Orgasm or Deep Throat?

DesignerDesigner · 05/10/2020 07:54

Friend has asked for this for a present but she can't get to try. I've used both but actually gave away as they were too bright for me.

She' s very pale and had been using Sex Appeal but thinks it's too pale.

I know Hannah Martin loves Deep Throat for all skin tones (in her John Lewis Xmas box) but not sure.

Deep Throat. I’ve only ever swatched them but I find Orgasm too glittery

VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 10:59

@nitgel

i can't get worked up about their naming of products as they are bloody gorgeous.
This. Orgasm is Nars most iconic product so it’s unlikely to change any time soon.
TheQueef · 08/10/2020 11:34

Arguably Orgasm would have a colour association because we flush at climax so although it's imo naff and lazy there is substance.
Deep Throat however causes colour because of asphyxiation and the over riding association is a rape film.
A woman who's rapist memorialised her assault on film and there was also a film with dogs I believe.

If it was unknowingly it would be bad but it isn't. They know and must be laughing up their sleeves.
I'm not Nars target audience either but I am insulted and will make sure none of my hard earned goes in their pockets.

JKRforPM · 08/10/2020 11:48

I think what pisses me off most about this is how it’s in plain sight - the normalisation of it being cool and edgy to choke yourself on dick.

How have we got here as a society that this is ok??

AgathaX · 08/10/2020 12:02

What bloody awful names. I can only imagine what sad little idiots work there that come up with this insulting shit. And then to try to explain it away as being empowering??

EdgeOfACoin · 08/10/2020 12:57

I could be Nars' target audience. I wear make-up everyday. My disposable income increased significantly within the last year, so am in a position to buy more expensive brands if I wanted to.

There's no way on earth I'd buy any product called Deep Throat. How utterly degrading.

I refused to buy Herbal Essences shampoo for years when their TV ad depicted a women trotting around in the shower gasping 'yes' while the tagline read: 'Herbal Essences: a totally organic experience'. I started buying it again the moment they stopped running the ad.

Calling a blusher Deep Throat is way worse.

This is a CP from Wiki...
While recovering at the home of her parents, Boreman became involved with Chuck Traynor. According to Boreman, Traynor was charming and attentive at first, then became violent and abusive. She said he forced her to move to New York, where he became her manager, pimp, and husband.[5]

Allegedly coerced by Traynor,[7] Boreman was soon performing as Linda Lovelace in hardcore "loops", short 8 mm silent films made for peep shows.[8]

Boreman starred in a 1969 bestiality film titled Dogarama (also known as Dog Fucker).[9] She later denied having appeared in the film until several of the original loops proved otherwise.[5][10] In 2013, Larry Revene, the cameraman who actually shot the film, spoke about it for the first time, during which he asserted that Boreman was a willing participant and that no coercion took place.[8] Porn star Eric Edwards, who was present for the shoot, has similarly claimed there was no obvious coercion going on and that Boreman appeared to be a cooperative performer.[11]

In 1971, Boreman also starred in the golden shower film titled Piss Orgy.[12]

In 1972, Boreman starred in Deep Throat, in which she performed deep-throating. The film achieved surprising and unprecedented popularity among mainstream audiences and even a review in The New York Times.

She's dead now so Nars won't be upsetting her.
It's such a sinister, seedy subject and they happily slide it in to make up bags everywhere.

I think one or two will be surprised and change brands so we don't inadvertently give money to people celebrating abuse.

MabelMoo23 · 08/10/2020 14:01

I have Deep Throat, it’s in the John Lewis beauty box collaboration with Hannah Martin. Hannah did actually make reference to the name in the unboxing video as part of the JL Beauty weekend virtual events - nervously laughing about it. I couldn’t work out whether she was embarrassed about it, or disagreed with the name but thought “hey don’t bite the hand that feeds you”

It would be interesting to ask John Lewis why they feel it’s appropriate to include such a name product in their beauty box.

I agree the colour is beautiful, but the name doesn’t sit well with me and I only have it as it was in the box.

TheQueef · 08/10/2020 14:18

I will bow to S&B wisdom on the product.
It sounds like it's the real deal and popular, good enough to stand alone without a cheap shock name.
In fact.
If it was named Flush of Freedom of Contented Glow I'd probably want to buy it after this thread Grin it's a shame.

They don't need the shock value, that's the kick in the teeth.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 08/10/2020 14:24

Another one who thought this was posted in the wrong topic at the very least

TheQueef · 08/10/2020 14:32

More grist for the mill Splash I imagine 9/10 clicks on the thread were to report a troll.
Which demonstrates how the phrase is associated to some women.

EdgeOfACoin · 08/10/2020 14:47

I didn't understand why such a thread would be in S&B.

Oh well, I know not to buy anything from NARS in future. Still, I'm sure they didn't want to appeal to a make-up-wearing 30-something woman anyway.

Susannahmoody · 08/10/2020 16:38

Well they've certainly got some exposure on here now!

TheQueef · 08/10/2020 17:06

Aye Sue and a few new sales unfortunately Sad
Hopefully enough of us Will Now Never Buy to offset it though!

And enough people who didn't know the name originated in the complete degradation of a woman might avoid paying to be insulted. Smile

NiceGerbil · 08/10/2020 22:51

Do they ever do makeup called this like, don't let the bastards grind you down? If you get my gist.

That would be good Grin

happilybemused · 09/10/2020 08:58

Bumpy ride is my favourite Nars blusher. Very natural

YellowBeryl1 · 09/10/2020 09:21

Orgasm is brilliant IMO, my favourite blusher. The name suits it as it gives the glow you can get from an orgasm Grin

Some of the other names as disgusting, like deep throat, I wouldn't buy those and have been inspired to complain now.

If someone has an alternative as good as Orgasm I'd be glad to switch from Nars based on this thread.

Housewife2010 · 09/10/2020 11:44

These two blushers have been around and well known for twenty years. Why are Munsnetters only just getting irate now?

TheQueef · 09/10/2020 11:49

Personally Housewife I'd barely heard of Nars nvm any products but the thread title caused me to think S&B was being trolled so I clicked to report.
Then I read on and now know S&B is safe it's women being trolled by Nars and paying for the privilege.

What do you think? Does it have negative connotations for you?

Housewife2010 · 09/10/2020 11:54

I think it's a really tacky name. Orgasm was bad enough, but Deep Throat is vile.

VinylDetective · 09/10/2020 12:24

I think if anyone’s got the time and headspace to get bent out of shape about the names of cosmetics they’d never heard of a week ago, they’re probably leading a pretty carefree life. I don’t imagine that most Nars customers give a tuppeny damn. They buy the product not the label on the box.

TheQueef · 09/10/2020 12:52

Self isolating has it's advantages Vinyl Smile
As I said I'm not offended or bent out of shape, just disappointed. Irritated on their customers behalf enough to send an email and reply on the thread.
I wouldn't even go as far as saying boycott Nars.
Just give a thought as to why they chose the name and if it makes you feel uncomfortable demonstrate that by not giving your money.

NiceGerbil · 09/10/2020 13:12

Nah I'm not giving money to a company that references a film where the actress says it was rape, and others on the set concur her partner was violent, and says it's empowering for women.

I'm not bent out of shape either, more, what on earth?

The ones called underage red and lolita by a different brand are also, just why?

We don't all have to feel the same way about these cosmetic names, obviously!

DesignerDesigner · 09/10/2020 13:14

FWIW I had no idea when I started this thread that so many people didn't recognise Nars' Orgasm name- it's been a cult product for years and that I was a troll!

And on J Lewis beauty video/workshop last week, Hannah Martin put Deep Throat in their Xmas beauty box. So I kind of assumed S&B gurus would know :)

I emailed Nars and have had no reply unlike @TheQueef

I sent a polite email and asked why they used such a name, given the connotations.

I won't stop buying Nars on the basis of this BUT I think their whole attitude to giving sexual names to products- hello Climax mascara- is wrong.

They need a new marketing team and one who understand women.

Having said that, Nails Inc (nail varnish) are skating on thin ice with some of the names for their nail varnish, especially the duos and the Christmas/ party colours.

Why? Just why?

NiceGerbil · 09/10/2020 13:18

I think a lot of people who don't usually come to S&B saw the thread title and thought, troll thread, or, that sounds interesting!

A thread called nars orgasm wouldn't have had quite the same effect, I'm sure!
