Can I use hairspray on a 5 year old?

heevon · 12/08/2020 10:14

I have used silvikrin maximum hold hairspray on DD5 a few times. Is it ok to use it everyday (school) on her hair to keep the curls in?
She sleeps with curlformers in so no heat is used on her hair. I also wash it every other day with a rinse with water in between so the spray will be washed off.
If not are there any child friendly hair sprays that keep the curls in place?

My mum would often do my hair like these for hairstyles for school. There’s loads of information out there on YouTube for easy school hairstyles for curly haired children that don’t involve going to extremes.

Bluntness100 · 12/08/2020 13:40

Op do you sleep in curlers every night? I assure you even at the ends it’s a ball ache, so what if her hair is messy curls. It’s fine. She’s tiny,

ChrisPriss · 12/08/2020 13:43

I'm in my sixties and remember my mother making me sleep in curlers (not soft ones in those days) and home perming my hair as a child. Please don't mess with your child's hair, or she'll have problems with it all her life as a result.

Wigglegiggle0520 · 12/08/2020 13:49

Plait it and follow the curly girl method. The poor child.

Unless absolutely necessary, there is no need for any child to be around chemical sprays.

HTH.

heevon · 12/08/2020 13:55

@Bluntness100 Yes I do- only at the ends though. I can assure you it is quite comfortable as curlformers are quite soft (DD has the shorter ones in).

@NameChange84 Thanks I will look into youtube videos. It will be quite hard as we are East Asian so Afro hairstyles will not work for us.

OP posts:
heevon · 12/08/2020 13:59

@CaptainMyCaptain Braiding is not an option for us as we are East Asian- thanks for the suggestion though :)
DD prefers her hair with the curlers as she hates having messy hair too. The ones we use are very soft so she says that it doesn't bother her at all.
It is just keeping them in that is hard😔

Like I said there are LOADS of hairstyles for curly girls. Not just Afro hair.

heevon · 12/08/2020 14:00

@NameChange84 Ah ok thanksGrin

but she's FIVE, she shouldn't be worrying about how she looks.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 12/08/2020 15:09

She sleeps with curlformers in

I’ve just had to google these as I didn’t know what they looked like. Why does she care if her hair is ‘messy’? I think she must be getting the message from you or someone else that her hair is messy and that’s a bad thing. I doubt she ever said ‘mum my hair is messy, can I sleep with curlformers in?’
And hairspray? Confused I can’t imagine putting so much effort into a 5 year olds hair so that it looks neat.

Soubriquet · 12/08/2020 15:12

Those curlformers don’t look that bad actually

I was picturing the hard rolled tubes!

nachthexe · 12/08/2020 15:17

Honestly, with mine we either plaited or cut it short. We’ve used hairspray loads of times, but for dance and stage (and from loads younger) but every day for school? No.
I can’t quite picture what sort of hair can use curlformers but not plait, but there has to be a solution that doesn’t involve teaching a 5yo that it’s essential she looks pretty and that it’s normal to put curlers in before bed as a result.

Shinygreenelephant · 12/08/2020 15:19

I used it from age 3 for ballet exams and recitals, so 2-3 times a year. Every day it will ruin her hair. Just use mousse, keep it braided, stop worrying so much about her looking perfect. My oldest had crazy messy curls when she was little and putting curlers in wouldnt have entered my head

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 12/08/2020 15:23

If she has curly hair she doesn't need curlers just the correct care for her hair type. Search curl types they range from wavy to coiled and to get the best you need to learn what her hair type is and go from there. There is a wealth of resources for methods and products etc.

FelicityPike · 12/08/2020 15:41

Why can’t you plait East-Asian hair?

Lucindainthesky · 12/08/2020 15:57

Washing curly hair every other day will be drying it out and not helping.

Please google curly hair methods for children, I have curly hair as does DD and your regime sounds insane.

Bluntness100 · 12/08/2020 16:26

Op I’m sorry but a five year old wouldn’t give a shit about this unless taught to. That’s a learned behaviour.

But it’s more than that, you’re even spraying it so her curls stay in all day. Let her be a kid, she doesn’t need to sleep in rollers or have her hair styled and sprayed every day at five.

netflixismysidehustle · 12/08/2020 16:40

Fucking hell

She's FIVE and has learned from you that her hair isn't "good enough " (messy) and sleeps in curlformers. Poor girl Sad

KitchenConfidential · 12/08/2020 16:45

The Victoria era called and want their curling rags back!

LittleBearPad · 12/08/2020 16:48

OP you do need to think about the messages you’ve given your daughter and her hair.

hellsbellsmelons · 12/08/2020 17:01

Why can’t you plait East-Asian hair?
Indeed! Very odd statement to make.

I have curly hair and I never need hairspray (unless it's show week of course)
I certainly don't wash it every other day.
That is excessive for a 5YO!
Mine gets done once a week.

I also want to know why a 5YO is worried about messy hair?
Who give a flying fig?
Let her be a little girl.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 12/08/2020 17:17

Google the curly girl method! Silk/satin pillowcases can stop it getting matted too. Teach her to look after her natural hair and work with it rather than hating it and working against it!

heevon · 12/08/2020 17:34

@Bluntness100 @netflixismysidehustle She has been a child model since age 2 so she is more aware of how she looks than other children her age are.

@FelicityPike I find that plaiting it makes it even messier the next morning. I thought another poster was talking about afro style braids/curls rather than plaits.

@Shinygreenelephant Thanks I will try the mousse.

And that doesn't strike you as something you should work on mitigating?

FelicityPike · 12/08/2020 18:21

Wow that’s sad, really sad.
