Itchy not flakey scalp recommendations?

Something is making me itch Confused

We haven't changed washing powder and I'm using the same products as always. I've developed a rash on my body, particularly on my neck which is drying up. It's driving me mad, especially at night.

Our local pharmacy is closed for lunch now, later today I'm going to get some Betnovate cream for my body.

I'm taking antihistamines yet still I itch!

My scalp is itching too, I don't have any dandruff.

What's the best product you've found to ease an itchy scalp? If you know of anything that stops your body from itching that would be helpful too.

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince
I try to dry my hair too. My hairdresser said if you leave your hair wet it's the perfect damp environment for the scalp to develop a fungal infection (if you're prone to this).

I had an itchy and flaky scalp some years ago and tried Philip Kingsley scalp treatment for itchy flaky scalps. It worked immediately and I was very impressed. Both the flakes and itching stopped quickly and I used it after washing my hair if my scalp felt itchy but also, if necessary, in-between. I keep a bottle in my bathroom cabinet to use when needed. I still have and use their after sun scalp mask (not sure if they still sell this) which I find soothing and use from time to time when my scalp feels uncomfortable.

Allergenics works really well if you can find it in stock here

AlexisOnFire · 31/07/2020 23:07

veryverytiredmummy RTFT. It's not nits.

Following a blood test on Thursday I spoke to my GP this morning. It seems there's a problem with my liver. Possibly gallbladder. I'm in hospital overnight now, I've had more tests and I'm waiting for the results hopefully over the weekend.

Whatever is going through the drip is helping and they are applying steroid cream regularly. I'm miserable in here.

As per the thread title I didn't have any flaking, just itching and a rash. As it's turned out this isn't a S&B question, it should have been in Health. I didn't know that when I first posted.

Whatever happens here I will try some of the suggestions from this thread. Thanks everyone.

Neutrogena the brown one - coal tar?

Mere1 · 01/08/2020 09:11

Try Nizoral shampoo. It works.

leannetta · 01/08/2020 10:01

Well at least they're getting you seen straight away! Hopefully get it all sorted. 😊

Todaywewilldobetter · 01/08/2020 12:54

Oh gosh. Hope it gets sorted quickly. Flowers

Wishing you a speedy recovery AlexisOnFire!

I also use the Head and Shoulders for itchy scalp, interspersed with old fashioned shampoo soap (block). What really made a difference was completely stopping use of hair products. I now use a tiny amount of hair oil rubbed into ends and smoothed over while the hair is wet. The condition of my hair has also improved greatly. Hair products were making it drier. I also use conditioner every 3-4 weeks as it seems to not need it (oil has probably helped out)

I had 'scalp on fire ' level itchiness last week and put the moogoo scalp cream on overnight, amazing stuff it was fine by the morning and still good 2 days later

Oh I wish they would stop rattling those trollies around and doing so many obs. It's ok, I know that it's essential and I'm just being grumpy but I feel ok really. Not great but ok. I miss DH too.

Thanks for all your well wishes Thanks it seems I have a bile leak. More tests tomorrow.

As this thread has gone South, or at least my situation has can I open up the conversation for all good product recommendations? Especially to help with all over itching and products that are good in hospital.

If no-one picks this up I'll start a new S&B thread.

Sorry to disappoint but still nothing to report on the nits front either Smile though now I'm in here I could catch nits. So there's still hope.

I used the Roche Posay Lipikar Surgras range for extremely itchy pregnancy bump. Happy to report no stretch marks :) We used Weleda baby range on DD’s eczema as was looking for a calendula based cream and then moved on to Spectro. Not sure if any of these will be relevant to your condition though. Get well soon xxx

AlexisOnFire · 02/08/2020 03:17

mamakoukla I love La Roche Posay products. I'll take a look because my lower legs and arms are itchy with no rash Thanks

From what you describe, with the liver being involved, I am not sure whether a moisturizer will reduce itch as it’s not quite dry skin. It will help maintain a healthy though. Maybe pop over to general health section? Hope you get relief soon!

This brief overview came out of a UK based group - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4439832/

Todaywewilldobetter · 02/08/2020 09:16

Hurry up and catch those nits, for goodness sake! Grin

My husband swears by talc to stop itching. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Beautiful3 · 02/08/2020 09:20

I had an itchy scalp that would not go away. I tried a medicated shampo, that dead sea shampoo, head and shoulders, balsam tea tree shampoo and finally rubbing olive oil in my scalp. Nothing worked until I tried ginger shampoo from the body shop. Its marvellous stuff, I've never had an itchy scalp since.

Beautiful3 · 02/08/2020 09:23

Just read your update op. I'm sorry to hear you're now in hospital. Keep us updated. Hope you feel better soon my lovely. Flowers

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/08/2020 09:35

Marking place because I’ve had this for a while, TGel shampoo not touching it. Bloods have come back normal, wish I had an answer. Good luck OP.

AlexisOnFire · 02/08/2020 13:33

Moisturiser won't do it, I agree mamakoukla. I don't know whether you've read my updates but I'm in hospital now and being given topical and oral steroids in addition to other things.

The problem seems to be my liver.

Although I am itching all over the rash is only bad from my knees upwards this has worsened since I first started to itch last week.

My lower legs itch too but there isn't a rash there and atm the Drs are happy for me to use moisturiser to keep my legs and feet cool and stop the itching.

OP posts:
MaosChaos · 02/08/2020 13:43

Do we need to discuss what moisturiser is good?
I'm liking the L'Occitaine Supple Almond oil today.

Hope things improve for you soon.

AlexisOnFire · 02/08/2020 14:46

We can talk about whatever S&B thing you like MaosChaos Smile
Selfishly, anything to take my mind off the itching and my general grumpiness!

In normal circumstances I love L'Occitane Almond oil shower gel, it's the best stuff for shaving my legs. I've got a L'Occitane gift pack of hand cream minis at home. I'll ask DH to bring them over. I've booked him a visiting slot for later.

Depending on the test results it looks like I'll be having an operation this coming week. I won't be able to get my front torso wet.
How should I wash myself?

OP posts:
Todaywewilldobetter · 02/08/2020 16:13

Ooh if you've plenty phone charge, I seem to remember some heated MN debates about strip washes! Have a search back!

Should pass some time and induce some eye rolling Grin

AlexisOnFire · 02/08/2020 17:56

Right. I'm off to have a laugh at strip washing debates.

My phone is plugged in and my iPad. I've got plenty of charge and credit.

Thank you Thanks
