Too old for shimmery eye shadows?

Whatisgoingonhere · 15/09/2020 11:46

Hi everyone,

I’m 42 and just wondering if I’m too old now for slightly shimmery eye shadows? I love a light gold or peachy shimmer on my lids but not sure if it ages me.

What’s the general consensus?

Thanks!

I'm 42 (today, in fact!) and I still wear it. Only on the lower lid, and only a subtle shade. I've never liked matt make up.

curlytops21 · 15/09/2020 11:55

Also 42 and also like a wee shimmery eyeshadow but quite subtle colours. I absolutely love the Kiko eyeshadow sticks in an orangey bronze colour, copper etc. They last all day long too.

Whatisgoingonhere · 15/09/2020 12:11

Happy birthday, GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal!

Oh those Kiko sticks sound lovely, I’ll have to have a look, thanks curlytops21!

42? Forty bloody two? Jesus woman, get your bikini on, slap your shimmery eye shadow on and get out there, before you hit 49 and really understand what too old is......

Housewife2010 · 15/09/2020 13:15

I'm late forties and wear shimmery eyeshadow. My lids aren't wrinkled and I think it looks great.

Ninkanink · 15/09/2020 13:26

No woman is ever too told to wear something that she loves.

BunnyLovesBananas · 15/09/2020 13:27

You're not too old for anything. Get what you like and what you think flatters your.

The reason some people say older ladies shouldn't wear shimmery eye shadow is because it might show up wrinkles so just see how it looks on you

Shimmer can bring light to the area and help to give a youthful look

Absolutely agree! You're only 42 anyway, you're in your prime Grin go for it x
withlotsoflove · 15/09/2020 15:34

I’d wear it! I am 49. Not seen much ageing since 42 tbh 🤣

MoltonSilver · 15/09/2020 15:54

I'm late 40s and I don't wear shimmery eye shadow anymore. It looks awful on me. It sits in any little wrinkles and highlights them making me look way older than I am. It's just not flattering anymore. Mat looks way better. Do one eye mat and one eye shimmer to compare. Maybe it looks great on you.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/09/2020 16:30

You can wear shimmer at any age. Just get a proper primer on first if you have creases

Thank you!

I should clarify, when I said "lower lid", I meant the lower bit of my top eyelid, not the actual lower lid. That would look weird.

Oblomov20 · 15/09/2020 17:45

Good God woman? Why? Too old? No!

Bloomburger · 15/09/2020 18:08

I recently bought a lovely Charlotte Tilbury shimmery set which you then look up how to apply and it looks very cool even if I say so myself.

I'm knocking on the door of 46 too!

Go for it. I think make up has moved on from safe browns and slate tones and now you can wear anything.

They even sell blue mascara again 😂

curlytops21 · 15/09/2020 18:48

Haha i did wonder about this! Glad you clarified. 🙂👍🏻

BlueThistles · 15/09/2020 19:39

I cannot find matte eyeshadow palettes, I need one, in warm browns coppers and peaches but it doesn't appear to exist.

I do miss my shimmer years but Im 50 odd now 🤣

Oly4 · 15/09/2020 21:24

I’m 44 and still wear shimmers. I think they look great

Whatisgoingonhere · 16/09/2020 10:09

Thank goodness, and thanks everyone! Just having a bit of a downer lately about how worn out I’m looking, but I’ll definitely start wearing shimmers again, I love them!!

Depends - I think everyone should avoid awful shimmery pale blue shadow.

Everything else go for it

NotEvenTheKing · 16/09/2020 10:37

I'm 35, so a but younger. But have horrible hooded eyes. I thought I'd could no longer wear the glittery shadows I've always loved. But watched some YouTube tutorials (actual make up artists, not youtubers) and learnt that it's just placement. So I've been practising. If I keep the shimmer on the 'visible' part of my lid (not much!) or just on the movable part, so it's mostly seen when I blink etc it looks ok and doesn't draw attention to the hooded part. Not sure if this helps ... Wayne Goss has helped me loads.

Whatisgoingonhere · 16/09/2020 10:43

Thanks NotEvenTheKing, I try to do that but occasionally get carried away! Grin that’s why I can’t wear dark eyeshadow, I end up looking a bit goth! 😂

I agree with other people wear whatever makes you feel great.

The actress who plays 'the handler' on Umbrella Academy (netflix) often wears bold colours and a glitter eye. Granted it's part of the character but I think she looks fab and she is 53.

Thecobwebsarewinning · 16/09/2020 12:34

I’m 59 and think life is too short to wear boring matte eyeshadow. It’s shimmer, metallic or glitter all the way for me.

To be fair, I’m not wrinkly yet but even when I am I think I’d rather have shimmery wrinkles than dull ones.

Laiste · 16/09/2020 12:43

*@BlueThistles@ i like a matte shadow as well. None of the ones in ''affordable'' ranges seem to last more than an hour but if you are prepared to pay a bit more then the Urban Decay 'Naked' pallets are good. No shimmer and long lasting.

fantasmasgoria1 · 16/09/2020 12:45

I wear metallic and shimmer shadows. I wear glitter and glitter liner. My make up is goth and I absolutely love it. I am mid 40s and I don't look at things and think I'm too old to wear certain kinds of makeup or clothing etc. I see loads of women over 40 wearing metallic, glitter, shimmer etc. Just go for it
