I was wondering, do you have any personal style/beauty tips that you worked out all by yourself?

I have two:

  1. Never ever apply perfume when you're under stress - running late, or angry, or anxious - it seems to cause that horrible reaction that makes perfume unbearable.
  2. When you are carrying 'le flab' (as I call it) a silk slip looks a million times better under a dress than shapewear. It slides past your creases and moves naturally. And you're comfortable!

What hard-won or fluke inspirations do you have to share?

I sort of agree re foundation - I do use it but I use the tiniest amount of the lightest foundation directly on top of moisturiser. Maybe I shouldn’t bother at all.

I agree re: foundation.

I find BFF cream, eye concealer and then tiny bits of Just A Touch over blemishes much more flattering, and it makes my skin far less prone to oiliness throughout the day.

Stops my eye makeup migrating down my face too.

For all those who love Converse (or similar) but don't find them supportive enough...

Orthotic insoles. Pick them up in Boots. Sorted.

Bluesheep8 · 06/09/2020 12:14

taraR We're not allowed to wear converse if we're over 40 though. Shock

Bluesheep8 · 06/09/2020 12:15

But I'm a 47 year old rebel Grin

TaraR2020 · 06/09/2020 12:17

@Bluesheep8 I was trying to move away from that 😆 I'm still quite a number of years off 40 and don't think it matters either way!

Personally I can't stand the "wearing every colour under the sun in one outfit" look in some of those photos but each to their own.

Well that's fair enough. I'm not keen on some of those outfits either but surely the point is that they wouldn't suddenly become a style you did like if the women wearing them were under 30.

That I do have a waist but it is higher than I assumed it was - higher waisted clothes definitely suit me best. (A couple of years ago I read about the "golden ratio" in outfits and realised it's not just me, there is a sound theory behind it. But I agree with the person upthread with long legs who said it wouldn't work for them - I always thought Theresa May looked out of proportion in trousers and short jackets too.

Scoop necks look much better with my rather short thick neck. I shouldn't wear long earrings and a necklace.

Fly shoes and boots are incredibly comfortable and worth paying a bit more for.

Skinny jeans really don't suit people (ie me!) with big feet, unless they are tucked into either long boots or short boots with slouchy socks/legwarmers.

That my best make-up look is dark greyish brown eyeliner, mascara and lipstick - all those hours spent creating smokey eyes were unnecessary!

When I can be arsed to wear eyeshadow, bronzey colours have the miraculous effect of making my wishy-washy greyish eyes look very blue.

Cocoon dresses are surprisingly flattering and versatile.

Never wear a white top with sun cream - it turns yellow around the edges!

Never wear new jeans in the rain with light coloured shoes, in case the colour runs. I learnt this the hard way.

And I learned this ^^ the hard way Grin

Oh dear. I'm 58 and am currently wearing a pair of white converse. And I have yellow, green and black ones too! My 19 year old son has admired them all so I shall continue to wear them

foxtiger · 06/09/2020 20:16

I am 54 and have 4 pairs, including yellow ones that used to belong to my son!

Fed up with this thread now (at page 7) due to the converse messages.....yawn!

It was an opinion - just like all the other replies (that aren't about converse) - not an order!
