Help me choose my black leather Autumn trainers

popularinthe80s · 29/06/2020 07:44

Summer, I have white Stan Smiths. I really like them. Need some Autumn ones.

  • must be black leather, so a bit of rain doesn't destroy them.
  • must work with dresses/skirts and opaques
  • must preferably elongate leg (very short)
  • on trend but not trying too hard (I am not young)

I could just plump for black leather equivalent (kid's size, small feet):

but the tongue is very high, and I don't think they are enormously flattering on short legs.

Also considering:
Nike Air Force 1 with white as well as black- really like these, and give me some much-needed height. But not sure if too sporty for dresses and skirts.

Nike Air Force 1 all black - not sure if would look like I'd borrowed my kid brother's trainers

Hobbs - nice. Probably safer than other choices. Possibly too flat. Possibly too big (I'm a half size).

Thanking you

My Adidas continental 80s have lasted really well. Load of different colours. I have them in navy and white

I have narrow feet so think they will suit me well. I’ve gone up a size because that’s what the Adidas site recommended. Also bought some white stan smiths.

Jacquiereid · 01/07/2020 22:50

I wear these black leather converse in autumn..useful transitional shoes when the weather turns..

I'm back:-) Thanks for these recs. I definitely need to do more research, as the Puma Cali and Adidas Superstars arrived, and they are AWFUL. I like Superstars in white, but in black they look colossal, and kind of plastic. They need to look reasonable with skirts and dresses, as I wear jeans and trousers approx once a year. I'll have a gander at these recs.

I like my New Balance as they make my feet look less big (I've got big issues over making my feet look smaller, they are quite narrow so fit well) not tried threir leather ones but I'm tempted to try for winter walks!

Take a look at these from Zaccy’s
Hand made in Spain, charitable donation to children’s cancer charities, super comfy with memory foam, leg lengthening tough platforms & waterproof

I've got black Stans but have hardly worn them. I like them with black opaques and a faux leather mini, but they don't really work with much else on me. Weird, because I wear my white ones loads.

Lilypink · 06/07/2020 13:13

Have you thought of something different to trainers? Last autumn I treated myself to black patent dr Martin shoes. They look fab with jeans, dresses, skirts long or short! Lots of compliments :-)

popularinthe80s · 07/07/2020 07:52

Frizzie, those are great, but way too cool for my look.
Remus, yes, I am slightly worried they will look like I've borrowed my brother's trainers.
Lily, sounds intriguing, can you please link?
Alternatively, can I wear these with skirts/dresses? I really like.

I have Superga in black www.superga.co.uk/item/2240/Superga/2750-EFGLU-Total-Black.html

ittooshallpass · 07/07/2020 09:34

Mint Velvet do great trainers for those who want something that looks good without trying too hard - also saves you wearing the same brands as your kids, which helps family relationships!

They aren't cheap but they have great sales. Have a look at these:

Sooverthemill · 07/07/2020 09:47

Have you looked at jigsaw? Their trainers are really comfortable, I have 2 pairs.

these are dark grey though
Russell and Bromley have lovely trainers, lots in the sale at the moment. Hobbs or LK bennett too. I agree the mint velvet are popular and said to be comfortable. For what you intend to wear them for I think going for a more shoe style than sporty style sounds right

museumum · 07/07/2020 12:48

I have superga in summer colours and they’re fine for small wide feet, although maybe half size up as they’re not big made.

popularinthe80s · 09/07/2020 14:50

Sorry for late pick up - but the search continues - and after 3 fails, yes, I'm going down the shoe route....

Be careful with Nike Air. I inherited a pair when my Ds outgrew a brand new pair within a fortnight. They were so uncomfortable when doing lots of walking, they were like badly proportioned wedges. I’m used to flats or a very small heel but these shortened my calves, I might as well have been wearing heels, ouch.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/07/2020 02:42

I absolutely love Ash virgins, its a shame they won't work for you.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/07/2020 02:45

I like these

Way out of my price range, Brillo
Thinking along the shoe route - what do we think about these, for skirts and dresses? A kind of brogue

If you’re talking Clarks I prefer Hamble Oak.

popularinthe80s · 11/07/2020 09:23

Very very much like those DMs, Lily P.
Alsohuman - already have 1 pair of Hambles, they are lovely.
Can you wear Hambles/Dms with short a line, pencil and pencil midi skirts?

OP posts:
LoveBeingAMum555 · 11/07/2020 15:41

I have just bought some trainers in the sale from Fitflop and I am really pleased with them. I have a foot problem so have to be careful with what I wear on my feet.

@popularinthe80s I have 4 pairs of hamble oak, I am quite slim and petite with size 6 feet so find I can wear them with pencil skirts or skinny jeans but I need something floaty on top to balance it out. They definitely work with an A Line skirt and fitted jumper. For me they are harder to wear with midi length skirts and dresses without looking frumpy, but that might be because of my shape. They are amazingly comfortable and so well made for the price.

I like the Griffin Mabel but worry they are a bit schoolgirl, I am 48, just not sure.

popularinthe80s · 12/07/2020 09:32

@LoveBeingAMum555, it sounds like our size and taste in clothes (and age) are similar. I don't have much 'floaty on top', though, because I'm petite and also stupidly short, so although floaty looks lovely for balance, on me it drowns me.
However I love my Hambles and I'm thinking about getting another pair instead of the black trainers.
