Is my new dress really that bad?

I've been eyeing this dress up for ages but it was £50 so never purchased, I bagged it in the sale yesterday for £22. I love it, I've got black heeled sock boots that can dress it up a little, black ankle boots (optional tights) for casual wear. Can wear it with, without a belt. With or without a denim jacket. Might even get away with trainers. It seemed really versatile. I'm mid twenties and a size 8 if that matters.

Anyway my dickhead husband hates it and has ruined it for me. Says it looks like it belongs to a grandad. I feel a bit sad because of how long I've wanted it.

Opinions?

I like the style but the colours are just a bit ‘medieval peasant’ sorry Blush

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 31/08/2020 10:35

In your mid 20s and size 8 you'd look good in a sack of potatoes, which is exactly what that dress looks like.

DarkmilkAddict · 31/08/2020 10:36

I actually think body shape and height, not dress size or age, are the make or break factors here.

I’m shortish and pear shaped so even at 20 the dress wouldn’t have worked on me. But I can imagine it being so cool on another woman

DarkmilkAddict · 31/08/2020 10:37

Sorry, I mean even at age 20 and size 8, it wouldn’t have worked on me

Scentsandsensible · 31/08/2020 10:39

Am sure you’ll look great in anything.
But to me it looks the worst parts of the 1990’s all seen together

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 31/08/2020 10:44

I'm neutral on the dress. (Hilarious that it's called "Writer's Block"!)

Cannot understand the "I'm too old to wear it" comments; how on earth does it exclude any particular age group, or shape?

0DimSumMum0 · 31/08/2020 10:48

Honestly I think you could pull it off. It's not a dress for everyone but you are young and slim and will a bit of sass could looks great. I would not let anyone tell me what or what not to wear.

Ninkanink · 31/08/2020 10:52

I’d probably wear it, and I’m 44.

I’ve also got some curves which would be hinted at nicely without being too overt.

It’s not about age or size, necessarily. It’s about personality. It might not work on most people but OP might be one of those who can carry it off.

DarkmilkAddict · 31/08/2020 11:24

Agree personality is v important but with the best will in the world, as a petite pear shape, something that bold would always wear me

HK92 · 31/08/2020 11:27

I am a similar age to you and I love it!

Crystal87 · 31/08/2020 11:28

Well I wouldn't wear it myself but some people could pull it off.

Ninkanink · 31/08/2020 11:42

I know what you mean. My comment wasn’t meant to be a direct counterpoint to yours. 🙂

Anyway if OP loves it and feels good in it then she should definitely go ahead and wear it with pride.

dudsville · 31/08/2020 11:44

I think it's cute! It's casual and looks comfortable but can be funky as well.

dudsville · 31/08/2020 11:45

Ps, don't let other people's opinions ruin things for you. Some day you'll dead. Wear what makes you happy until hen.

Lamb1234 · 31/08/2020 11:50

If we all liked and wore the same things the world would look very boring. Wear what makes you happySmile.

DarkmilkAddict · 31/08/2020 11:50

What’s the fabric like? I think if it’s incredibly soft looking, that could make the whole thing seem more attractive in the flesh. The colours are quite muted. It’s growing on me now...

So overinvested

RudeAF · 31/08/2020 11:54

If you like it when it arrives it wear it but seeing as you haven’t even seen it in the flesh yet I wouldn’t protest too much to your husband! He’s not obliged to like it anyway just because you do.

FredaFox · 31/08/2020 11:55

Hideous sorry

TheBeesKnee · 31/08/2020 11:57

I like it!

Men tend to like anything which is obviously sexy, they have no sense of fashion, don't let him get to you Wink

Parkandride · 31/08/2020 11:58

I like it!

ploppieblopp · 31/08/2020 12:00

I like it, who asks a straight man for fashion advice? Have you seen how most of them dress themselves?! 😆

reservoircats · 31/08/2020 12:06

I like it OP. Where is it from?

Arthersleep · 31/08/2020 12:11

I really don't like it. however,my opinion or your husband's is irrelevant. If you feel good in it, then rock it!

Oliversmumsarmy · 31/08/2020 12:12

I think out of what you have bought the floral dress and the skirt look nice. Actually think dd has the skirt. Does it come with the “integrated” shorts?

FWIW dd has ordered a couple of times from Nastygal but when the stuff has come most if not all has been returned.

I actually think that rather that it being ok on someone young and slim I think it would look better on someone older and more plump.

It is shapeless and long sleeved which seems to be the fashion but I was around in the 70s when I thought rocking purple trousers with green flairs and an orange smock top was the bees knees or wearing a heavily accessorised black bin bag liner was the height of cool.

diddl · 31/08/2020 12:21

I don't like it & so wouldn't buy it.

You do so you have.

Not sure why your husband is a dickhead for not liking it-are we all dickheads for having different taste from you?

Also not sure why you are so invested in the dress that he has ruined it & made you sad!
