I was wondering, do you have any personal style/beauty tips that you worked out all by yourself?

I have two:

  1. Never ever apply perfume when you're under stress - running late, or angry, or anxious - it seems to cause that horrible reaction that makes perfume unbearable.
  2. When you are carrying 'le flab' (as I call it) a silk slip looks a million times better under a dress than shapewear. It slides past your creases and moves naturally. And you're comfortable!

What hard-won or fluke inspirations do you have to share?

The converse comment struck a nerve with me Grinten years and I've got to stop wearing them apparently Wink NEVER

Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 09:19

Well I'm 7 years too old to be wearing them. Shame I'm getting a new pair for my birthday!

FairyAndLavender · 01/09/2020 09:27

I don't think my comment was ageist. Although I will admit that I said it with white converse in mind! Sorry. I just don't think they look right on anyone who isn't really young! The same goes for Nike Air Force.

You don't have to agree with me of course but anyhow, that's how I see it! For what it's worth I'm in my twenties and don't think they look 'right' anymore. I think they're very teenager/young adult.

FairyAndLavender · 01/09/2020 09:29

It's also worth keeping in mind that I don't think 40 is 'old' Hmm Just not 'really young adult'. Same goes for those slogan tees with things like 'I woke up like this' and 'Be kind' or 'This is my can't be bothered T'

Floisme · 01/09/2020 09:43

You do realise that Converse have been around since the early 20th century?
I have no problem with young people inventing a look and patenting it for themselves. Nor do I mind when they borrow our stuff. But when they steal our clothes and then start telling us we shouldn't be wearing them any more then they can ffuck right off.

Floisme · 01/09/2020 09:44

And yes - that's fuck with a double f.

Hmm so why not say they don't look good on anyone but teens? Just own it - you think everyone over 40 is haggard and past it 😂

Really? 😂

Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 09:56

Oh dear, I am almost 47 and wore white converse yesterday.....Hmm hope I didn't offend any of the young folk.

Jesus woman! Get a grip!

How could you embarrass yourself like that?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/09/2020 10:16

Exactly - I've been wearing Converse since my teens, so probably at least as long as FairyandLavender has been alive!

The thing is, there isn't some switch that goes off in your head on your 40th that makes you suddenly want to change your look to a more "appropriate", "middle-aged" look. If anything by then you've probably developed your own style and are quietly confident in what works and doesn't work for you. And unlikely to change your mind on that because of the opinion of a twenty-something! Wink

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/09/2020 10:17

I was supposed to quote FloIsMe there, but I forgot.

MikeUniformMike · 01/09/2020 10:32

Not RTFT.

Long skirts are a nightmare - trip hazard on steps and stairs.
Waterproof mascara does not normally last all day.
Jeans with elastane need a belt.
Dresses ride up when you sit down - that shortish dress for the office only got worn once.

MikeUniformMike · 01/09/2020 10:38

Converse look cool but not many look good in them. They are too flat.
Stuff the ageism.

Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 10:47

Oh that's it then, I'm not fit to be let out...I wore my white converse with a very long t shirt material skirt. The shame. It must be my age - I am deluded.

Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 10:49

I agree about waterproof mascara - it always gives me panda eyes.

CarolVordermansArse · 01/09/2020 10:49

@Fatted

I have to disagree with the silk slip sorry. It's just asking for enough static to power the national grid for a few hours.

Also YY to navy is better than black.

I also have to disagree with the silk slip for the same reason.

Charcoal grey is better than navy. Navy is best worn as a uniform that you take off as soon as you can and I find it aging.

PersonaNonGarter · 01/09/2020 10:50

Converse are over move on move on

Nope sorry, I’ll be the judge of what I wear.

BestIsWest · 01/09/2020 10:54

Converse are very uncomfortable and I can’t wear them but I defend my right to have the choice of wearing them, over or not.

Slips work for me. As to colours surely that’s down to your individual colouring?

Wide leg trousers are dangerous.

Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 10:54

Nope, I'm not moving on either - sorry but I am old and stuck in my ways.

PurpleDaisies · 01/09/2020 10:54

According to who? I’ve just ordered another pair and I love them. They suit my feet and they look great. I don’t really care what anyone else thinks.
Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 10:56

And they suit me. Or that might be age related failing eyesight....

LioneIRichTea · 01/09/2020 10:57

According to who?

Probably according to the fashion industry who just want to push the next big thing and get us continually dumping our old stuff so they can remain relevant and make money.

Bluesheep8 · 01/09/2020 10:57

Wide leg trousers with turn ups are LETHAL with heels....
