We're invited to dhs friends 50th birthday party. Dh said it's for his family and a few close friends. I will know a few people there, but more a acquaintances then friends.
I've no idea what to wear. I'm assuming dressy casual. I don't go out much, so I'm out of touch at the best of times.
Is this top ok if I accessories it with nice jewelry, black jeans and heels?
I'm a 16-18 and 42 if that helps. Other suggestions very welcome

Skinny jeans & heels have been 'out of fashion' for like 15 years, but that doesn't mean you can't / shouldn't wear them.

Yes, if you're trying to look like you work in fashion* you should do a boyfriend jean with a heel, but if you want to look like a nice woman wearing a nice outfit, skinny jeans and heels are a perfectly sensible choice.

*I work in fashion.

I shop from Zara to Net a porter... linen trousers are still a no. What a snobby idiotic statement to make about boutique fashion.

Everyone has different opinions on clothes, the combination of red and Khaki isn’t for me. If it’s your bag go for it!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2020 19:21

Must admit I quite like khaki with red, but not as two big 'pieces' together. I love a khaki utility jacket with a red bandana, for example. Makes me feel all Land Girl.

Did you get top op?

1forAll74 · 02/07/2020 14:20

I think more colour is needed for a party, the blouse is too formal and dull.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2020 14:28

Too formal?! It's just a shirt!

I agree on the colour not being good for a summer birthday party. It’s black. Like OP is mourning this person is now old and halfway to the grave. Not very celebratory.
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2020 19:12

That is, frankly, one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. And the shirt is green, not black. It is perfectly possible to have a good time and celebrate whilst wearing dark colours.

QuentinQuarantino · 02/07/2020 19:21

I've found the PERFECT accessory!!

Skinny jeans and heels are timeless in my opinion.

It always with spend good money on your clothes but buy less items. If you buy quality and look after it, it will last for years. The top is nice and can be dressed up with jewellery. Don't feel like you have to over compensate and use lots of accessories it will just look tacky.

My best mate is a larger lady and always wears black, she is always the life and soy I'd if a party , you don't have to be dressed to stand out, you can have fun and be party like in any attire.

I would say if you don't go out often, make sure you dress for you. Dress in something you feel comfortable in that looks nice and you will have a better time, trying to dress all trendy in a style you are not comfortable with, will just make you all self concious.

Wear your clothes for you - gives you confidence, makes you feel good. The top is nice.

emma6776 · 02/07/2020 20:18

I love that top and have been eyeing it up for a while. I’d wear with skinny jeans and pointed flats or flat sandals.

Laughing at the linen trouser suggestion - I’ll have to let my Granny (92) know that she’s in fashion dahling.

famousforwrongreason · 02/07/2020 21:33

I think the top is beautiful. I'd be interested to hear what the jersey back is like in real life on a non model sized person.
Dark green is very flattering and luxurious and satin iis very much a party fabric.

Nellydean21 · 03/07/2020 07:55

Some good suggestions here OP and that top is nice, not too dark unless it's a wedding you're going to. You can have brighter accessories? Ultimately it's about you feeling nice, you don't have to be at the cutting edge to achieve that and you want to feel comfortable/confident so I would by all means experiment but prioritise that. Raised an eyebrow at skinnies comment too, they are fine. Cropped skinny might make it feel more current if that's what you're aiming for but don't let comments about fashion derail what you're going for, I think you'll look good. Have fun!

BusterGonad · 03/07/2020 08:35

Linen trousers, khaki and red, navy and green. Love it

evilharpy · 03/07/2020 09:04

I love the colour of the top although not keen on the collar/neckline. I'd wear it with boots rather than heels and probably grey jeans rather than black. Or even black jeans and nice trainers - I have a pair of pewter coloured leather trainers (also from Mint Velvet) that I'd wear with an outfit like this.

Totally disagree that dark colours are not for parties.

fizzpopbang123 · 03/07/2020 09:54

This thread is the perfect example of why Mumsnet S&B is not the place to ask for opinions. The demographic is too wide. "Skinny jeans and heels" can mean a myriad of looks depending on material, colour, budget, bodyshape, event, location, time of day...the list is endless. It's natural for every poster to immediately jump to their own frame of reference.

I was going to post some examples, but a quick pinterest search of "black skinny jeans and heels" proves the point.

TheFaerieQueene · 03/07/2020 10:04

I think the biggest change in skinny jeans and heels, is the height of the heel. 10 years ago it was the vertiginous stiletto, now it is a much lower heel/sling back that works the best. This ......

Gosh, lots of arguing here this morning!

OP I'm also 42 and a 16-18. The top is lovely but I think you can do better (this outfit would love horrendous on me, as it does nothing to hide my arms and thighs)

If you have a decent bum but want to hide a non-flat tummy, this top may be a worthwhile investment and would look ok with jeans. But if you are more hourglass and have a waist there are loads of dresses around at the moment that would be less than half the price (and some nice ones even at H&M)

It all depends on how fussy/stylish the crowd will be and your preference for dresses vs jeans :-)

evilharpy · 03/07/2020 10:42

How formal is the party likely to be?

fizzpopbang123 Good point - there is a very wide demographic here and it's not an echo chamber like for example the Styled by Susie group. I'm Irish but live in SW England. If I go to a party here, or for a night out in a bar (even a nice one), it tends to be pretty casual. If I go home and have a night out everyone is dressed to kill, heels etc.

pingusigloo · 03/07/2020 11:27

The woman in the picture is wearing skinny jeans...I'd go for very similar. The shoes she's wearing are nice.

Oh no they're skinny cargos. I'd go for jeans. Cargos are too casual.
