Has anyone here had rhinoplasty and do you regret it?

I’ve hated my nose as long as I can remember. It was broken as a teen and on the large side anyway so I’ve always sort of wished it I could change it.

I’m now in a position financially where it’s possible for me to do so if I choose. I’m 37, happily married and don’t feel like I’m coming at it from a place of feeling like I’m doing it for any reason other than for myself, so that I am a bit happier with the way I look for me, not for anyone else.

I have found a surgeon that I’d like to have a consultation with and seriously look into it. I am 90% sure I will go for it but I’m just wondering whether anyone has been in a similar position and ended up with maybe a nicer nose, but still ultimately regretting the decision? For example you don’t feel you look like yourself anymore?

I had it done a couple of years ago and it is the best thing I have ever done. I wasn’t expecting perfection, I just wanted to notice my other features when I looked in the mirror rather than only ever focussing on my nose.

Before I had it done my mum said “what if you regret it?” And I said - “I can’t hate it anymore than I do already” - so I think it depends how likely it is you’ll end up with a “worse” nose iyswim

Now I just have a nose that I never think about or notice and that is the perfect outcome imo

BasinHaircut · 11/10/2020 19:04

Ah thanks @MrsA2017 that’s a nice positive story!

That’s what I would be aiming for. Something non-descript. Also don’t want it to be obvious, I’d like people to think that maybe I’ve got new glasses or a new haircut and that’s why I look different, so it still looked like my nose but better.

I don’t necessarily want a smaller nose, just the obvious break smoothed out and I think the tip could be lifted slightly, possibly the bridge narrowed a bit but I think that it looks wide because of the bump in it rather than actually being too wide.

I think the regret would come if it looked too different though, but my understanding is that a good responsible surgeon would not do that anyway?

Not me, but my sister.

She HATED her nose, all through her teens and early 20s. Saved up and had a nose job. Hardly anyone noticed, but she felt 100% better about how she looked and it gave her loads more confidence. 20 years down the line she definitely doesn't regret it.

MrsA2017 · 11/10/2020 19:42

My experience was that even close family members didn’t realise until I told them I’d had it done - people notice you look slightly different, but can’t figure out why!

Have you considered having non- surgical rhinoplasty? Filler is injected into the nose, it can achieve a lifted tip and a smaller appearance (although technically volume has been added)

I didn’t go down that route because I wanted some cartilage removed from the tip, surgery was the only way to do this - but for you it might be an option, if you haven’t already considered it.

Either way I don’t imagine you’d regret it because it sounds like you have realistic expectations - when people regret it often it seems that they were expecting too much. As in, asking for a bump to be smoothed out / tip lifted is realistic... asking for a nose like xyz celebrity probably isn’t!

Pelagi · 11/10/2020 19:43

Joining with interest - I’m thinking about doing this. Anyone who’s done it, what questions are important to ask at the consultation?

Fionasmammy · 11/10/2020 19:46

I find that 'hook/beak' type of 'boney' noses are more successful than fleshy noses with wide bulbous tips narrowed. The last just ends up looking michael jacksony and pinched as if the person is permanently inhaling deeply.

Mumdiva99 · 11/10/2020 19:51

Do any of you watch Botched? The surgeons on there will give you loads of tips of what to ask, what to research, what can go wrong and what you can realistically expect. Good luck with it all. (I wish I'd been brave enough to have mine done).

FuckKnowsMate · 11/10/2020 19:53

Following with interest too! I have a consultation on Wednesday with a plastic surgeon, already had a zoom consultation with him.
At this one, they do 3D imaging to give an idea of what they could do to the nose and what the results would look like.

batteriesgoing · 11/10/2020 20:01

You need to research surgeons like crazy. Join all the plastic surgery Facebook groups including the botched groups. It's on your face so there will be no hiding if it goes wrong

MrsA2017 · 11/10/2020 20:05

@Fionasmammy I disagree! I think this is what happens when an unrealistic result has been attempted.

Perhaps you only notice the bad ones...

I had my “bulbous” tip thinned and I wouldn’t say I look much like MJ or like I’m permanently inhaling deeply.

Has anyone here had rhinoplasty and do you regret it?
MrsA2017 · 11/10/2020 20:08

Also in my opinion the good surgeons all charge for the consultation - I would be inclined to avoid that don’t.

BasinHaircut · 11/10/2020 20:15

@MrsA2017 I don’t think the fillers would work because of the bump, but I guess that’s a good question for the surgeon when I have a consultation.

@Fionasmammy I certainly wouldn’t end up with the pinched, permanently inhaling nose as there is just too much of it for that Grin

The consultant I have found seems to be very well regarded. Registered with several relevant bodies and a bit of a pioneer in some facial procedures.

BasinHaircut · 11/10/2020 20:19

@FuckKnowsMate ohh let me know how it goes!

Yes I agree that charging for the consultation seems standard practice, you’d pay for one for a private non-cosmetic consultation so why wouldn’t you pay for this? Happy to pay for the expertise. I’m not planning a kitchen!

BasinHaircut · 14/10/2020 15:58

@FuckKnowsMate did you have your face to face consultation?

I’ve taken the plunge and booked one for 2 weeks’ time. Eeeek!

With regards to people not notice if you can do exactly what you said, get a hair cut/change colour. Try a new lipstick or glasses etc so people can’t tell quite what’s different...... I believe celebrities do this quite often

That's a really really lovely result. I do think it's more difficult to carve that type of nose, takes more skill than just whacking a lumpy bone with a hammer.

I had the lumpy bone type of nose and getting it 'done' was the best thing I ever did in terms of my looks and confidence. I was only 19 but knew I was going to do it from a young teen. Never regretted it for a single moment.

Mangofandangoo · 14/10/2020 16:45

A friend at work had a non surgical nose job and it looks fantastic

IDontMindMarmite · 14/10/2020 16:47

I've considered it for years but have been put off by Jennifer Grey. Nice nose job but she looked like a different person after.

CaptainVanesHair · 14/10/2020 16:49

I had a bump treated with non surgical fillers. I loved it and luckily the double bump I had at the sides near the top are still filled. The slight bump in my nose has come back but I realised I never hated it all along. I’m glad I went that route first rather than changing my nose completely as I now know what the actual issue is were I ever to go the full rhinoplasty route.

Ballstothis148 · 14/10/2020 16:50

Absolutely this! If you don’t want to tell people, change your hair colour and get a cut... an easy distraction :) the other thing is to say you’re having it done due to sinus (insert excuse here) issues. Wish I had the bravery to do this, not scared of the procedure more of the results. Hope all goes well and please keep us updated!

Passthebubbly · 14/10/2020 17:29

Yes I have and absolutely no regrets

MrsA2017 · 14/10/2020 17:32

@Blondiney thank you! I was blessed with a combination that included a very large lumpy bone as well as the bulbous tip!

I had the bone broken and shaved down etc at the same time and like you it is the best thing I have ever done.

The other thing is that noses never stop growing 😨

PhoebeSnow · 14/10/2020 19:59

I had my nose done last month; bump flatted, and nose straightened , it’s still a wee bit bunged up , but not sore, have to be careful when washing face or hair and can’t blow nose just yet. Remember you can’t wear glasses for a while afterwards, just contact lenses, you also need to sleep on your back and upright. I had the same issue with my nose, large bump and crooked as well. Definitely very happy with results. Go for it.

BasinHaircut · 15/10/2020 07:23

Thanks @Blondiney @Passthebubbly and @PhoebeSnow for the positive stories. So good to hear.

I am finding myself (even more than usual) looking at noses on everyone I see on TV to see if anyone has the sort of nose I want to end up with. We’ve been watching ‘The Boys’ on Prime and Becca has the sort of shape I’d like to end up with. I think it’s what my nose would look like with a slightly lifted tip and smoothed our bump.

cabotstove · 15/10/2020 07:43

2 people I know had it done. One looks great but it's essentially the same nose without a bump. The other one I'm not sure, they had it done at 20 so very young & now at 35 it looks too small for their face if that makes sense.
