Need a product to scrunch into my natural curly hair to get rid of fuzz??

Wonderingwhyme · 05/07/2020 16:59

My hair is naturally quite curly but very frizzy. Not tight curls, quite loose. My hair is dry and I’m trying to get it into a better condition with hair masks etc. I want to not dry and straighten my hair as much (currently every day). I don’t do the curly girl method as it looks awful so please don’t suggest it. I just want a product I can scrunch in when it’s wet to define the curls and get rid of fuzz but when I can get rid of fuzz it’s just a sticky, crunchy mess!! Can anyone recommend a specific product for this please?

Superdrug active leave in conditioner. Spray in, finger your curls into shape, then allow to dry naturally.

doodlejump1980 · 05/07/2020 17:05

I use this stuff. It’s brilliant. Not greasy, crispy and nicely defines my curls. I use it on towel-dried hair and diffuse dry. Also not a fan of curly girl!

I have been using Garnier Hair Food, Lidl have it on offer atm, £3.49 a tub. It has changed my wavy hair from Hagrid to beach waves 😁

salbodoodlecat · 05/07/2020 17:07

I follow the curly girl method and love it. The trick is to apply mousse and/or gel to wet hair. Then form a 'cast'. This will make it very crunchy. Allow it to dry completely and the "scrunch ouf the crunch". So underneath are the curls. Curly girl method means finding products that have no sulphates no silicones and no parabens. I wash my hair using conditioner instead of shampoo.

salbodoodlecat · 05/07/2020 17:08

Sorry I know you said not to suggest the curly girl method.

Wonderingwhyme · 05/07/2020 17:10

Thanks will have a look at this products, I haven’t tried them. I bought some 97% natural spray In a grey bottle that’s meant to specifically be what I want according to all the reviews but I don’t really rate it.

Your hair sounds vaguely like mine. I also find a lot of products sticky/greasy/crunchy. This Mixed Chicks leave-in product works well for me but is annoyingly expensive. There must be something similar cheaper but trial and error takes so long...
www.amazon.co.uk/Mixed-Chicks-Defining-Eliminating-Conditioner/dp/B000G1MT2U/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?psc=1&keywords=mixed+chicks&pd_rd_i=B000G1MT2U&qid=1593967329&cv_ct_cx=mixed+chicks&dchild=1&pf_rd_p=fd5dad59-261a-423d-9e6c-7be719d7fb65&pd_rd_wg=9y0yW&pf_rd_r=DVBTGVP7CDMHBZWNAQAH&pd_rd_w=A6La3&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&pd_rd_r=85012292-17ec-45d1-a783-47e9d72a3009&sr=1-1-91e9aa57-911e-4628-99b3-09163b7d9294

I also find I need to use serum first. Silk Therapy by biosilk is also expensive but works for me.

I use Osis curl honey

BobFleming · 05/07/2020 18:02

You need Boucleme. I use the curl defining gel and a small amount of the super hold styler. You have to apply them to sopping wet hair.

Gives amazing results.

breadcakebiscuits · 05/07/2020 18:15

I hated curly girl. I just looked and felt so dowdy. I think you need to have big hair (ie lots of volume) and a big personality to carry off curly hair; my thin squiggles just made me feel self-conscious and untidy.

It’s very old-fashioned, but I’ve re-discovered John Frieda Frizz Ease and I love it. I use Aveda mousse to add some body to my wet hair, then a dab of Frizz Ease, then I let it dry naturally or break out the appliances.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Miraculous Recovery shampoo and conditioner followed by Charles Worthington Leave In Conditioner

VenusInfers · 05/07/2020 18:23

I swear by Boots own brand Curl Cream. A small nugget gently massaged into damp hair and air dried makes for great natural curls. If you use too much it can go crunchy, but get it right and nothing could be easier.

L0obyLou · 05/07/2020 18:34

I have similar hair and have also tried curly girl with awful results. I've been going curly recently and have been getting good curls with Umberto Gianni Curl Jelly (on special offer in Boots just now). You do need to scrunch out the crunch once your hair has dried but it has great hold and good curl definition. I also second Boots curl cream and use it on dry hair on the day that I don't wash my hair (wash every second day) and it refreshes the curls/waves.

Sirthanksalot · 05/07/2020 19:07

My hair is like this and I get better results adding gel spray with firm hold to sopping wet hair and really scrunching it in. Most curl creams really hold onto moisture which can be good but tends to drag down ringlets that aren't that committed in the first place. If you want definition you won't really get it without good hold and that means letting it go hard. Like others have said, you have to leave it to dry completely and then scrunch to loosen the hardness.

LadyPrigsbottom · 05/07/2020 19:07

I like Argan oil by Hask. It's only about £2.50 for a little bottle and it's great.

I also like Cantu curl creme and curl spray, but a little goes a long way, unless your hair is thick or very dry.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/07/2020 19:44

I have the same type of hair and use Boots Curl Creme too. I put it on, put the hairdryer on it for a bit to start off the drying (but not touching it), then wander off and do something for half an hour, then dry it upside down for a bit, then up the right way.

It's not great if you're in a rush and need to put it on and then dry it straight away, I don't think.

Wonderingwhyme · 05/07/2020 19:58

I used to use the boots one and I do have wow but again I don’t find it great? My hair is so annoying. I have a side parting and a long side fringe (great when it’s straight) but when I leave it to dry naturally the curl around my temple/forehead is unreal and looks awful! I have to either straighten it or clip it back! My hair has grown a lot (it was already half way down my back) during lockdown and the curls haven’t remotely dropped out which I thought they would with the weight of it.

I don’t put product into sopping wet hair.. I shower, put head on towel and do make up and then take towel off and product on. When those of you mention sopping wet, do you mean in the actual shower and don’t put a towel on head?

OP posts:
Sirthanksalot · 05/07/2020 20:27

Yes I apply product to very wet hair upside down after a shower and then I can only get away with the merest dip onto a towel after scrunching or it all goes pear shaped. Others style on damp hair like you so I guess different things work for different people. Unfortunately it's not a precise science (damn it)

OhioOhioOhio · 05/07/2020 20:31

John Frieda is old fashioned? Omg.

50shadesoflunacy · 05/07/2020 20:32

John Frieda Frizz Ease mousse. Brilliant stuff

Wonderingwhyme · 05/07/2020 20:41

Ok I’ll give soaking wet hair a go, I haven’t tried that to be fair. I used to use John freida on straight hair years ago but never on my natural curls so could try that again too thanks

I like husk oil too. I use that when I straighten mine. I have the shampoo and conditioner but don’t especially rate that.
