We're invited to dhs friends 50th birthday party. Dh said it's for his family and a few close friends. I will know a few people there, but more a acquaintances then friends.
I've no idea what to wear. I'm assuming dressy casual. I don't go out much, so I'm out of touch at the best of times.
Is this top ok if I accessories it with nice jewelry, black jeans and heels?
I'm a 16-18 and 42 if that helps. Other suggestions very welcome

That top with jewellery is lovely and perfect for the occasion.
The skinny jeans and heels are perfect too. They are not outdated!

Halo1234 · 30/06/2020 22:18

I love that top but think its over priced. I am sure u could get very similar a lot cheaper. Try Dorothy perkins or Wallis. I think it would look lovely with skinny jeans because it is lose fitting. Enjoy the party.

justponderingg · 30/06/2020 22:21

Skinny jeans and heels are absolutely not out of fashion!

That top would look lovely with skinny jeans and heels, and
Really dress it up with some big stand out jewellery

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/06/2020 22:28

Who cares whether jeans and a top are in or out anyway?!

Personally, I see wide legged linen trousers as mentioned by a PP, as much less 'in' or 'young' than skinny jeans, but if I wanted to wear them I would.

Agree that the top looks bit overpriced - I do think MV take the mick with their prices.

Davespecifico · 30/06/2020 22:28

I’m 5ft 3 with cankles. On a night out, I would look absolutely ridiculous in anything other than skinny jeans and heels so sticking with the look for now.
I like the mint velvet top.

PurplePansy05 · 30/06/2020 22:29

I like it, with good jewellery and a belt it will look good. However, maybe it's my phone in the darkness, but it looks black on my screen. Is it khaki? Also, overpriced for what it is. I'd have another look online.

PurplePansy05 · 30/06/2020 22:30

And yes to skinny jeans & heels with it!

Lockdownhairdontcare · 30/06/2020 22:32

I thought sandals like

I've tried that top on pre-lockdown, but in the oyster shade, and it's really lovely on. Yes, you could get something similar in H&M but the cut of the Mint Velvet one is great.

I would have bought it, but I'm not a big fan of my arms and I would have ended up covering the top up!

ComeBy · 30/06/2020 22:34

Good top.

QuentinQuarantino · 30/06/2020 22:35

"Wide leg linen trousers".

I'm 40 and there's more chance of me going out in the hotpants Kylie wore in the Spinning Around video than in wide leg linen trousers 😂.

Top is lovely OP. Would look great with skinnies and heels (chunky/block).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/06/2020 22:36

Quentin Grin

Lockdownhairdontcare · 30/06/2020 22:46

Penelope Chilvers has nice wooden block heels too.

Tatapie · 30/06/2020 22:52

Top is perfect,
Wear whatever jeans you feel comfortable and look good in.
Sandals preferably but don't overthink it! Be you and be confident.

pingusigloo · 30/06/2020 22:54

That top is very nice. I'm 35 and wear skinny jeans with heels Hmm straight cut jeans are awful unless you're very tall with long legs.

And wide linen trousers 😂

famousforwrongreason · 30/06/2020 23:00

I love that top. If you have to wear heels go chunky, nothing worse than slipping into mud whilst balancing a drink and food and trying to look stylish whilst being gregarious.
Another option is a simple long sleeved knee length plain shift dress not fitted with epic hair and make up and earrings with simple sandals.
Jeans need to be ankle grazers, soft enough that you can eat and relax and not feel cut in half.
If outside you can get funky as heck with trainers or flats and be super comfy.
Flatforms are great for added height without being too dressy.
again with the hair and make up

famousforwrongreason · 30/06/2020 23:03

And wide linen trousers 😂
Ugh. I remember thinking they were the ultimate in chic back in the day. Always slightly faded if black or navy,, terrible intimate creasing from one brief sit down and the baggies knees ever.
Beige, taupe or cream ones just resembled dishrags.
I definitely experimented But... I looked a fucking state for most of the 90s.

famousforwrongreason · 30/06/2020 23:13

Still chuckling about the wide leg linen trousers plus the suggested colour combo, red top with khaki linen trews?
Reminds me of the time Cheryl tweedy tried to break america in a purple / orange flares combo and major, MAJOR hair.
Reminded me of my postnatal depression back to work wardrobe and asking my ex husband to critique my hormonal clothing choices. Of course I ignored him and would spend the day at work feeling disgruntled and looking like I was spoiling for a fight should anyone mention my dress 'sense'.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/06/2020 23:15

Top really good

I would wear it with lots of jewellery, skinny jeans/straight jeans and trainers or flat sandals depending on the weather

temporarygate · 30/06/2020 23:16

I wear wide linen crops for work with a naice blouse - I’m in a role that requires nondescript clothing. Linen trousers are safe workwear and absolutely not fashionable Grin

I do like a good culotte, Cos do some gorgeous ones which I would wear out in the evenings. The MV blouse looks very chic, I very much doubt a H&M or Dorothy Perkins version would have the same effect

Mine are a linen silk blend do not crease and certainly not faded. You do have to pay for good quality though. They’re not £30 like jeans are.
CherrytreeView · 30/06/2020 23:32

I've just turned 30 and would say I'm fashionable, even according to my 14yo DSD - skinny jeans and heels are certainly not 'dated' in my circle. If I'm going for dinner or somewhere that calls for 'dressy casual' me and friends would always wear a top/blouse, skinny jeans and barely there heels!
That mint velvet shirt is lovely and would look great with black skinnies and heels - agree with others that it could definitely handle some chunky/statement jewellery to bring it together.

PlanDeRaccordement · 01/07/2020 00:18

Laugh all you want, but it’s out dated here
I’ll hang on to my Brunello Cucunelli palazzo trousers and silk top.
Boutique fashion is not really a mums net forte.

pingusigloo · 01/07/2020 03:50

Just because you spend £1000 on a pair of trousers doesn't make you fashionable. There are plenty of expensive clothes that look shite.

If you don't think mumsnet is up to boutique standards then perhaps go over to fancymumsinlinen.net
