Can I use hairspray on a 5 year old?

I have used silvikrin maximum hold hairspray on DD5 a few times. Is it ok to use it everyday (school) on her hair to keep the curls in?
She sleeps with curlformers in so no heat is used on her hair. I also wash it every other day with a rinse with water in between so the spray will be washed off.
If not are there any child friendly hair sprays that keep the curls in place?

I wouldn't, especially every day. It can dry out and damage your hair.

Why does a 5 year old need to sleep with curl formers in and have hairspray every day just for school? She's a small child, just let her be!

AuntieMarys · 12/08/2020 10:31

Yes, why does she need curls? Ridiculous.

Knocka · 12/08/2020 10:34

Seriously?

Glitterbiscuits · 12/08/2020 10:39

Is this a real child or a doll?

It's not dress up!

optimisticpessimist01 · 12/08/2020 10:45

She's 5. Why are you bothered about her having perfect curls? You're encouraging esteem problems when she's older

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 12/08/2020 10:52

Poor girl, sleeping with curlformers in can’t be comfortable and breathing in hairspray every day definitely won’t be good for her, plus it’ll be damaging her hair

LaTomatina · 12/08/2020 10:59

I often put hairspray on my kids for school because it seems to deter headlice as well as the dedicated headlice deterant spray, but costs a lot less.

namesnamesnamesnames · 12/08/2020 10:59

Does she have curly hair that you're trying to control? If so, there are other ways to do this that won't need spray and won't be uncomfortable to sleep. Look into curly girl routine for children for a start. If you're just trying to style to be pretty, no need at all.

Fatted · 12/08/2020 11:03

Instead of using hair spray, use something like mousse, gel or curl creme when it is wet before you put the curl former in at night.

I put gel on my 5YOs hair. It is naturally curly and the gel smooths it down. I have grown up with curly hair, I wish my mum had helped me with managing it from an early age, instead of letting it go natural (ie tatty and scruffy).

????????????????

Are you Shirley Temple’s mother or something?

You do realise that it’s not normal to make your child have her hair curled every other day don’t you?

The poor child.

I'm about funny about hairspray, I keep thinking breathing in those chemicals can't be good for anyone, especially a child. Can she sleep in plaits then have soft waves rather than cultured curls?

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 12/08/2020 11:27

I'd see this as teaching your daughter that it's more important to be pretty than to be comfortable. Not sure that's a great message.

LittleBearPad · 12/08/2020 11:29

I was going to say yes - DD had it for a ballet exam to keep her bun immaculate. But everyday! Why does she need curls

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/08/2020 11:29

I think this is true. I used to wear hair spray as a teacher and didn't catch them.

I can't understand why a five year old needs to wear curlers, though, or why she would have hair spray to keep the curls in. Crazy.

Or Violet Elizabeth Bott's?

Op she’s five, making her sleep in curlers and setting her hair is really odd
Wash her hair, dry it, brush it. Job done. Don’t be styling it. She can decide to do that herself when she hits the Tweenies. Till then let her be a kid.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 12/08/2020 12:21

Crikey Im lucky to get a brush through my five year olds hair. Ponytail or plait is about as good as it gets

@CaptainMyCaptain She has naturally curly hair that is really messy. Using the curlformers makes it a lot neater.
She just has them on the ends of her hair (from ears downwards) so they do not reach her scalp so it is not uncomfortable to sleep with.

@heevon I'm still not getting it I'm afraid. Curlers on a five year is beyond my (very long) experience. My daughter has afro hair and I braided it when she was little to keep it tidy and prevent it from matting but making a little girl sleep in curlers seems cruel.

TheBlueStocking · 12/08/2020 13:23

I don't see the problem with it

Soubriquet · 12/08/2020 13:24

I use hairspray in dd’s hair for things like ballet but I wouldn’t use it everyday

NameChange84 · 12/08/2020 13:26

I’m mixed race and my hair was a nightmare of frizzy corkscrew curls as a child.

My mum just plaited it. There’s no way I’d have been happy with having it washed and curlers put in every other day and having to sleep with them in.
