The 'old' lady style and beauty thread

thisenglishlife · 29/06/2020 21:05

With 'old lady' not being an offensive term, but rather referring to women with knowledge, refined taste and other positive qualities

Show off your pretty things and link to dresses, slips, twinsets, pearls, stockings, big knickers, cross your heart bras, prestige scents, retro style makeup, soap and everything else in between

Your response should have been you were aiming for classy rather than fashionable.
Mind you, I can never think of a quick response at the time! 😁

frugalkitty · 02/07/2020 17:31

Ooh Jace so pretty!!!

ComeBackIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/07/2020 17:37

LateDecember1963 (love that name, by the way) - I probably gave her a killer look, which is another thing I inherited from my grandmother.

latedecember1963 · 03/07/2020 09:20

😂 my children say I can deploy a good Paddington stare at times!

NannyOgg66 · 03/07/2020 16:13

@thisenglishlife I love Claire's clothes, not so keen on the 60s stuff tbh. I believe Catriona Balfe had a perm for first series to get Claire's curls from the book. Takes me back, I can almost smell the ammonia stench of home perm !

AnneKipanki · 03/07/2020 16:21

My mother brought me a nightdress back from her Spanish holiday ( last year ) . It was more Olive from On The Buses rather than victorian ghost.

RuffleCrow · 03/07/2020 16:25

Ah, this thread!

I've wanted climbing roses for ages now.

Does this thread remind any of you of your grandmothers? Mine always smelled of lavender water and elnet (for her curlers). Think she only owned patterened bone china - not a chipped mug in sight. Fox gloves in the back garden.

I might have to branch out a bit or I'll start missing her again.

NannyOgg66 · 03/07/2020 16:36

@RuffleCrow my grandmother was very un grandma ish I don't think she liked us gran kids much and swore a lot! (Catherine Tate's nan) She still had her hair in a sort of victory roll 1940s style at the front, that was her heyday(I'm in my 50s). My other grandma who was lovely died when I was very young so sadly I dont remember her.

NannyOgg66 · 03/07/2020 18:47

@Michelleoftheresistance I am a dedicated skirt wearer, I hate wearing trousers I can't find any that look nice or feel comfy. I've got a few tweed /tartan skirts, I usually wear them just below the knee with boots in winter, I'm bit taller than average 5ft 7.
I've got some proper granny style lace up shoes with a little shaped 2 inch heel to wear with said skirts but dont go anywhere smart enough to wear them! I have a very long, few inches above ankle Laura Ashley tartan skirt bias cut A line and I like wearing that indoors in winter with comfy mule slippers but it doesn't look so good with boots I think. My teen daughter thinks my tartan /tweed skirts are hideous Grin I don't care I think they are classic !

Michelleoftheresistance · 03/07/2020 19:18

NannyOgg you live up to your lovely name Grin Thank you. I am trying to leave the jeans behind and have a couple of beloved cord skirts but am feeling the need... the need for tweed.....

Will now go looking for longer tweed skirts, most I find are mini skirts.

thisenglishlife · 03/07/2020 19:35

I with you @NannyOgg66 I try not to wear trousers at all (dedicated dress wearer) and I don't even own a pair of jeans!

I’ve treated myself to some of the Chateau de Savon soaps, and ordered some guest soaps to go in my drawers.
After browsing their web site I’m now wanting a bath rack, somewhere to place the wine glass !!

SteelyPanther · 03/07/2020 20:06

Anyone remember Horlick’s tablets from Boots and quilted house coats ?

SteelyPanther · 03/07/2020 20:11

@Laiste

Fenjal! Has this been mentioned? The little body spray and the shower gel smell LOVELY!

3 of my daughters are early 20s and one of them scoffed at me buying a couple of fenjal body sprays in boots last year as we mooched around. Roll on to a couple of months ago and what did i spy peeking out of one of their handbags? Grin

I buy the shower gel - it’s lovely and creamy.
MotherofPearl · 03/07/2020 20:14

I may order some Chateau De Savon soaps but I don't think I'll risk the mystery box as it might contain some of the fruity soaps, which would be wasted on me as I'm not keen on them.

My usual soaps are either Le Petit Olivier, Nesti Dante or Dr Bronner's. I'm also hugely into Agua de Colonia Concentrada soap during the summer. It's Spanish and has a strong fresh smell of cologne.

thisenglishlife · 03/07/2020 20:44

Oh that sounds nice @MotherofPearl
Just Googled them and they've got some more products here:

Thanks @thisenglishlife, I am tempted by that travel set (not that I have any travel plans, just to try the other products).

NannyOgg66 · 03/07/2020 22:24

@thisenglishlife yes dresses in summer mostly and skirts and the odd dress in winter. A dress is just so easy you just bung it on and that's it!
@SteelyPanther , I remember quilted dressing gowns very well! Not Horlicks tablets though. I used to swear by Horlicks to help me sleep, discovered I have an intolerance to dairy though sadly.
@Michelleoftheresistance Per Una and Laura Ashley are good, not sure you would find much this time of year though. I buy a lot of mine on Ebay. If you're smaller than a size 16 you may find some proper vintage ones(most vintage clothing only went up to a 16 sadly).

queenofarles · 03/07/2020 22:33

Ok I’m joining!
Love me a bit of old ladies style Wink

I have a question about one of my GM and DM favourite perfume Bal a Versailles , was it popular in the U.K.?

I’ve never seen it sold anywhere , it was very popular in Europe in the 70s and 80s.

MotherofPearl · 03/07/2020 22:45

https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Jean-Desprez/Bal-Versailles-3972.html

@queenofarles looks like it's still available? Maybe you should treat yourself?

PickAChew · 03/07/2020 22:52

I used to wear rive gauche as a teen in the 80s!

PickAChew · 03/07/2020 22:53

And horlicks tablets got me through my o-levels!

thisenglishlife · 03/07/2020 23:28

@PickAChew

I used to wear rive gauche as a teen in the 80s!
It's great, not too well known these days and not promoted by the brand or its counters. The can keeps it fresh and portable. It's often half price or less too.

I've got Bal A Versailles and Rive Gauche.

ppeatfruit · 04/07/2020 09:12

Oooh I've never heard of Bal a Versailles (nice name) what does it smell like? I loved Vent Vert by Balmain that DM wore , you CAN get it now but it doesn't smell the same.

Rive Gauche!!! for goodness sake it takes me straight back!!! yes a well designed container! Good old Yves St. Laurent Grin
