Can I use hairspray on a 5 year old?

I have used silvikrin maximum hold hairspray on DD5 a few times. Is it ok to use it everyday (school) on her hair to keep the curls in?
She sleeps with curlformers in so no heat is used on her hair. I also wash it every other day with a rinse with water in between so the spray will be washed off.
If not are there any child friendly hair sprays that keep the curls in place?

If she has naturally curly hair that is messy then just stick it in a ponytail for school!

Notarealmum · 13/08/2020 05:22

Apologies, Hadn’t read on to the bit about her being a model when I mentioned beauty pageants.....

GoshHashana · 13/08/2020 06:26

Your poor DD!

midnightstar66 · 13/08/2020 06:54

Op my dd has incredibly curly hair. I just scrape it back when damp. No need for uncomfortable curlers or hair spray

Sirzy · 13/08/2020 06:59
**@Bluntness100* @netflixismysidehustle* She has been a child model since age 2 so she is more aware of how she looks than other children her age are.

@FelicityPike I find that plaiting it makes it even messier the next morning. I thought another poster was talking about afro style braids/curls rather than plaits.

@Shinygreenelephant Thanks I will try the mousse.
Wow. Surely this is all the more reason to move the focus away from how she looks rather than focus on it more?

midnightstar66 · 13/08/2020 07:03

*Really silky hair won't stay in plaits, it just slips out as you try and plait it.

Although if the hair was damp and moussed it might work.*

Of course you can plait silky hair, you just use a different technique or plait type. however OP's hair is curly so I don't think the comment is relevant.

Greenglassteacup · 13/08/2020 07:06

Poor kid

GertiMJN · 13/08/2020 07:14

You are immersed in the modelling business and have regular contact with professional hair stylists, but are asking for advice here ...?

Sootikinstew · 13/08/2020 07:19

Op I think your getting a really unfair kicking on here.

All families are different, there is nothing wrong with teaching your children to look their best if that's the sort of family you are.

There is also nothing wrong with hairspray.

Back off folks.

SnugglySnerd · 13/08/2020 07:22

Yes for her dance show I did. Otherwise I wouldn't but I do like the idea of it as a cheap nit deterrent!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 13/08/2020 07:35

To be fair, child model or not some children do go through a stage of hating messy and dirty.

I do think the op is getting a bit of a bashing here. It may not be agreeable but we do need child models to sell children's clothes...

Lucindainthesky · 13/08/2020 08:12

I highly doubt the child is modelling every day though and it would be a strange retailer who wanted the image to be a child with contrived hairsprayed ringlets. I would have thought natural messy curly hair would be a far more desirable look for a child model. Perhaps I'm thinking Boden rather than beauty pageant though

heevon · 13/08/2020 09:48

@GertiMJN Her hairdresser says the hairspray is fine everyday as long as I brush it out and wash it off properly. I do not use it on her scalp just the ends.
I thought that everyday was a bit drying though so I wanted to know other parents' opinions.

heevon · 13/08/2020 09:50

@Lucindainthesky No she probably has a photoshoot once a week or so. She models for kids fancy dress brands and kids cosmetics rather than regular clothes.

My DS has become obsessed with self grooming. He loves the barbershop and the products, he loves washing his hands and face and is very proud of his hair. Likes making himself look nice and choosing his outfits. Hates being dirty etc. Will tell me when he wants his nails cut before I think they need doing even. Gets me to check his ears for wax etc. He's 3 for context

JadesRollerDisco · 13/08/2020 09:52

Not a model, and doesn't come from anywhere else. It's just who he is. His sister is the absolute and complete opposite

EleanorOalike · 13/08/2020 10:03

Kids Cosmetics?!

What “Cosmetics” do 5 year olds need?

LittleBearPad · 13/08/2020 10:28

Please tell me you mean face paint when you say kids cosmetics?

LittleBearPad · 13/08/2020 10:30

I googled and kids cosmetics are a thing - no wonder childhood is fucked

heevon · 13/08/2020 10:34

@LittleBearPad @EleanorOalike Like kids makeup for play and bath/shower products. Not kids foundation or anythingGrin

Lucindainthesky · 13/08/2020 10:44

Honestly OP the things you are doing are not helping her hair if it's naturally curly. How curly is it?

Wash once a week. Experiment with just washing with conditioner and/or using products with no sulfates.

Use a microfiber towel or tshirt after washing to eliminate frizz

Use a leave in conditioner and maybe a lightweight hair oil

Don't brush it

Don't use hairspray

Plait it at night or she can sleep with it in a pineapple if she's able

Try these things and it will be less messy.

Ratbagratty · 13/08/2020 10:45

Our primary school has a no hair spray policy, they say it is an allergen and damaging lungs with long term use and It also attracts wasps.

I have been recommended a tea tree spray to keep live at bay, but not sure of that will help with curls.

Cheeseybites · 13/08/2020 10:48

My ds did some modelling as a small.child, when I used to go to the auditions I came across children aged 5 to 7 and some of them were so very aware of how they looked and spoke and moved that it scared me.
My ds only did it for a year, I decided I'd rather not his head was that fucked up as a child and for him to have a normal happy childhood.
Not saying every child would be like that.

MsSquiz · 13/08/2020 10:53

Inhaling hairspray everyday doesn't sound healthy! Please don't use it everyday, fine to use a little for special occasions

Angelina82 · 13/08/2020 10:58

I wouldn’t use hairspray on my own (messy) hair every day, let alone on a small child
(ever) Why are you so worried about what your daughter’s hair looks like? Aren’t kids supposed to tie their hair up for school anyway?
