Curly girl method curl hold for fine wavy hair

I started the CGM nearly 2 weeks ago thanks to MN. I'm loving it so far but need to tweak my products.

I'm happy with my co-wash/deep conditioner/plopping.

It's the product to hold my curls/waves that I'm struggling with.

I was using Boots gel which was easy to use and kept my waves for 3 days but it came at a price as it is very drying on my hair and made my hair feel like straw.

Yesterday I used just the Noughty Wave Hello Curl Taming Cream on it's own instead of then applying the gel. This left my hair lovely and soft but with less definition and today the waves have pretty much fallen out.

I like to scrunch the crunch but I want soft hair more and I'm wondering if all products that produce a crunch will do this to my hair?

Does anyone have any product suggestions for fine and wavy hair? I can't use anything too heavy.

Shamelessly placemarking!

raspberryraindrops · 09/08/2020 10:43

@Snowdrop30 Grin I've googled and googled but can't quite find what I'm looking for.

Try the flaxseed gel recipe

Umberto Giannini curl jelly. Use it on very wet hair, allow to dry and then scrunch. Leaves hair very soft.

Trepadora Acai Berry gel curl fix, meets CGM criteria. Apply to sopping wet hair and etc.
It's light so is good for finer hair.

AnnaMagnani · 09/08/2020 11:27

Boucleme gel. Or Only Curls Gel.

I have fine wavy hair and TBH you won't get 3 days of curl + soft hair, you just don't have that hair.

I like a stronger gel to keep the curls in, as you think you need light but with fine hair without a strong hold everything just falls out quickly, and these are probably my favourites but fine wavy hair + CG is not a match made in heaven. Without a shampoo ( I do stick to SLS free) you easily get a lot of build up.

Am currently considering returning to my youth and using mousse again after being v impressed at the hairdressers.

raspberryraindrops · 10/08/2020 09:27

Yes I definitely think I will need some kind of gel or I might try a mousse. I'm not getting volume either with just the curl cream.

I hope I find my holy grail of products soon because this is costing me a fortune so far Grin

I think volume is the holy grail for fine hair Smile I can get lots of curl but not necessarily volume.

Hairdresser used mousse and that had loads of volume AND hold.

raspberryraindrops · 10/08/2020 10:29

That sounds very promising!

I use Syoss Curl Control mousse and LA gel with fine wavy and it gives me a lot of volume and hold. It is soft once I scrunch out the crunch on the first day, not so much for subsequent days.

teddybearsbear · 11/08/2020 07:21

I have the same hair type as you and have been cg for about three months now. The best combination I have found so far is to use cantu custard followed by Superdrug mousse the one in the purple can

It gives great hold but my hair is really soft after scrunching

JaceLancs · 11/08/2020 08:58

Osis curl honey cream

Pandapotato · 11/08/2020 17:56

Boots curl mousse. It’s about £1 and it’s in a pink can.
Honestly, turns my fine & frizzy waves into lovely, voluminous beach vibe ones.

raspberryraindrops · 11/08/2020 20:33

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will work my way through them until I find the right combo!

I second the Osis Curl Honey suggestion. I bought it after seeing it recommended in here and it is very good at encouraging and holding curl in my thick, wavy and prone to frizz hair.

JaceLancs · 12/08/2020 09:18

Osis twin curl cream was even better but sadly discontinued
Snap it up if you ever see any old stock

QueenCT · 12/08/2020 13:12

The curl honey isn't CG though, it's loaded with silicone

Whyhellodaffodil · 12/08/2020 20:43

Agree - you need a gel after the curl creme, then once totally dry scrunch it out, it holds the curl much more than the creme on its own. I like a shea moisture one but my hair is curlier than yours by the sounds. Hope you find something that works for you!

MotherofPearl · 12/08/2020 21:06

I use the Sebastian Thickefy Mousse on my hair. It gives volume and does hold waves to some extent - I use big-barrelled tongs to get waves which usually last 2-3 days. Though not in the current heat and humidity.

raspberryraindrops · 14/08/2020 21:51

When I posted this I was waiting for a delivery of Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly and also the Curl Whip Mousse. The jelly definitely made my hair softer but, for the first since doing the CGM, my hair is practically straight this evening. I used the Noughty Wave Hello cream as well. My hair was softer but still felt a bit dry, there was much less frizz. I did a deep condition beforehand. The waves were quite good.

I tried the mousse and jelly the other day but it felt dry and almost straw like as if there was residue. I presumed from the mousse?

Normally I do my wash and style the night before as I'm working the next day so I'll try the cream and mousse tomorrow and diffuse as I have more time and see how that goes. If it doesn't work out I think I'll need to go back to some form of gel. The boots one gave great hold but left my hair very dry and frizzy. It felt horrible, like straw.

Same problem here! I've been using Shea moisture curl & style milk, and while it's nice and moisturising it doesn't hold enough, for me so I'll probably not repurchase. I also have Aveda wave enhancer but it's got silicones in it and feels plasticky so I haven't used it much. It did give me nice waves though. suspect Aveda is massively overrated

I haven't come across a gel that doesn't dry my hair out yet, or a mousse that doesn't stink to high heaven, so keeping my eye on this thread!

marriednotdead · 15/08/2020 05:12

It’s not strictly CG but I have fine frizz prone curls that are happiest with Palmers olive oil shampoo and conditioner. Tried the co wash but not effective enough for me.

Also use the leave in conditioner spray from the same range daily but the game changer is Sebastian whipped creme- nothing like it for curl definition after washing and it smells divine. Expensive but worth it, been using it for years and on the rare occasion I’ve run out, the difference is dramatic!

raspberryraindrops · 15/08/2020 08:11

After posting I ordered the Boucleme gel. It's actually starting to stress me out! I saw a woman yesterday with gorgeous soft long waves and if I hadn't been on a bus seeing her in the pub I would have asked her how she did it!

My hair is the greasiest it's been too. I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

Bumble and Bumble curl defining creme is what works for me and I have similar fine hair. You don’t need to use much so it lasts ages.

Dingdong99 · 15/08/2020 08:18

I have hair like this

I'm not doing CGM (tried a couple of times but couldn't figure it out!) but the best product I've found is Tigi Curls Rock

Always on the look out for a wonder product tho!!
