coat I bought him and he never wore).

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 22/10/2020 20:18

My 13 year old wears men's coats, hoodies and T shirts but trousers from teen ranges. Coats and everything on the top half can be bigger - they don't need to fot on the waist like trousers. He's 5 ft 7 atm but there are plenty of 5 ft 5 men - your 13 year old could almost certainly wear a men's small coat.

We ended up getting this winter's coat on Amazon:

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 22/10/2020 20:21

Mine wears a coat, but we're not in the UK. Teens not wearing coats isn't a global phenomenon, its limited to countries with school uniform...

Lemonsole · 22/10/2020 20:49

Super dry.

Grapesoda7 · 22/10/2020 20:53

I usually get mine a winter coat from Foot Asylum or JD.

Pikachubaby · 22/10/2020 20:56

Hollister coats are amazing, there is often a discount (proper 30 or 40% off)

Bought my teen boys coats there lastly year (soft Sherpa/teddy lined, waterproof, hooded, machine washable, sturdy, warm, not too cool not too dorky Grin)

ISeeTheLight · 22/10/2020 21:04

Have a look at Regatta, Berghaus, Colombia, Craghoppers etc. They usually do those styles.
