If you have long hair...

If you have long hair how do you style it on a daily basis? I'm really not very good at styling my hair, which is wavy and down to my mid back (or a little longer). Every now and again I straighten it but on a daily basis I use a claw clip to get it out of my face. I've thought of having a fringe cut in as I love the look but, at 47, I wonder if I'm too old for that. This is the type of fringe I like hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/images/actress-dakota-johnson-attends-the-chanel-paris-salzburg-news-photo-1594677937.jpg?crop=0.406xw:0.405xh;0.270xw,0.0147xh&resize=480:* I also like curtain bangs but wonder how difficult they are to style as they would probably just hang down if left to air dry (which is what I usually do, even in winter). I have watched plenty of YT videos for ideas but when I tried to copy the styles even the more basic ones seemed difficult to replicate.

Don't do it. Fringes are such a Pfaff to deal with and seem to have a mind of their own.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 07/10/2020 16:26

To me it would depend on how long it will take to re-grow if you regret it.

SoupDragon · 07/10/2020 16:27

Fringes are great. They cover forehead wrinkles 😂

SoupDragon · 07/10/2020 16:28

I have a fringe. It's not a faff and can easily be beaten into submission on the few occasions it decides to curl out to the side like a comedy moustache shape.

doadeer · 07/10/2020 16:30

Mine's really long like yours. I do:

Messy bun
High pony tail
Down wavy
Down straight
Down curly
Down with a little bun on top
Fishtail plait

doadeer · 07/10/2020 16:30

I don't have the time for a fringe. I used to have to get it cut weekly 🙄

HowLongToXmas · 07/10/2020 16:31

@doadeer When it's down does it look 'done' as in looked after? When mine is down it just looks unkempt and messy.

Ponytail every day, occasionally half up half down

Funny enough I had it cut for first time since Jan yesterday and had a mask. It looked much better than normal haha .

I have a toddler so I spend most of my days in the park and playing with play doh so I just usually always wear a hat over my hair.

This is my hair

Mine's long and is between curly and wavy . I don't style I apart from using a curl cream and scrunching the curl in.

HowLongToXmas · 07/10/2020 17:37

@doadeer You hair is amazing - I love the colour and the curl. Is that natural or did you use heat?

@goose1964 Maybe I should try a curl cream and see what happens. Would it turn my waves into soft curls? Or do you need some curl for it to work?

doadeer · 07/10/2020 17:44

I used to have it done professionally but I did a home dye a month or two ago. £12 ish instead of £80! Took 3 pots of dye.

I did it with wide barrel tongs but I leave it natural lots and it's similar but just not as polished looking. More like the waves you get on holiday when your hair has been in sea and sun.

Fidgety31 · 07/10/2020 18:32

@ doadeer I’m really surprised to hear you dye your hair that colour.
My hair is naturally that colour and I’ve been teased my whole life because of it . I couldn’t imagine anyone will fully putting themselves through that?

Fizbosshoes · 07/10/2020 18:40

I have to have mine tied back for work, it's either high ponytail, chignon (that makes it sound fancier - basically twisted up and secured with a clip) side plait, or 2 french plaits

Oh really?! I get lots of compliments 🙈 I've been brown, black, blonde - usually alternate every couple of years but I think this colour is the most flattering as I have green eyes.

I didn't know people still teased about "ginger" anymore!

doadeer · 07/10/2020 18:46

OP fish tails last really well all day even if they go a bit messy it's good. Actually not difficult to do

@doadeer anything but the GHD plates doesn't last on me. I have a curling iron/wand but by the end of the day the curls have dropped completely.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 07/10/2020 18:50

I used to have very long hair (think anything between bra stap & long enough to sit on). I mostly used to wear it in a plait or a bun. There are lots of tutorials for all kinds of both on YouTube these days & they don't have to be boring.

HowLongToXmas · 07/10/2020 18:53

I might buy one of those real-hair clip on fringes and get that cut properly by my hairdresser and play with that...

MrsVeryTired · 07/10/2020 18:59

(also late 40's) I have long wavy hair and like "curtain bangs", more gentle than a proper fringe, I like a bit of hair around my face when I put my hair up, less severe.

HowLongToXmas · 07/10/2020 19:06

@MrsVeryTired How long are your curtain bangs? And are they quite thick? I'm conscious of not taking too much hair up for bangs as mine is OK but not terribly thick. So if I had two good chunks cut to bangs it might make the rest look too thin.

OP posts:
MrsVeryTired · 07/10/2020 19:12

Not very thick, I don't have very thick hair (but do have a lot of hair) this is the kind of thing I ask for, Dakota Johnson again Grin

I like to pretend it gives me a "french" vibe

HowLongToXmas · 07/10/2020 19:14

I like that, even a little longer towards the sides, like layers. I might try that next time I go to my hairdresser's.

OP posts:
MrsVeryTired · 07/10/2020 19:16

I have long layers also, and between cuts at the hairdressers (or if hairdressers ever get closed again) I trim my fringe myself, very easy to do once the hairdresser has done it for you.

Purpledaisychain · 07/10/2020 19:45

I have a fringe. Would rather not but it comes in handy if I'm having a spot outbreak on my forehead.

I can do a few simple buns. Usually either just a ponytail or plait coiled up and pinned in place, sometimes with a topsy tail for added detail.
