Where to buy warm winter coat for a teen boy?

Really struggling to find what I'm looking for online for 13-year-old DS. He needs a new winter coat and not one that's 'lightweight', cord, denim, etc, that's weather-proof and appropriate for cold, winter days.

This is the kind of thing I'm looking for, but I can't find anything similar in his size. He's tall for his age, so needs age 14-15. He's had this coat from Lands End before and it was perfect with a nice, snuggly lining, but it only goes up to age 12-13. Anyone?

Place marking for ideas!

Wow the Hollister coats look lovely!

I'll also ask the "are you sure he wants a coat" question? You thinking he needs a coat is entirely different to him wanting to wear one.

I get what you're saying, but last week he wore his old coat, which is too small, so yes he does need a new coat!

Trespass Tuff jacket is good for this but can only find up to 13

As he needs 14/15 have you looked at small or xsmall mans ? DS is 15 soon and is average but now is out of child sizes

M+M

Superdry eBay Store?

I like Zara for teen coats. They come up nice and small and the quality is good.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 23/10/2020 15:37

At that age, I’d ask him where he will wear a coat from. My son wouldn’t have worn a Next or Trespass coat. Hollister and Superdrug are acceptable here. As well as Nike, North Face etc, not sure what your budget is.

I just bought my 11 year old DS one from the Nike store. It's warm but not heavy, shower proof and has a decent good. I would have preferred something properly waterproof but this was the best I could convince him into!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/10/2020 15:47

Definately ask him what brand he'd prefer and equally won't entertain.
My DS (20) doesn't bother with labels but he won't ever wear a padded coat . He's bone thin and tall .

Got him a black Trespass waterproof , mesh lined (but they do fleece lined ones) enough zipped pokets to keep his phone /travel card/wallet safe including a hidden iner pocket .
Smart enough if he has to look cared for .

It was £60ish 2 years ago but still looks good

Mine is the same age and loves the Next Performance jackets - he's had them in various colours since he was about 9. They tend not to appear on the website until after half term though. They're very warm, properly waterproof and just a fairly plain parka style without logos (which he hates). They're so toasty that I'm having his current one as soon as he gets a new one!

I think popular brands are different in different areas and also obviously DC themselves are different. My DSs about age 12/13 loved Superdry but it's not the done label around here nowadays - 8 years later.

However, after that phase they really would rather something unbranded rather than sports or designer branded. It's sometimes better to have no label rather than the "wrong" one. But, as I say, areas and DC differ immensely and they also change their views a lot at about that age where they may want to fit in, stand out or be completely invisible.

Popular "brands" round my way ar pretty much The North Face, Nike, Adidas etc.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/10/2020 15:57

Mine would definitely prefer H&M, Next, Zara or general outdoor shop shop labels

Coconut2010 · 23/10/2020 16:18

Sadly my teenage son would rather freeze to death and be soaking wet than having to wear a coat which is not from the right brand, ie Moncler, Canada Goose and co...
I stopped buying him clothes when I realised I was wasting my money as he would not wear them due to them being deemed as uncool or out of fashion. Even Hollister is out of fashion now apparently!
However there is no way I am spending £1000 on a coat for a teenager (I’m not even spending that for myself!), that’s a principle so if he really want it I told him I would contribute (to a minority) and he will have to fund the rest himself!

Coconut2010 · 23/10/2020 16:21

I forgot to add that his older brother (who could not care less about brands) had a couple of nice coats from Jack Wills. Unfortunately there is no way his younger brother will accept to wear it

RunBackwards · 23/10/2020 16:42

By 14 you probably need to be looking in men's departments but TBH, apart from a good waterproof for "proper" outdoor hiking etc my 17 & 19yo haven't owned , worn or wanted proper coats since they were 12/13. Will he wear it?

My boys seem to just wear jeans and hoodies whatever the weather. Steaming hot in summer? The hoody is still on. Snow on the ground ? The hoody is apparently sufficient.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/10/2020 18:49

Mine won't wear hoodies. DS2 (19) wears either a leather jacket or his big cosy parka, partial to a jersey as well. DS1 (20) wears shorts and t-shirt all year round. If we are going out to dinner he will put on jeans and a shirt, but even if it's snowing, he generally just wears shorts and t-shirt. If it's actually wet falling from the sky, he'll put on a shell rain jacket for the minimum time he can get away with. He does run really hot though.
