What can I look forward to wearing in the autumn?

I am trying to lose a bit of weight. Help me look forward to being a bit thinner and the cooler weather, which I prefer.
So far I am thinking about hi tops, jeans and a nice big jumper, not very imaginative.
Will there be nice fashion in the autumn? Or has covid buggered that too?

A/W 20 looking like masks will be ruling the runway. And streets, schools, shops and offices. I havent even thought of "normal" clothes!

I want to know too!

I can tell you what I'm looking forward to wearing from things I own already, my tartan wool skirt, plaid shirts, warmer colours (I tend to stick to cool tones but feel I can get away with mustard yellow, warm orange and olive green in the autumn,) my long black cloak and my black velvet jacket, and my lovely dresses (not all at the same time, obviously.) Hopefully I can get out and about a bit more in the autumn, all I've worn in the past few month is my work uniform and nighties!

homemadecommunistrussia · 13/08/2020 22:19

I love my check shirts, that's definitely something that looks better on a me when I am not so big!
Mine are mostly primark, where could I get some nicer ones?

Big loud collars
Slinky party dresses
Capes
Chunky sole boots
Hobo/half moon bags

Ooh, Doc Martens for me!

SpeedofaSloth · 14/08/2020 07:27

I am looking forward to my new big coat, for cold days at football. It isn't a fancy one but I like autumn and the heat has been a bit much this week.

Floisme · 14/08/2020 08:38

I bought September Vogue cos I really fancied drooling over some lovely clothes but it's turned into a Who's Who of activism. There was some really nice, slouchy tailoring, some plaid, a big Chanel advert featuring their classic boucle jackets and erm...that was it. It didn't even talk about what activists are wearing. Maybe they think I'm too careworn to think about clothes. They don't know me at all.

So - and before someone pops in to tell us all off for being fashion sheep - my own plan is to get back to wearing more colour. I said that last year and didn't manage it but this time I'm serious. I've also finally managed to track down some chunky ankle boots that are fractionally higher than usual, so I'm hoping to carry on wearing cropped trousers after the clocks go back.

Floisme · 14/08/2020 08:40

Oh and they had coats in Vogue too. Forgot about them. Yes they've noticed we all wear coats in winter.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/08/2020 10:08

In terms of things I own, I am excited about:

Teddy fur coats
Opaque tights
Leather skirts
Polo neck jumpers
DM monkey boots
Cords

I need to get some new heat tech stuff because I will be working from home most of the time and this is an old granite house so chilly. I also have my eye on a dark green cardi in Arket.

floisme I know I say this on every single thread about cold weather dressing, but get some knee-high socks for under cropped trews. As long as you have a colour contrast - I like charcoal grey with black trousers and boots - it totally works.

Floisme · 14/08/2020 10:16

Yeah Judy I don't mind having a streak of chunky sock on view but with all my boots up until now, that sliver had been a good couple of inches and I just didn't like the look. But this time I'm very hopeful that I've nailed it. Also a flash of sock could be a way of working in some colour. Fingers crossed!

homemadecommunistrussia · 14/08/2020 10:56

Maybe I need to shop for boots, mine are either too sensible- full on walking boots, or too casual- air force ones.

Op you have just made me feel that I need some new high tops to welcome Autumn!

I am going to get my hair properly cut and coloured in September - it has turned in to a piles of hay and is in danger of igniting in very hot weather. It is really not the humidity that has stopped me going up in a ball of flames...

MrsBobDylan · 14/08/2020 10:58

It is 'only' ...dog!

MrsBobDylan · 14/08/2020 10:59

Doh, ffs, not dog. My posts will be reported at this rate 😂

Mammyloveswine · 14/08/2020 11:03

I too am planning on being 2 stone down by my October/November...

I love a dress with block heeled boots and tights, skinny jeans with cute jumpers and converse, denim shirts with check shirts, long sleeved tunic dresses with black tights and over the knee boots...

Hating dressing for summer with none of my clothes fitting!! 😭😭😭

Lucked · 14/08/2020 11:20

I love merino and cashmere. Also skirts that aren’t super long midi as I can wear tights. Boots, leather jackets (and skirts). I have a soft spot for the preppy look so love trousers and skirts with a check which always feels autumnal.

This thread reminds me I need new Chelsea boots.

Lucked · 14/08/2020 11:21

Oh and my duffle coat. I love it so much.

EraOfTheGrey · 14/08/2020 12:59

I'm looking forward to wearing my new Solovair astronaut boots. I'll be wearing them with cropped trousers and cosy socks. I'm currently knitting a huge wool wrap and it'll be finished in time for autumn. Midi dresses and chunky jumpers. I've also knitted some wrist warmers and fingerless gloves.

Full on cat lady without the smell, hair or actual cats.

homemadecommunistrussia · 14/08/2020 14:01

Those astronaut boots look lovely, but probably too narrow for me.

OP I got mine from TU, I have a few pure cotton ones, but the rest are viscose, which I prefer because they feel softer to me. I bought my first ones in 2014 and they've lasted well. New Look and Peacocks have done some nice ones in the past as well, so try looking there.

Which reminds me of my much loved faux leather skirts which are also TU and were also purchased in 2014, that was a good year clothes wise for me (as was 2017, see the flared sleeves trend.) I'll be getting out the velvet dresses with flared sleeves again as well, and my pointy toed ankle boots (although I need a new pair or too because the ones I've been wearing for the past few years are wearing out.)

ChippyTea16 · 16/08/2020 02:44

I love autumn fashion too! I’m looking forward to wearing:

-black and white check dress with a thin roll neck top, tights and ankle boots
-tartan skirt and roll neck jumper
-black jeans and tan teddy coat/fleece with chunky hiking boots
-red tartan short sleeve dress with tights and boots
-plaid shirt with black jeggings and chunky boots
-black jeans with oversized cream fluffy rollneck jumper (in fact any of my big cosy jumpers!)
-tan cord pencil skirt with black rollneck jumper
-various check mini skirts with jumpers tights and boots

Plus woolly hats and blankets scarves. Love autumn it’s my fave time of year and fave clothes to wear!

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 17/08/2020 16:39

Does anyone know what the key trends for AW 20 are supposed to be? I've not been near a real shop yet and could do with some pointers.

For my personal shopping for AW, I really need some easy to walk in black boots. Not sure what style we are all aiming for. Also a new wool coat when the weather turns, and a navy thin jumper for layering ,as the moths got at my lovely one that's lasted me years. (Fluttery fuckers)

Do we think the relaxed and comfy clothing style that lockdown brought in will continue?
