Help me choose my black leather Autumn trainers

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 07:44

Summer, I have white Stan Smiths. I really like them. Need some Autumn ones.

  • must be black leather, so a bit of rain doesn't destroy them.
  • must work with dresses/skirts and opaques
  • must preferably elongate leg (very short)
  • on trend but not trying too hard (I am not young)

I could just plump for black leather equivalent (kid's size, small feet):

but the tongue is very high, and I don't think they are enormously flattering on short legs.

Also considering:
Nike Air Force 1 with white as well as black- really like these, and give me some much-needed height. But not sure if too sporty for dresses and skirts.

Nike Air Force 1 all black - not sure if would look like I'd borrowed my kid brother's trainers

Hobbs - nice. Probably safer than other choices. Possibly too flat. Possibly too big (I'm a half size).

Thanking you

What about Adidas sleek?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/06/2020 10:34

I buy a new pair of black Stan Smiths every year - I wear them with opaque tights, which I know Mumsnet hates, but also with wide legged cropped trousers. I also have black and white Veja Esplars, but don’t find them as comfortable for long periods.

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 10:36

Judystill...I am indeed very tempted by the black SS. May I ask, are you blessed with long legs? Do you mind the high tongues?!?
Why is my thread turning into a very different kind of forum:-)
Peachy - haven't seen these - will take a peek.

I also have tiny feet and it’s so good being able to get it as a children’s size! Saves a fortune.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/06/2020 11:13

I’m 5ft 6, size 10, don’t think I am especially leggy! I also get kids’ trainers (size four) and have never registered a long tongue. I have white SS too. The tongue on the Vejas is long and stiff (!) and took a bit of breaking in.

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 11:13

Indeed, peachy!
do you have a pic of the ones you were thinking of?

OP posts:
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/06/2020 11:14

Oh, I also have Continental 80s, a black pair and a grey pair. I wear the grey more than the black, but the leather on the black is really lovely and soft.

PinkiPhone · 29/06/2020 11:22

How about considering Veja?
I have both Veja V10 All black and a pair in all white. These work perfectly for me.

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 11:37

They're nice, Pinki. But they're almost twice the price.
Can you pinpoint what you prefer about them?
(I realise preferences are an instinctual thing, you may not be able to say)

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 11:43

Judystill...do you mean these? It says they're actually water repellent, too:

Really like those, peachy (the Sleek), but I think I prefer a black sole.
I'm crystallizing towards
Black SS
or Black Continental
or Black Veja, if I can find a cheap pair...

I was after an all-white look and wanted leather shoes. I didn't want too much of a sporty look, trying to go for a fashion trainer yet understated vibe. So I tried the V-10 in all-white. The tongue is possibly a bit longer than some other brands but that doesn't bother me. Their sustainability ethos is a plus too. It took maybe just 2 times to wear them in (no blisters). So when I wanted an all-black pair of trainers, it was a no brainer for me. The sole isn't too thin either.
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/06/2020 12:15

Yes, popular but mine aren’t quite that colourway. The grey have red and turquoise stripes, and the black have grey and white. Both my 80s are kids’ ones.

I do like the look of Vejas, but mine are definitely not waterproof, and I had to break them in like I would a pair of boots. I have difficult feet though! I think they look great with midi dresses and bare legs, and I also wear them with opaque tights and a short leather skirt. I find the sole on the Vejas is thin - mine are the Esplar - and I had to put an insole in once the weather got colder because otherwise the cold of the pavement seemed to travel up my legs. I live in Scotland and do really feel the cold.

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 13:12

Ah, all very useful, thank you both.
The Vejas are lovely. But definitely need waterproof and a thick sole so the cold can't get through.

Quite like these Continentals in minature size. Pure black

I don't know , they are all sooo black and shiny . I hate shiny black shoes they remind me of school shoes . I'd go leopard or one that are broken up a bit ( unhelpful )

Alsohuman · 29/06/2020 13:58

I’ve got two pairs of Adidas Sleek, you need to go up a half size.

www.schuh.co.uk/womens/adidas-sleek-w-black-trainers/1921897020/

I like a high top for autumn/winter. I’m on my fourth pair of these. You need to size down as they come up pretty big.

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 18:34

Look at your lovely vase!
I know, you have to go careful with the school breaktime look.
The ash I like, but wouldn't go with my standard uniform (skirts and dresses)

You’ll be surprised. I wear mine with skirts and dresses. They’re a bit dressier than most trainers and they’re so soft.
popularinthe80s · 30/06/2020 18:15

Maybe I need to broaden my horizons!
Thank you, everyone. Will have a think and a shop.

I ended up buying the black sleek for myself

popularinthe80s · 01/07/2020 08:58

The black sleek look lovely, but doing some research, they would be too narrow for my wide feet

I went completely off piste and ordered two we haven't discussed, to compare
www.adidas.co.uk/superstar-shoes/FU7713.html

And
www.size.co.uk/product/black-puma-cali-womens/114221/

If neither work, I'll go to tried and trusted black Stan Smith's, as the white fit me well. I'll grit my teeth and put up with the high tonguing :-)

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 01/07/2020 11:03

The Sleek are a bit narrow. I don’t have wide feet but I do have a high instep which is why I recommended buying a half size bigger than normal. Apparently most Adidas trainers have the same issue. If you like the Sleek, there’s no harm in at least trying them.

barberousbarbara · 01/07/2020 16:51

I have the Continentals that you linked and find them comfy. I'm short and find Reebok classics lengthen my legs more than the Continentals.
