Is Tropic an mlm? Am tempted to buy!

A friend recently became a Tropic ambassador and I dutifully joined her group not intending to take much interest. But I invited a couple of other peeps to join (am a supportive friend!) and received a free lip balm for my efforts. And it's gorgeous! And my friend's skin looks great and I'm actually now really tempted to treat myself to a couple of products.

Does anyone know if this is a genuine company? Really hoping it's not another mlm.

It very much is.

wizzywig · 23/07/2020 23:03

Yeah its an mlm

thisislovelyme · 23/07/2020 23:06

Oh no! Gutted for my friend. The products look genuinely good and she's working so hard making videos etc. She says it was started by a past winner of The Apprentice - I thought this might mean it is possibly genuine. Are you sure? I suppose I shouldn't buy t

I believe the products are awesome however.

thisislovelyme · 23/07/2020 23:08

So if the products are good the fact it's an mlm shouldn't put me off should it? Ethical dilemma...

Oh I remember her from The Apprentice, she's done well! Yep, it's an MLM though, so proceed with caution!

Skybooks · 23/07/2020 23:10

I love the products but I also dont hate all MLMs.

SquigglePigs · 23/07/2020 23:14

The products are excellent. I buy through a friend of a friend. She's not pushy, just texts me once a month or so to ask if I need anything. I think if she was pushy it would have put me off.

DrDetriment · 23/07/2020 23:16

I hate the idea of MLMs but some of the products are great. Neal's Yard operates as an MLM but with no minimum sales etc and you just get 25% off everything when you sign up as a distributor. I use the products and do it just to get the discount. I've never recruited anyone.

FredaFox · 23/07/2020 23:22

Yes it is, like a pp says it was started by one of the women from the apprentice
Think Alan sugar invested in her

Cherrypie32 · 23/07/2020 23:31

Being a mlm wouldn’t put me off, a pushy salesperson would and unfortunately that’s what tends to happen to the people who sign up to sell. If your friends not going to be like that with you then go ahead and support her, why not? The products do look lovely.

CharlOtteSometime · 24/07/2020 00:03

These companies are all the same and they all exploit women. Tropic is absolutely no different. Your friend won't be making any money and she will be purchasing the products herself to hit various targets - no matter what she may try and tell you otherwise

Just steer clear and don't be a 'supportive friend' by harassing other people to join her group

Railingsohno · 24/07/2020 01:23

I think it is but the products are lovely and it’s very eco conscious.

GrimDamnFanjo · 24/07/2020 01:27

Mlm but positions itself as more ethical in both products and the compensation scheme.
There's a breakdown of it on the Talented Ladies blog iirc which Susie Ma engaged with.

EachandEveryone · 24/07/2020 12:59

I know three people selling for them now. I find it really expensive.

LilyLolo81 · 24/07/2020 14:13

Ex tropic ambassador here (naively believed the ‘not really an mlm’ they push, it totally is one though). Products are nice but super expensive and you can find products that are just as good (if not better) for much cheaper in Holland and Barretts and other high street stores. They’re not as pushy as other mlms as there’s no real enforced targets but the products are definitely not worth the price tag and your friend will be making next to nothing unless she has hundreds of people buying from her and recruits lots of other people to her team Confused I now feel incredibly embarrassed I got sucked in but 🤷‍♀️

Jerble · 24/07/2020 14:25

The products I’ve tried have been lovely but not good value for money at all. Again, I only bought as wanted to support my friend but not sure I’ll be buying again. Too expensive for what it is.

KANNET · 24/07/2020 14:30

So I just googled tropic out of interest. You can buy the products online. What is the point of a sales person

thisislovelyme · 25/07/2020 07:01

I read the talented ladies blog about Tropic - really interesting, detailed, balanced account - and they conclude that it is an mlm but with a few key differences which make it far more ethical than most MLMs.

OP posts:
CodenameVillanelle · 25/07/2020 07:06

If your friend is working her guts out to make very little money like in all MLMs then it's not ethical. By all means buy something if you really want to but don't kid yourself that you're supporting your friend - the sooner she realises she's being exploited and leaves the better.

SebandAlice · 25/07/2020 07:17

I saw on their website they are giving 10% of their profits to Mermaids. No thanks.

Needmoremummyjuice · 25/07/2020 08:10

The products are nice but I think very overpriced. You can get equally good for a much better price IMO.

lockdownalli · 25/07/2020 12:37

I love the products and have an ambassador friend who makes a very good living out of it.

I don't think all MLMs are the same and Tropic seems pretty decent to me.

Mrsjayy · 25/07/2020 12:41

My friend is a beautician and swears by tropic she used it before armageddon for facials and herself I think of it is as a fancy pants Avon .

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/07/2020 12:43

Its possible to be an mlm and have good products. The problem is even without the target hitting or pressure to keep levels of stock that some have its still very hard for the sales people to make a decent wage while the company owner always reaps the rewards of any tiny sale they make. It means the business owner makes profit without having to properly employ people, pay holiday or sick leave etc. I think its a shitty way to treat people making you money and thats why I wont buy MLM if any kind anymore
