Too old for shimmery eye shadows?

Hi everyone,

I’m 42 and just wondering if I’m too old now for slightly shimmery eye shadows? I love a light gold or peachy shimmer on my lids but not sure if it ages me.

What’s the general consensus?

I am 46 and second that Kiko stock. I use number 6 which is a bronze/gold colour and it stays on all day. It’s an exact copy of a Bobbi Brown one but less than half the price. I was skeptical as to whether it would stay on as long but one time I tested it - one on each eye - and it was completely indistinguishable from the Bobbi Brown one.

I just don't understand this idea that after a certain age, women aren't allowed to wear stuff they'd like to wear. What - as some kind of punishment for ageing? I might understand it if some awful misogynist spouted it, but when women seem to think they have to stop wearing something once they're past 30 or 40 or whatever it is - it's not only ridiculous but depressing.

If you like something, and it looks good on you, and you can afford it, and you haven't like shoplifted it or something, of-fucking-course you should wear it. Why the hell not?

@SkyMoo1 I couldn't agree more! Life is too short. Why is it always women over 30 or 40 or 50, shouldn't wear this or that ? men are not subject to the same bullshit. Love the link

I'm now 44 & I like to wear Sunset Glow by Clinique to work which is nice & shimmery, it looks nice with my dark brown eyeliner & black mascara..
Now thinking I may need to apply primer first but then again not sure if I care enough to bother...
Would it need to be a primer especially for eyes?

it is about how you wear it OP. Pat a little on the lid using your finger right above your iris. This will reflect light and look pretty and is OK at any age. Don't spread it about above the crease as this is where the skin ages and it can highlight crepiness. Keep it matte above the crease and use a little shimmer below the crease

My mum wore shimmery brown shadow until she was well into her 60s and it looked lovely and classy. She stopped wearing it because of eye irritation. I think you should wear what you like.

Ive ordered the Urban Decay matte set, but today Im wearing a smattering of SHIMMER☺️

I actually think older women look better on shimmery eye shadow although it goes against The Advice. It looks kind of playful and pretty. Go for it.

Plus shimmers now have moved on a lot and the textures are lovely. The Charlotte Tilbury Golden Goddess palette is beautiful and easy to apply. No shimmery cheeks from fallen glitter!

Also shimmer looks especially good if you have a tan.. natural or fake.

I am 60 and do not have crepey eyelids (yet!) and do like shimmery eyeshadows.I think mature eyes can often take shimmer as long as it is not big glitter such as some Urban Decay shadows which I used to wear. Bobbi Brown does some lovely subtle shimmer shades . Though I also like quite colourful shades too!

do you use a primer or anything in your eyelids before applying eyeshadow? Mine rarely stays on longer than a few hours, and end up very washed out looking half way through the night.

I’m 59 and think life is too short to wear boring matte eyeshadow. It’s shimmer, metallic or glitter all the way for me.

To be fair, I’m not wrinkly yet but even when I am I think I’d rather have shimmery wrinkles than dull ones.

Me too. I love a bit of urban decay. Just put a little primer on or not!
