I’ve followed the brand for a while but not actually purchased, trying to work out what has happened with their instagram and the ‘fan groups’ on FB?

Ha, yes, another here who was thinking along the same lines with the "she" dress group. Initially thought it was quite a harmless, if twee, group but it rapidly descended into madness. I've hidden it recently as it all got so ridiculous every week with women despairing over not being able to buy the latest design/it being the wrong shape for them etc.

Fluffalo · 29/09/2020 09:43

Oooo I can't figure out what the dress group is....she dresses?

JuneFromBethesda · 29/09/2020 09:53

Lush used to have an absolutely rabid fan forum full of women competing for factory visits and fighting over batches of "limited edition" reissued shower gel.

Thank you for this, I'm having a shit morning and it made me laugh

Thehollyandtheirony · 29/09/2020 10:48

Bloody hell, purity spiral dungarees now. Have we reached peak 2020?

EastonSarah · 29/09/2020 10:59

@hammeringinmyhead

They play a lot on the "new mums who have lost their confidence" schtick. I was on the FB group and some of them posted selfies in a different pair every morning for a bit of validation. I understand, to an extent. There are similar groups for Tatty Devine jewellery. Lush used to have an absolutely rabid fan forum full of women competing for factory visits and fighting over batches of "limited edition" reissued shower gel.
Ha! Damn, savage. I remember the Lush forum being rather nice and fun in general - rose tinted?
hammeringinmyhead · 29/09/2020 12:31

Depends when you were there. Not if you were on it from about 2002 to when their marketing manager had a fit, said we weren't "living up to Lush's expectations of customers" and deleted it all!

She=Popsy?

She=Popsy?
That’s the one I was thinking of.

LadyR77 · 29/09/2020 17:53

Yes to Popsy.

Fluffalo · 29/09/2020 17:58

Thank you, never heard of popsy!

SunshineThelma · 29/09/2020 18:16

I find the tribal nature of fan groups really weird. I was on a FB wedding group a few years ago for 'alternative' weddings and there was a competitive one-upmanship vibe where without fail they'd all wear a dress from the same Eastern European brand, Tatty Devine jewellery and Irregular Choice shoes. All being 'alternative' in exactly the same way.
That said, I'm also fairly active on a make up/ beauty group that goes through phases of members hunting out 'it' products, but it's not tied to a particular brand or look, so it doesn't have so much of the boastful, 'haul' thing going on.

MalcolmTuckersBollockingface · 30/09/2020 09:57

It’s like that on Dr Marten groups too where people covet limited edition stuff and there’s a oneupmanship over who can secure this prestigious item. People commonly buy shows that are too small too.

@fridgepants

"Very similar to L&Y and a certain bra company as well."

Is that bra company one that specialises in bf-friendly bras?

I've been looking at L+Y for a while, but I have a really large bust and it looks like the bib won't even cover my nipples, so they'd just look daft. I like the idea that clothes don't primarily have to be figure-hugging and flattering, but I'm a tall hourglass and am not sure how much I can lean into the giant toddler aesthetic that would result.

Apparently not that great if you are tall which is why I’ve held back. Bib issues are definitely a thing.

I have only discovered this brand today via a recommendation in the Guardian and was pleasantly surprised to see a size 18 model (my size) on the first page of the website.

Very amusing looking at the bonkers Facebook group

TeachesOfPeaches · 30/09/2020 11:35

Just looked at Frugi from this discussion also. Do people seriously pay £29 for 1 pair of kid's jeans?

EasterIssland · 30/09/2020 11:40

never bought l&y but have seen them recommended in some scandi groups.

I think many people feel that if they dont get the latest print from the latest drop from x brand then they're no cool and have to get it and also multiple others. sometimes I've had to disconnect for a bit from some of them as it becomes overwhelming. for me the worse scenario is when many one day say my dh is mad at me for so much spending I need to destash so we can afford some food and a few days later they put another picture of their latest purchases.. it's like becoming part of the cult is making them have some real problems.

there is a brand I love and some of the prints are going on eBay for 70-120£ when rrp was £20.. I think that's crazy

I'd pay it (tho never bought jeans from them tho bought many of their clothes)
  1. I can afford it, so I see no harm there
  2. Once we dont need it anymore I resell it on many of the bst pages, for 1/2 or so, so I recover part of the money
  3. Many times I've bought their clothes when there is offers 342 or 30% off, or stashed for the next year.

I see no harm in spending that if you can afford it same way some people use iPhones or some expensive clothes. for mee the problem is when spending £29 on these means your kids might not have food tomorrow or a bill won't be paid (which seems really common in the groups I'm on)

TeachesOfPeaches · 30/09/2020 11:50

I could afford it but I only have 1 child so can't hand down and end up giving old clothes to the charity shop.

I'm amazed that there are people who get into debt etc over certain brands of clothes and spend their day arguing with people in brand fan groups!

Fluffalo · 30/09/2020 12:14

Yes, the posts around beans on toast for the rest of the month but yippee I have this print are either worrying or they are mocking those who don't have much money, either way pretty weird.

msgloria · 30/09/2020 14:32

As I've said previously, I know many of the people in these groups are genuinely struggling. Even when knowing that however, I find the cognitive dissonance quite hard to swallow. You've got all these people championing their ethical, organic clothing choices but then buying way more than they need and taking part in group orders for stuff to be shipped to them from shops overseas.

sonjadog · 30/09/2020 14:33

I want to see this mad fandom. Which fb group is the best for it?
