Matte red lipstick - blue tone

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive lipstick that is a classic red that leans cool?

Fed up of buying ones that translate as garish orange or pink red when on.

TIA

I highly recommend Fenty uncensored, but it's not that cheap. It looks great on and has good staying power.

RD15 · 21/08/2020 08:16

Mac Ruby woo or Russian red although not the cheapest I’m afraid.

areyoubeingserviced · 21/08/2020 08:17

Mac Ruby Woo is lovely, but is a bit pricey

Ratonastick · 21/08/2020 08:53

I’m a bit blue and didn’t get on with Ruby Woo, it looked a bit orange. I have the YSL 01 which works well. No sooner had I splashed out, my friend told me that Rimmel do a bright red that is perfect for blue tones. I don’t know the detail but has to be worth a look first!

BanjoStarz · 21/08/2020 09:19

I think it’s one of the Kate lipsticks from Rimmel that’s the Ruby Woo dupe, the texture is different though.

You can get Mac Ruby Woo as a mini though for about £10. They are small but to be honest, I’ve never managed to finish a bullet lipstick so I always buy the minis and coming up to holiday seasons it’s always in a kit with other products so you can save money there.

I find Ruby Woo is also quite a heavy wavy dry formula so lasts for ever.

I have a cheapest one that I wear with Barry M red liner underneath hang on

Surprisingly good

IVORNOIDEA · 21/08/2020 09:27

Thanks for these. I have tried Ruby Woo but found it reads a bit orange and garish on me. Wasn't keen on the formulation either.

Tried a couple from Make-up revolution recently which I had to buy blind and they are too orange.

I have Loreal Paris Cherry which looks like a berry red on me rather than a classic red- nice but not what I am looking for.

My perfect red from Next 'classic red' has been discontinued. I bought a bunch of them but they are all running out...

I’ve swatches my drugstore blue reds (The problem with working from home is your makeup is right thereSmile)

Left is Ruby Woo - which comes up a bit orange on my hand but is blue red in the lips.

Middle is Makeup Revolution Red Carpet red

Right is also Makeup Revolution, no name but a solid red bullet, I actually think it might be red carpet as above but a different finish.

I think the Makeup Revolution one is worth trying, I thought I had the Rimmel one but it’s not survived the lockdown clear out Shock

IVORNOIDEA · 21/08/2020 09:43

Thank-you will try red carpet and Rimmel :)

I'm an orange-red person, but if I want something bluer I love Lisa Eldridge Velvet Ribbon. I also like Smashbox Bing which is more of a true red.

IVORNOIDEA · 21/08/2020 09:55

Thanks Judy - I am a fussy mare - I will try those out once the samples are available again as I don't want to make another expensive mistake.

However my daughter is benefitting from quite a stash of my off casts
grin ...

Not expensive but my most recent disappointment was a collection of 5 reds from make-up revolution. Two were neon orange, two shocking pink and the solitary red glowed orange too. I think they busted into a Girls' World factory from the 1970s.....

Have you tried Revlon Cherries in the Snow? Or Crushed Rubies. They now comes in a matte version www.revlon.com/lips/lipstick/super-lustrous-the-luscious-mattes?shade=crushed-rubies

Ghost9525 · 21/08/2020 10:14

Huda el cinco de Mayo amazing cool classic red love it

Sakura7 · 21/08/2020 10:19

Mac Russian Red, you can get it in a mini size which is cheaper.

Twilightstarbright · 21/08/2020 11:12

I'm glad I'm.not the only one who found ruby woo to not be a blue red.

NomDePrune · 21/08/2020 11:27

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in Pioneer, 20.
Def not orangey and stays put. Tube though not a bullet. But no need to reapply, ever...

IVORNOIDEA · 21/08/2020 11:49

Where I have tried cherries in the snow and it looks bright fuchsia pink on me despite it looking red in the bullet. Haven't tried rubies one- will look into it :)

Nom I may give the Maybeline one a go although I have found the paint on ones can give me a mouth like a puckered goat's arse. Is it a nice formulation?

Ghost- not heard of that brand- will look into it

Sak will swatch that when possible

Thanks everyone :)

Isn't one of the Kate Moss lipsticks for Rimmel raved about, suppose to be the perfect red? I'll have a quick Google.

LemonBreeland · 21/08/2020 11:56

I bought that Revolution 5 pack and was disappointed. I like blue reds too. There are some good options mentioned here though.

BusterGonad · 21/08/2020 11:56

Kate Moss lipstick 001, a cherry red with a blue undertone. Apparently its the one she wore in the advert. Not matt, a cream finish.

Twilightstarbright · 21/08/2020 16:14

@NomDePrune thank you, it's brilliant!

NomDePrune · 21/08/2020 17:33

Glad you like it! I tried on my hand to remind myself and it stayed in through my shower. It has an oddly sweet smell but is not drying like Lipfinity (which I have used since it launched)

Aisforharlot · 21/08/2020 21:11

Sorry to butt in, but if I'm white and olive-y (yellow tones in skin, look shit in silver so only wear gold) what undertone of red should I be looking for?
