Has anyone here had rhinoplasty and do you regret it?

I’ve hated my nose as long as I can remember. It was broken as a teen and on the large side anyway so I’ve always sort of wished it I could change it.

I’m now in a position financially where it’s possible for me to do so if I choose. I’m 37, happily married and don’t feel like I’m coming at it from a place of feeling like I’m doing it for any reason other than for myself, so that I am a bit happier with the way I look for me, not for anyone else.

I have found a surgeon that I’d like to have a consultation with and seriously look into it. I am 90% sure I will go for it but I’m just wondering whether anyone has been in a similar position and ended up with maybe a nicer nose, but still ultimately regretting the decision? For example you don’t feel you look like yourself anymore?

@Teenminds they say you only really need two weeks off work for recovery. The splint comes off after a week and then it’s just a case of any bruising and the swelling to go down

ChloeR81 · 20/10/2020 21:25

This is so interesting, I’m seriously considering it too. I’m a single parent and realistically could only get a few days help with the kids...would you be able to look after little kids after a few days? And would you still have 2 black eyes going back to work after 2 weeks? Grin might raise some questions

BasinHaircut · 21/10/2020 14:50

@ChloeR81 from what I’ve read there might/would be some residual bruising after 2 weeks but you would be able to cover it up. I guess everyone is different though.

I’m banking on the fact that I’ll still be working from home when I hopefully have mine done so even if there is anything remaining i could probably get away with keeping my camera off for most meetings (or avoid them!) with one excuse or another for an additional week.

I don’t think if care about work though - the school run would be worse, think of the gossip! Grin

This thread is fascinating, as I’ve always disliked my nose, which is too big. I assumed rhinoplasty was incredibly risky, so am very interested to hear that people have had positive experiences of it. How much does it cost, and how do you find out which surgeons in your area are good?

I read an article about cosmetic surgery that said someone who’d had her chin reshaped found it hurt whenever it rained. Has anyone found that after rhinoplasty?

NCforthispurpose · 21/10/2020 17:10

I had a rhinoplasty done one year ago. I had been hating my nose since I was a teenager. I am in my 40s and broke my nose so had to have some work done anyway. That’s when I decided to have a full rhinoplasty.
I have only one regret, not to have done it earlier. My nose still looks very natural but much more refined than it used to be. No one could tell that I had a rhinoplasty and I didn’t tell anyone apart from close family and a couple of friends.
One year later I don’t feel any pain at all, have no side effects. Just a normal looking/pretty nose Wink

The cast was removed about a week post surgery and the nose already looked pretty good. There was still some bruising but I could hide most of it under a good concealer (I chose it on purpose pre surgery). Two weeks post surgery all the bruising had gone.

FuckKnowsMate · 21/10/2020 17:12

@Sundaeevening

I googled rhinoplasty surgeons in the North West and then went on realself.com to find reviews from other people who’d had surgery done by them. The surgeon I saw last week had the most reviews which were all really good bar two or three. But there are a couple more I would like to see.
I was quoted £6950 too

NCforthispurpose · 21/10/2020 17:13

@Sundaeevening I am 12 months post surgery and my nose doesn’t hurt when it rains, it never has.
I had similar apprehensions to yours which is why I waited to so long to do it. How silly!

PurpleMask · 21/10/2020 17:25

I had to name change for this. I had a bump shaved off my nose at 15. I was very insecure about my looks and had been bullied a lot from
10 upwards about my appearance, oddly it wasn't my nose per say but more my general appearance. My DM is very image aware (still is in her 70s!) and she decided that I would look prettier with a straight nose, so she arranged it all and I had it done over a holiday break. No one noticed exactly that I looked different but she was right it did make me look prettier. Which in turn made my life easier. Only DH knows the truth about my surgery other friends think I broke and had it fixed due to an accident in my late teens.

BasinHaircut · 21/10/2020 18:45

@FuckKnowsMate I keep meaning to ask you too - would you share your questions with me, that you’d planned to ask your consultant? I’ve got my consultation next Tuesday and I am starting to get a list together

No regrets from me, although I cried for a couple of weeks after when looking in the mirror because my reflection just didn't look like me and was a bit much for my brain to process. Very happy though and was done almost 20 years ago!

Tsubasa1 · 21/10/2020 19:07

I have a terrible nose but I don't think I'd be brave enough to go through with a nose job. I watch a youtuber called Lori Hill (who is very into plastic surgery) and she says that if you have a nose job, the nose will get smaller in time. I'm not sure exactly why but I've read that it's because when modifying the structure of the nose, the lack of support means changes to the nose and also general shrinking. On the other hand catrilige grows in our older years but in a rhinoplasty part may be removed. I'd say just pick the best surgeon you can and as high a price you can afford. Good luck x

FuckKnowsMate · 21/10/2020 19:18

@BasinHaircut yes of course! I’m back in work tomorrow so will have my list of questions then and will post them on the thread

BasinHaircut · 21/10/2020 21:23

@FuckKnowsMate thank you!

@FuckKnowsMate @NCforthispurpose Thank you for the info!! Wish I had considered this years ago! x

Sundaeevening · 22/10/2020 01:31

I wonder whether a nose job can cause snoring?

CutToChase · 22/10/2020 04:28

My best friend had a nose job and is thrilled with it. Thats the important thing. Secretly although I would never tell her though, she actually looked more beautiful before (DP agrees)

Clarabellgrace · 22/10/2020 06:23

I had the OP when I was 19. I am now much much older. No regrets whatsoever. I hated my old nose so much it affected my self esteem. Now I look at pics of me with my old nose and I think the old nose looks great too.
However having the bump off and the size reduced changed my perception of myself for the better. a
I felt normal. I also changed my hairstyle before my big reveal to avoid having to explain that my enhanced appearance was due to a nose job. I was a bit sensitive about having my nose as a discussion object. I felt amazing after the OP which helped make me look more beautiful. It's not perfect but it's perfectly fine by me. Don't expect perfection, just expect an improvement and you won't regret it one bit.

BasinHaircut · 22/10/2020 07:05

@Tsubasa1 and @Sundaeevening they are both great questions for my list thank you!

I would hate to start snoring and whilst I don’t think that a nose could get smaller, I don’t know whether it’s an old wives tale or not that noses continue to grow so would be good to know how that is affected by rhinoplasty.

@CutToChase in what way do you think more beautiful before? Was it a drastic change?

namechange202086 · 22/10/2020 07:33

I have wanted one for years as I've been unhappy with my nose. Finally decided to go for it and got in touch with a few clinics but they said they weren't taking any bookings or doing consultations. I'm in Scotland so not sure if rules are different here at the moment.

NCforthispurpose · 22/10/2020 07:48

For me it wasn’t a drastic change. My previous nose did not have any noticeable feature or major imperfection that others would notice. However it lacked elegance, the dorsum was too broad and lacked definition. There was a small hump as well. The surgeon agreed and said it was not very feminine and did not suit me (as I am quite elegant, feminine, with fine features etc).
The changes have been subtle but the nose looks now perfect to me, with a subtle slope, no hump and bump, a narrower and more defined dorsum.
The surgeon didn’t do much to the tip (just a bit of cartilage reduction I think) as it didn’t really need much and the risk is to give it the typical “pinched” aspect of American TV stars. He told me that if that’s the look I was looking for, I should go and see someone else.
The outcome is that I feel much more confident now and stop thinking about my nose. What’s quite impressive is that it hasn’t changed the way I look drastically so people did not notice. I am still my previous self with my unique nose, only those imperfections have gone.
Even my husband (who thought it was fine and didn’t push me to have the operation) keeps telling me how pretty it looks now and in hindsight it was a brilliant decision.

What’s important when looking for a surgeon is to make sure your objectives are well aligned, whatever you want to achieve. Some surgeons will only make subtle changes that don’t change you drastically, they will design a nose that suits YOU. Others might make the same nose to everyone, a small nose with a pinched tip which used to be fashionable some years ago, but that’s when people can tell you had a nose job.

FuckKnowsMate · 22/10/2020 09:11

@BasinHaircut here was the drafted list of questions I had. Some might sound stupid, I don’t know, but I wanted to make sure I would be asking all the right things and coming away from the appointment with a lot more detailed info.
If anyone else has any questions that are worth asking I would appreciate it also because I think I will book in with the surgeon again to go over all this in more detail.

Has anyone here had rhinoplasty and do you regret it?
Sundaeevening · 22/10/2020 11:09

I would want to ask how they will go about designing a nose for a specific person. Do they try out different ones in 3D photos and give the client the chance to choose which one they prefer? And what techniques do they have for making the actual new nose look like the 3D photos - is it a case of the surgeon just doing their best to copy the photos, by looking at them, or is there more sophisticated technology involved?

BasinHaircut · 22/10/2020 11:10

Ahh amazing @FuckKnowsMate those are amazing questions. I’m going to do a list too and I’ll share back.

OP posts:
Sundaeevening · 22/10/2020 11:13

I would also want to ask - do they reoperate for free if you’re not happy?

Ddot · 22/10/2020 19:20

My niece had her nose done, bump, droopy tip problems with smell and breathing. Wasnt good result, needed to be redone. He took too much out then had to take fat from her crotch to build back up. Do your research then do more research
