I enjoyed the Sophie scone video, thanks for posting!

SenecaFallsRedux · 14/11/2020 12:25

Good article about the clothes in The Crown. "Alarming shoulder pads" indeed. Just about sums up the whole decade from a sartorial standpoint.

Love Sophie's scone video.

latedecember1963 · 14/11/2020 13:36

I wonder who got to woofle the scones. Perhaps James has hit that permanently hungry stage where he's impossible to fill up and he was lurking in the background waiting to pounce!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 14/11/2020 17:22

More than likely latedecember teenagers can hoover out a fridge/cupboard in minutes.

Sophie is making me think of a young Mary Berry.
I'd love those two & Kate to do a one off cookery show. I'd also have Nadiya Hussain with them.
It could be be a thing on Children in Need next year or something.

Loving Max in the bright yellow/mustard colour.

AppleKatie · 14/11/2020 19:02

Great image of James in the background waiting to hoover up the scones.

I suspect the household staff got a fair few. I can’t imagine Sophie eats many scones herself.

paradyning · 14/11/2020 20:24

That's such a great cut on Max's top - love it. I really cannot see anyone but her pulling that outfit off.

paradyning · 14/11/2020 22:26

@SenecaFallsRedux is it correct that if Phil the Greek had retained his Prince Philip, Prince of Greece and Denmark title at his marriage rather than giving up his Greek title and being 'just' a naturalised UK subject at his marriage he would have been King Philip?
I've just read it in this blog and it wasn't how I understood it. I thought you would know!

royalanalysis.com/2020/10/29/lets-talk-about-titles/

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 14/11/2020 22:39

No he still wouldn't have been styled as King if he had kept his Greek & Danish titles & not become a naturalised British citizen.

Albert was Prince Albert of Saxe--Coburg-Gotha when he married Queen Victoria but was not titled as King or King Consort.
Victoria wanted him to be called King Consort but the Prime Minister & his cabinet said it wasn't possible due to the law of male primogeniture.

@SenecaFallsRedux can probably be explain it better or correct me if I am wrong.

Maireas · 14/11/2020 23:18

Prince Philip is the Prince Consort, not a King (monarch in his own right). Nothing to do with previous titles.

OP posts:
JaJaDingDong · 15/11/2020 00:01

That's not right. Prince Philip is Prince because he is a prince in his own right.

SenecaFallsRedux · 15/11/2020 00:46

is it correct that if Phil the Greek had retained his Prince Philip, Prince of Greece and Denmark title at his marriage rather than giving up his Greek title and being 'just' a naturalised UK subject at his marriage he would have been King Philip?

Philip’s status as a prince before his marriage is really immaterial to the title he has as the Queen’s husband. That is up to the Queen. He is a prince in his own right because she made him a prince of the United Kingdom. That (and his dukedom) is his title.

It is highly unlikely that he would have been given the title of King in any circumstances, prince or not. Prince Albert was a prince, but not King Consort. The husband of Queen Anne was a prince of Denmark, but not King Consort.

There is some precedent in Britain for the husband of a queen regnant to be given the title of king. Philip of Spain, the husband of Mary I of England was named co-ruler when they married and called King of England. He spent most of his time in Spain, though, and never really functioned as a ruler in England. And his title did not survive Mary, who was succeeded by her sister Elizabeth.

Henry, Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary Queen of Scots, was made King Consort of Scotland.

Philip of Spain and William of Orange were co-rulers, but William's title survived his wife's death, unlike Philip's case. Mary II had a superior claim to the throne as the daughter of James II and VII (William was the son of James’s sister), and William's secondary position in the succession was recognized in the settlement which provided that if Mary died first and William remarried, any potential children with a second wife would be after Queen Mary’s sister, Anne, in the succession, thus making her, after Mary's death, the only female Heir Apparent in British history.

One of the reasons for husbands of queens regnant generally not being called King is the historical notion that King is a higher title than Queen. In many European countries where the Salic law prevailed, only men could inherit the throne and so queens in their own right were very rare. And even in countries that allowed women to reign, men took precedence in the succession until very recently (and still do in some).

It's certainly possible with more egalitarian rules about succession, the notion that King is a higher title can change and male consorts can be called King. With more queens regnant on the horizon all over Europe (Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain) and a move to have more equality between the sexes in these matters, we might see the King Consort title revived for the husbands of Queens.

Princess Mary was giving a speech at the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Children, Youth and Grief Network. She talked about learning to live with the loneliness of loss and grief, and understandably got quite emotional, having unexpectedly lost her mum when she (Mary) was just 25 years old. She hasn’t talked about it a great deal in public, really, so I think it hit her hard. She posted about it on Instagram afterwards, as well.

I love her outfit. I love the bag! And the shoes...That green is one of my favourite colours.

Just to clarify the "prince in his own right" business, Philip gave up his birth title of Prince of Greece and Denmark. He was made an HRH Duke on his marriage, but for some reason, George VI left out the prince part. The Queen made him a prince of the UK, which means he is a prince in his own right (as opposed to by marriage, which would be unusual for a man). Technically, the Queen can make pretty much anyone prince or princess of the UK in their own right. I think that if Diana had lived, upon William's accession, he would likely have made her a princess of the UK in her own right and an HRH.

mathanxiety · 15/11/2020 04:13

Remembrance Day isn't really a thing in the US in November. November 11th is Veterans Day in the US, when living veterans are honoured.

The ultimate sacrifice of so many Americans in so many wars is remembered on Memorial Day, in early May.

Poppies aren't really a thing either. WW1 has been completely eclipsed in the US.

The recent photos of Harry and Meghan would have been for UK consumption.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 15/11/2020 04:16

Thank you Seneca I knew you would give us a clear & concise explanation.

I like Mary's green too HollyandIvy

paradyning · 15/11/2020 06:56

Yes thank you all and @SenecaFallsRedux. That's what I thought. The blog author sounded so confident she had me doubting myself!

MotherofPearl · 15/11/2020 07:38

I am always blown away by your detailed knowledge of these things @SenecaFallsRedux. I don't know how you remember it all! Really interesting to read about the history of the titles.

Eaumyword · 15/11/2020 08:13

Love that green suit on Mary. I really like that forest green colour.
Interesting to learn about the technicalities behind titles.
Also interesting to hear about how the US honour those who've served their country differently to us on two separate days.
If H&M recent photos were for the UK market, I wonder if they know they continue to have such a polarising effect here and criticism for how staged it appeared to be?

Maireas · 15/11/2020 08:51

Mary's shoes. Ouch. Lovely suit, though. Do we think lipstick sales have plummeted because of mask wearing?

OP posts:
Eaumyword · 15/11/2020 09:12

I bet it has @Maireas! Higher sales on eyeshadow and plummeting lip colours!Smile

Maireas · 15/11/2020 09:39

True!

OP posts:
MotherofPearl · 15/11/2020 10:06

As a lover of lipstick I'm finding mask wearing a real downer. Obviously I comply and wear my mask whenever and wherever required, but I miss wearing red lipstick, which is either hidden or potentially getting smeared or smudged under the mask, so I've given up. I have never really got to grips with doing decent eye makeup, beyond eyeliner and mascara, so maybe I need to learn.

banivani · 15/11/2020 10:11

Not to be that person, but I’m feeling oddly overly defensive when PP:s admire Max (and QE!) for monochromatic looks while commenting on them as OTT when poor CPV wears them. 😔

I really like Max’s look and would wear it (not that yellow).

Maireas · 15/11/2020 10:37

Have people been down on CPV? I think the recent posts were about her trouser suits style, rather than the colours? What do you think, banivani?

OP posts:
MadameMiggeldy · 15/11/2020 11:19

Big CPV fan @banivani. Not a fan of the colours sometimes but love her style a good 90% of the time Smile
