Seasalt coat: Janelle or Plant Hunter?

RooKangaroo · 03/09/2020 19:15

It's going to be one of these, but I can't easily work out the differences. Looks like slightly different lengths (Janelle longer), but maybe that's it.

Does anyone have either and recommend it? It has anyone tried both and has a preference?

I ordered the Plant Hunter lady week & it’s going back. I’m between regular & tall, so got the tall.

It’s long enough in the arms & it does have shaping drawstrings at the waist, but the hood is very shallow & wouldn’t keep rain off your face. The combo of fake fleece & pinstriped lining in the hood also looks cheap.

I’m 5”8 and love my Janelle, I’m not one for practical clothes normally and was worried it would be frumpy but this will be it’s third winter and it’s perfect for the nursery run in the rain, super warm too. Mine is navy with grey lining and yellow trim. The tabs to give a waist make the shape nicer and I like the long length.

I'm 5'10 and have got 2 Janelles, cheap in Next sale that's why 2, I also ordered the Plant Hunter which was cheap in Next but sent it back as it was too short for me

My navy Janelle arrived today and I love it! I actually like it even more than I thought I would and I'm really pleased.

I'm 5'9", but went for the regular length as I have a short body and thought the tall might be too low where my waist sits. It fits just fine, while still hitting down to my knee.

I am reinstating this thread :)

Just bought the Janelle after getting soaked through in my dog walk.

I never like Seasalt that much, but it's about functionality and being warm and dry

Honestly, last week I went out in my old barbour parka and it rained so much that my jeans got saturated with water and they filled up my welly boots with an inch of water!

Today I wore a tech (Gore tex) jacket and waterproof trousers and still got soaked to the bone (I was out 2 hours in pissing rain though)

Now pinned my hopes on the Janelle !!!

Open to other recommendations too for knee length waterproof coats

Willowcat77 · 14/11/2020 18:31

I also bought the Janelle recently, but the hood was weirdly shallow, leaving my forehead and fringe exposed to the rain, so sadly I had to return it. Would love something similar but with a much bigger hood...

allibebop · 14/11/2020 21:44

Contemplating the Janelle - north east dog walks needs must! I'm only 5ft tall though so will I be swamped?

Willowcat77 · 15/11/2020 11:23

@allibebop Definitely! It would probably reach your ankles at the back!

YerAWizardHarree · 15/11/2020 11:23

I'm short and they both made me look like a flasher BlushGrin

allibebop · 15/11/2020 12:30

Ahh no 😢 any recommendations for something similar that won't drown me? (Long time lurker on s&b - you guys all know your stuff!)

Bargebill19 · 15/11/2020 12:42

Janelle ! It is longer - but it covers the top of welly boots so no drips or drafts!
Yes it is warm and roomy enough to layer up underneath.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 16/11/2020 00:34

I bought a plant hunter coat a few weeks ago and I love it. I'm 5'4" but bought the petite which is perfect for me.

ChickenyChick · 17/11/2020 10:57

yes, Seasalt sometimes do 3 lengths. Genius!

Barbour coats for example are all made for a woman of about 5ft4, so the arms are ridiculously short on my 6 ft frame

puret0ne · 11/01/2021 02:14

I’ve got a Janelle in my shopping cart and ready to go but I want to make sure if the size is right for me. I am 5’2 and comfortably wear a size 8 in Topshop for example. In this case if I go for a petite size 6, will that be ok? I read it comes in big and the overall length is quite long. Please help!

Throughhistory · 20/01/2021 23:40

Just to resurrect this thread, my Janelle arrived today. It's great. I'm 5'8" and the regular is pretty long on me. Also the sleeves come well down over my wrists. Love that the waist poppers are actually at my waist. It's lightweight but warm.

I'd ordered and sent back the Boden Dunbar. It's more modern looking, but the hood fell right down over my face, the waist drawstring was way too high halfway down my ribs, and the sleeves were too wide and flappy at the cuffs so didn't keep the cold out at all.

Thanks for the recommendation, I think the Janelle will be getting a lot of wear.

Dugee · 20/01/2021 23:57

Just placemarking to read later.

PutYourBackIntoit · 21/01/2021 00:04

Love my Jane Lee but was also unsure of colour options. Decided on the chalk grey (which to me is more of a light blue) and love it!
I went for my actual size, and there's plenty of room for a jumper. Love it!!

Throughhistory · 22/01/2021 12:48

Have done my first road field test of the Janelle. Lovely and warm, definitely breathable. Plenty of space for a thick jumper too. Only downside is that the dipped back catches on the back of my wellies with each step - it's a really long coat. Wondering if I should have gone with the plant hunter as it's a bit shorter, but the drawstring waist on that looks very high on the model.

Dugee · 22/01/2021 18:46

I'm 5 feet 6. I prefer the Janelle to the Plant Hunter (don't like the lighter coloured lining on the Plant Hunter). I think I'm going to order Janelle in dark green. Will the regular be an ok length for a 5 foot 6, size 10?

Throughhistory · 22/01/2021 19:11

I'm around 5'7" to 5'8". The regular is knee length at the front and just below the knees at the back on me (reaches top of wellies as mentioned). As long as you want a longish coat, am sure it'll be fine. The sleeves cover half my hands, but I really like that.

Dugee · 22/01/2021 19:23

Thank you @Throughhistory will order tonight.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/02/2021 00:29

I’m going to resurrect this thread again.

I’ve got a Joules Windfield coat which is very similar to the Janelle. I’ve had it two years. It’s a beautiful coat except when I have to wear it done up and then it’s just a total bastard. There’s something wrong with the design of it around the hem, as I walk it rides up and gathers across my thighs and is just the most irritating bloody thing ever. I’m very tempted to try a Janelle.

Dugee · 15/02/2021 18:48

I sent my Janelle back. It felt frumpy when I put it on. I bought an Ilsa Jacobsen one instead.

Psychonabike · 15/02/2021 22:04

Love my Janelle. I'm 5'8" and went for the tall. Mainly because I have a long torso and thick thighs so tired of looking frumpy in mum coats where the waist isn't in quite the right place, or the length cuts across me at my widest part. It's probably the best coat I've owned. OK, it's not glamorous, but it's practical, and for me the length and great fit of the tall version makes it really flattering.

Dugee · 15/02/2021 23:47

Yeah, I think I'm perhaps a bit short for it.
