Seasalt coat: Janelle or Plant Hunter?

RooKangaroo · 03/09/2020 19:15

It's going to be one of these, but I can't easily work out the differences. Looks like slightly different lengths (Janelle longer), but maybe that's it.

Does anyone have either and recommend it? It has anyone tried both and has a preference?

I've got the Janelle. Best coat I've ever had. It does me 3 seasons. I live in one of the rainiest parts of the UK and it gets very cold too. The coat is excellent. I've washed it in the machine with Nikwax and it came out lovely.

mrssmiling · 03/09/2020 19:53

Another vote for the Janelle - mine’s on its third winter too.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/09/2020 19:55

Oh I meant I wear it autumn, winter, spring but this is also the third year of having the coat. Check out the sales; mine was nearly half off in the John Lewis sale.

mrssmiling · 03/09/2020 19:57

Should say, the Janelle seemed expensive when I bought it, but has been worth every penny. Still looks good, and the lining is warm and cosy, showing hardly any wear.

RevIMJolly · 03/09/2020 21:30

I've bought the Janelle at the weekend. Is it really warm? I'll be standing on the sidelines at rugby and doing dog walks.

ChessieFL · 03/09/2020 21:31

I love my Janelle.

YorkieTheRabbit · 03/09/2020 22:14

I’ve had a Janelle coat for three years, it’s great, it still looks like new despite plenty of wear. I live in a wet and windy part of Yorkshire and it’s spot on. Smile

Tenner · 04/09/2020 08:22

following - I like the plant hunter more but wonder if it is warm enough for the winter...

Floisme · 04/09/2020 08:38

I've had the Janelle 3, maybe 4 years. I don't like it and these days I only wear it in seriously bad weather but I can't fault it on performance - it's never let me down. I do like its longer length - never seen the point of a bad weather coat that leaves your knees soggy.
It also has these tabs to give it a bit more shape on the waist which I can't see on the Plant Hunter

Plump82 · 04/09/2020 12:13

I had the Janelle. Its super cosy and waterproof but for me it was just too long. Im 5ft 2. So i sold it.

ForSaleChesterDraws · 04/09/2020 12:38

I have got both and they are both as good as each other. I am 5'4" and prefer the length of the Plant as it finishes at knee length, and the Janelle is mid calf. Both are just as warm as each other.

My only niggle is about the colour combos that Seasalt use. I have a navy Janelle and don't like the yellow trim on it, and my Plant is green and has a cream fur lining on the hood (I would have preferred a darker lining such as grey or navy).

RooKangaroo · 04/09/2020 16:00

See your point about the colours, @ForSaleChesterDraws. Maybe I'll end up choosing based primarily on the colour I want....

I'm 5'9", so guess the Janelle wouldn't be too long on me.

Thanks all

@Floisme
".........I do like its longer length - never seen the point of a bad weather coat that leaves your knees soggy."

I couldn't agree more.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/09/2020 17:25

Seasalt clothes are far too bright for me. My Janelle is black with little blue bits.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 04/09/2020 17:30

I want one of these so following, my sea salt raincoat was £100 ten years ago and I still wear it every single year, best value item I've ever bought I think!

Strugglingtodomybest · 04/09/2020 17:48

I love my Janelle, I wear it a lot and 3 years on it still looks new(ish!). It's very cosy.

reefedsail · 04/09/2020 17:56

I love my Janelle too. Wear it on the school playground come rain or snow (teacher- duty), sorting my son's boat out in 5 degrees sideways rain or for a mild potter in Autumn leaves. Performs well in all scenarios. I don't think it is the most beautiful thing in the world, but inside it is a good place!

Murinae · 04/09/2020 18:13

I have both. The Janelle is lighter and has the waist poppers. I got the Janelle in the sale at the beginning of the this year for £85. I’ve had the plant hunter for three years now and still looks pretty new despite wearing it daily in autumn/winter

RooKangaroo · 04/09/2020 18:22

Definitely leaning towards the Janelle, thanks all

I'll probably go for navy. I wear a LOT of navy..

OP posts:
Murinae · 04/09/2020 18:45

Why not order both and try them and send the one you don’t like as much back.

RooKangaroo · 04/09/2020 21:52

@Murinae, tempting, but I try really hard not to do that. Firstly I might end up wanting to keep both, and because it's a hassle to get it to the post office and it feels like the money is already spent, I won't bother returning. Secondly, I hear stories about returned clothes not being re-sold and ending up god knows where (and even more so with Covid). Hopefully Seasalt don't do that, but it worries me :(

My Janelle arrived today in anticipation of standing on football sidelines this winter. Love the length and that I can put a jumper under it for extra warmth - I got the navy blue.

Miaowse · 04/09/2020 22:05

I read a thread like this a few years ago and got a Janelle based on all the rave reviews. Unfortunately it was not a good buy - I rarely wear it as the length does not suit me at all. I also find the arms on Seasalt coats are not quite long enough.

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2020 22:15

A Janelle is on my winter treat list!

Murinae · 05/09/2020 00:01

@RooKangaroo I understand I’m a bit like that too though with such expensive stuff I do make the effort to return it to get my money back! I think they do resell the stuff as I’ve had coats from them where the tissue paper wrapping has gone off the toggles and the paper in between is missing.
