Cycling shorts and prison trousers, do you think they are stylish and do you wear them?

I'm clearly not very fashionable and up to date with trends, but are these things really in fashion at the moment and do you wear them to social events / drinks.

I'm in my twenties and my social media is full of women my own age wearing these as though they are high fashion.

For context the photos I'm seeing, they aren't wearing them casually but pairing them with full glam make up, hair done, nice tops. It very much is a trend.

i've seen this for a while on social media and celebs eg Haylie Bieber, UK reality show stars. i think its an off duty look but make up to still "look your best". When i see this style in real life and on Social Media, its usually very tight on one half and very loose on the other, eg massive jersey very cropped sweatshirt but very tight high waist leggings or cycle shorts.

I have seen things like cat eye sunglasses, LV or balenciaga trainers, massive white shirt and a chanel bag all as an outfit together!

It takes a bit of getting used, i like it but I won't be going for it personally.

What about you?

onwheels · 23/06/2020 09:53

i think its mainly a pop to the shops look.

BullshitVivienne · 23/06/2020 09:56

I think like any trend, it's aimed at the young and thin. If I wore prison joggers, I'd look like a slob.

Anxietyandmyself · 23/06/2020 09:57

I couldn't pull off the shorts with my fat knees Grin

I would wear the trousers if I'm having a lazy day as that's the vibe I get from them.

Ah celebrities.. that makes sense. I don't use Instagram and don't tend to buy magazines so I'm well behind in terms of current styles.

'Prison trousers' are what I would call trackie bottoms or sweatpants. In better fabrics they are loungewear, and if not cuffed at the ankle, cruisewear.

I don't wear them, because I prefer skinny leggings, though I do own one pair (bought to put on after finishing races) and they have crept into general use during lockdown.

Cycling length shorts I wear a lot.

Anxietyandmyself · 23/06/2020 10:00

@AuntieStella What do you wear with the shorts? Smile

Are they not just joggers? Never heard them called prison trousers before!

I'm in my 20s too and I love the cycle shorts trend...But it's not for me. Not going out out - casual daywear maybe, and I only wear joggers to go to the shops on a Sunday! If I was super tall and slim like all the models are then I would totally feel comfortable wearing it, alas I am 5'4" and perfectly average in size so it's a daylook for me! Cycle shorts are a revelation though - SO comfortable

Now I think about it though I'm not sure I've actually seen it in person outside of Instagram and paparazzi shots of models so

I have been known to wear trainers "out out" though so take everything I say with a pinch of salt!

Howlat · 23/06/2020 10:04

I thought prison trousers were trousers that were too big and always fell down.

Not trackie bottoms!

Howlat · 23/06/2020 10:05

Sorry, not that it matters, nor that it answers your question, or is even vaguely helpful!

Anxietyandmyself · 23/06/2020 10:09

They are just jog pants to be fair, the prison trousers term is something I often hear them referred to as Grin

Technical running Tshirts mainly!

But when not being put to active purpose, it would probably still be a Tshirt (longish, and narrow) or tunic. Not as modesty shorts with a proper length skirt IYSWIM, but as something which does not change body silhouette when it's a bumgrazer.

Tip: proper running shorts have a zip pocket big enough for a phone, keys etc, useful if you don't want to be encumbered carrying stuff no want minimal clothing on a hot day

If in cooler months, probably hoodie or big sweatshirt.

It's always a somewhat sporty look

Agree with the 'wide too or bottom, not both' as a useful rule of thumb.

onwheels · 23/06/2020 10:52

didn't Princess Diana coin this look back in the 90s too, i remember her (coming out the gym albeit) being papped with cycle shorts, sweatshirt and the Lady Dior or Gucci handbag?

Love this thread

ShowOfHands · 23/06/2020 10:56

Prison trousers? What a terrible name.

I wear tracksuit bottoms for some workouts in some weathers.

I don't wear cycling shorts often but do own bib shorts for long rides.

MassDebate · 23/06/2020 14:25

It’s a very Kardashian type look - all the celebs seem to wear cycling shorts with cropped tops or sports bras

doctorboo · 23/06/2020 15:29

I wore cycling shorts, cotton T-shirts, paired with a bum bag, back in the very early nineties. To be fair I’d have been between 8 and 10 and my mum chose my clothes for me Blush

No one wants to see me in Lycra shorts nowadays, gym leggings for plodding and huffing and puffing along the pavements while trying to tone up are just about tolerable.

monkeyonthetable · 23/06/2020 15:37

I just googled prison trousers and got a load of stripy fancy-dress [grin.] Clearly so on-trend not even Google has caught up!

Swiftier · 23/06/2020 15:37

I wear cycling shorts with a tight vest top and oversized white shirt.

NameChange84 · 23/06/2020 16:03

I’m seeing a lot of this look locally. It’s bloody awful. So unflattering. For some reason it’s pinstriped cycling shorts I keep seeing too and the people wearing them are quite overweight so the lines go all skeewiff.

There is honestly no amount of money anyone could pay me to dress that way.

grannycake · 23/06/2020 16:10

Yes back in the 80s cycling shorts had a moment. I wear them for cycling/running but nowhere else

MrsAvocet · 23/06/2020 16:12

I wear cycling shorts for cycling but they come off the minute I get home. Wouldn't cross my mind to wear them as every day wear. I presume these aren't real cycling shorts though? It would be really uncomfortable to walk around all day with a pad between your legs.Confused
I don't think lycra is terribly flattering on many people to be honest. It serves a purpose in sports gear but very few look great in it (and I am not one of the few!)

Atalune · 23/06/2020 16:13

I saw someone sporting this look in cycling shorts and a bra toP with a white shirt over and a full insta ready face of makeup. To my personal taste she looked pretty terrible. And the clothes looked cheap and uncomfortable.

But I am 44 so I know nothing.

QueenofLouisiana · 23/06/2020 16:35

Looks like stuff DS wears- track pants for land training, shorts look like swimming jammers (long training trunks).
If my 15 year old DS wears it, I think I’d better stay clear!

XingMing · 23/06/2020 16:57

I see 16 and 17 yo gig rowers wearing big pants and sports bras for training. They look wonderful, but it's not a look for anyone carrying any excess flesh.

Terralee · 23/06/2020 20:33

I remember wearing neon cycling shorts with a white T-shirt aged 12 in 1989 and my poor Dad saying in horror, 'those men over there are staring at you, they shouldn't be staring at you...'
That's the first time I felt ashamed & that I should cover up.
I never wore cycling shorts again!!

I definitely wouldn't wear them now!! Either cycling or out out. Keep that one for other people I think.

WingBingo · 23/06/2020 20:56

VSCO girls!

Look it up. Scrunchies, cycling shorts, over sized tees. It’s a specific look.

Usually limited to teens though. Step away from the cycling shorts!
