Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

Lovely to see the Old Ladies thread again. This winter I have embraced the shawl! Also reading cosyish mysteries - have discovered Elly Griffiths - not too gruesome or procedural. I've enjoyed hanging things on the line as the weather improves - such an improvement when you snuggle into crisp, sweet-smelling sheets!

GoldRhino · 08/04/2021 14:15

Hello fellow old ladies at heart. My idea of heaven is a mooch around the garden centre, an afternoon pottering in the garden and then a pot of chamomile tea and a slice of Victoria sponge!

I’ve given up on useless skincare these days and just use cetaphil and aveeno. I like to smother myself in aveeno and then chill on the sofa in one of my old lady nighties. I can’t deal with waistbands after 7pm....

Maireas · 08/04/2021 14:59

Sounds like bliss, @GoldRhino. I loathe shopping malls and have found some individual shops that suit my needs. Including a very small but well stocked ironmongers that sells everything from nails, paint, saucepans, scourers, linen tea towels and block soap! I've just done my nails - the grandma way - rubbing in petroleum jelly and buffing with a chamois buffer! They look shiny and neat. The thought of those acrylic nails makes me shudder...

GoldRhino · 08/04/2021 17:40

Ooh @maireas I adore a good iron monger! I can always find bits and bobs in there.

Just spent this afternoon in the garden digging up unwanted plants and then trying out our new garden lounger chairs. Was bliss!

Maireas · 08/04/2021 17:45

How lovely. This ironmongers is an absolute Aladdin's cave! String, potholders, pudding basins, wooden scrubbing brushes, you name it.

teawamutu · 08/04/2021 17:58

It must be fate - I've just had a pre-dinner sherry and thought of this thread, and it's been revived Smile

Posh Spanish sherry from a wine box, not Bristol Cream so not true OL. But lurvely.

AcornAutumn · 08/04/2021 18:01

@MitziK

I used the Cold Cream two nights ago just for a quick freshen up. Oh, my skin! Ever since, it's felt soft, smooth and refreshed which, as I was snowing (Psoriasis/very very dry skin) every time I touched my forehead beforehand, is lovely.

I don't see why people pay so much money for 'cleansing balms' when they could just stick with what has worked for years and years and years. My only gripe is that the tub is plastic and not the satisfyingly cold and heavy glass they used to be made from.

Sorry, which cold cream please?

Mum used to used Boots cold cream and I loved it but it doesn't exist. I want a cold cream that's actually cold.

Katiepoes · 08/04/2021 21:24

Oh I have missed this thread! My daughter is shaping up nicely to be a civilised old lady, at the age of ten she loves a cup of camomile tea from an ancient china mug my mum gave her, she rocks a big fluffy cardigan at home and best of all...sat happily watching the two Poirot films BBC2 showed last weekend Grin.

NineOClockOnASaturday · 08/04/2021 22:39

It must have been this thread’s influence that made me have a Harvey’s Bristol Cream earlier this evening.

TempleofZoom · 17/10/2021 19:12

Just resurrecting this thread as Ive gone into old lady mode.
Thermals and warm tights dusted off and nice candles and books ready .
Any fellow old lady wannabes around?

BabCNesbitt · 17/10/2021 21:13

Funnily enough, I’ve just been googling for non-black and grey thermals and found myself checking out a couple of things on Damart, of all places.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 17/10/2021 21:14

I have a whole old lady house and it suits me perfectly. It has been said before that I'm like a character out of an Enid Blyton story which is a great compliment to me!
I adore leafing through those free catalogues you get with the Sunday papers; old people goodies galore!

whatisthisinhere · 17/10/2021 21:20

Oh my gosh. I want a shawl to wrap around my shoulders when the house gets cold, when I wfh. I have lap blankets, but a shawl would be lovely

I love a shawl. Can you knit? They are quite easy and soothing to make.
Deathraystare · 19/10/2021 10:29

This thread is dangerous! I ordered some Ponds Cold Cream the other day from Amazon! I do like a cream cleanser when it gets towards colder weather.

Also in the Daily Fail the other day it was going on about Lily of the Valley perfume and mentioned the Yardley one and the Dior one too (both of which I have).

I love autumn for this very reason... older ladies are so wise!
TempleofZoom · 21/10/2021 17:43

So wise!
Im going to get some cold cream this weekend but dont want a strong scent.
Is the Ponds one scented?

Lynne1Cat · 21/10/2021 19:48

I AM old (62) and love:

Sloggi knickers - they keep their shape after washing, the elastic doesn't "go" either, and they're so comfortable.

slippers in the house.

jeans/trousers with elasticated waistbands.

I absolutely draw the line at People's Friend/Woman's Own/Reader's Digest
"Doreen" bras

Deathraystare · 22/10/2021 09:59

@Lynne1Cat

Oh I like Doreens! Ok not the most "Come Hither" bra but comfy. I get a lookie likie from M&S. I do have some fancier ones too!

Deathraystare · 22/10/2021 10:05

@TempleofZoom

Yes it does have a smell - a cold creamy smell! Not flowery but a 'clean' smell. I love it!!

Deathraystare · 22/10/2021 10:10

@BabCNesbitt

Nothing wrong with Damart! I bought a lovely dress from there years ago (when I didn't consider myself an old lady!)

Lynne1Cat · 22/10/2021 11:33

Deathraystare Glad you've found something that suits. I usually buy Fantasie bras.

I just picked up 2 pots in Boots.
Its a lovely comforting smell. "clean" as you say.
Perfect

TempleofZoom · 22/10/2021 15:52

I also got some 100% brushed cotton Landsend Pjs (£4.99)and a Toast nightshirt (£2.99!!!!!)in our local charity shop.
Very happy

KatieKoala · 22/10/2021 16:00

Oh I'm glad this thread is back! I was on the old one and have just returned to mumsmet after a break to find this has been resurrected.

I'm going to buy some sherry next time I'm shopping. I enjoy it over a Rosamund Pilcher novel or in front of Poirot.

It's my birthday coming up and I'm planning to buy myself some cosy flannel PJs, although I also love a long nightie, and some rose and violet creams.
